drmark,

Having gone back and read drj's post, I don't know if you two are really that far apart in my opinion.

Doesn't your denomination have doctrinal points of view concerning "plenary" issues like communion...eg trans vs sub-substantiation. And wouldn't those points of view be based upon what you believe is the 'inerrantly revealed will of God based upon scripture'? And, with that line of thinking, would a 'correct understanding' of issues like that, even be 'essential to salvation' in your denominations POV? Remind me again which denomination you're in...I don't have Alzheimer's but apparently a little bit of 'short timers' has suddenly hit me.

Yes, but they are not listed in the "Articles of Faith" as essential Christian doctrine.

Of course, God's Word must always be the foundation of doctrinal points of view, including plenary issues. (Not sure I've seen this phrase before - thanks for sharing it.)

No, these kinds of issues (communion, worship style, hermeneutical techniques) are not considered essential to our salvation by grace through faith.

The Church of the Nazarene is presently the world's largest Wesleyan/Holiness denomination.

I'm not wanting to sidetrack the thread, but isn't article XIII of your "Articles of Faith" concerning itself with communion?

Are you therefore saying, in your above quote, that there are things in the 'Articles of Faith' that aren't "essential Christain doctrine"...or am I just confusing what you're trying to say?

Sure, but there's not a single reference to communion relating to salvation or understanding the Sacrament as whatever substantiation.

I guess I am confusing what I'm trying to say. The Bible contains all doctrine necessary to our salvation. Plenary issues, whether they are discussed in the Articles of Faith or not, must not be considered essential salvific doctrine. That's all I'm saying.
