Get and external USB hard drive ASAP and back everything onto that once you get your system up and running. At least you will be able to get your computer back to that point. I always get a bare bones copy of my computer that I never touch. Then I will get periodic updates to my system. The bare bones is the most time consuming of the lot. The other programs are easy to install once I get to this point. Hope this helps...

I just got an e-mail from Seagate saying they had such a huge response to the sale that they ran out of product and cancelled my order.

That was a good price! Keep looking though there are lots of them out there.

You could go to tiger direct and buy a hard drive and external case too. Not sure if it would be cheaper. We have them at work.

Oh, no! Sorry about that. I suspect once news like that hits one of the deal sites a huge response is possible. I know there have been times I've contemplated a Macbook laptop or a Mac Mini, refurbished from the Apple Store, and by the time I see the listing on DealMac and get over to the online Apple Store, the model I want is already out of stock.

I'd suggest checking ecost.com daily. That's where I got the second hard drive for about $50, as well as a bluetooth headseat for $10 (name brand). The real test for me will be getting in the Sony Vio laptop from them. It was such an incredible price that I'm hoping it's in good condition.. Another thing they have really good prices on are Manufacturer refurbished-recertified digital cameras.

You could always go to newegg.com and check out the "open box" section. I've got a friend that will look there first anytime he wants to buy something computer related.

Yes, that's a good possibility too! I've purchased from them as well. Did I mention geeks.com earlier? They have specials every week too.

BTW, my Sony Vaio came in from eCost - quickly - and is working well, except that I hate Vista. But I will get the apps installed on it that I need and then I will interact with the operating system as little as possible.

I didn't know there was such a huge difference if you purchase on-line. Liz, can you give me some suggestions on where to shop?

The two biggest online computer store I know of Tiger Direct who just bought out CompUSA and the one customers are praising for their excellent customer service is New Egg.

I have bought from both of them, and would readily buy from them again. I rarely buy anything computer related at a retail store.

I rarely buy anything computer related anywhere.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000. It is about three years old. I keep getting blue screen that tell me to contact the system administrator, as if I have a system administrator. The last time this happened, it gave me a chance to send an error report, which I did. The error report was corrupted. The Windows site I was at told me that my hard disk is likely failing. I assume that's my hard drive.

I read in another thread that you can purchase a new system, with the hard drive. I don't even have a clue how to go about looking for that. I think my husband could probably install a new hard drive, but am not sure on that. I've heard it's "easy" and he's good at fixing most things, so I suppose he could do it.

So can anyone tell me specifically what I ought to be looking for and what to avoid?

Greetings,

How long after you boot up into windows does the blue screen appear ?

I had similar problems with my Dimension 1100 series,

*** Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vender for support
NMI: Parity Check/Memory Parity Error
*** The system has halted ***

the problem in this instance with was the intergraded graphics on the motherboard, so I disabled the onboard video and put a PCI video card in it (because there is no AGP slot); and have had no problems since.

While I haven't seen any deals as good as the one directly from Seagate in recent days, ecost.com has got a Seagate 320 gb in the $55 range right now.

And cynthia, I'm the designated tech geek for the family, so I do most of the purchasing along those lines. With a 19 yo that just went to college and a 15 yo in high school, and a hubby on the road as a trucker, they have a lot of tech needs (and wants, but needs come first). And I'm a web developer by profession, so I do too.

That's a good deal too.

I didn't know that. My husband has to use computers on his job, so he is the designated computer person in our family. I would like to learn more about them, but I just do not have time to add that to my list of things.

My computer has not given me any more blue screens. It seems to be fine now. I don't know what was wrong, but it's fixed now. We will be getting an external hard drive next week. Dh and I had to fly across the country due to a death in the family and have been gone almost two weeks. It'll be a week or so until we catch up and can get this new drive.

I still think it's a smart move to get one, and I suggest you just keep checking all the usual places for a good deal. I did see another one this week on ecost in the 250-350 gb/$55 range. Haven't seen anything as good as that Seagate deal, though.

My husband was just given a gift certificate for $100 to Circuit City. He was looking on-line there and found some external drives that he could use that for, so I think that is where we will get it from.

You are sure right about that. I was disappointed when they ran out of the one I ordered, but now I'm glad, since this will essentially be free.

The new hard drive should come with software to transfer the files or have a link to find it on the internet. We put in a new hard drive just over a week ago. The directions will have you switch your ribbon cable to trick the computer into thinking the new drive is the old drive, etc. You'll switch it back when all is finished.

Be sure to turn off any firewalls. We forgot and attempted to transfer the info several times. The OS didn't transfer until I remembered the firewall.

Hubby has changed out hard drives many times for us. We paid about $65.00 at Best Buy this time.

Everything I know, I learned at Virtual Doctor!

You could also use the file transfer wizard in XP, sort of like ghosting; install the old HD as the second drive after the OS is installed on the new HD.
Set the jumper setting to cable select and windows should pick up the second HD as a regular drive, and then just transfer the files over
