MrsTracy72 -> Night time cravings (8/14/2008 12:04:40 AM)

I have been so good with this up until a couple of months ago and now I stink. I have these cravings at night and they definately are not for healthy food. Does anybody else crave sugar and cakelike things at night? What do you crave? How do you avoid it? I was told that if you can hold off for just 15 minutes, you will be fine. But that doesn't work for me.

Make sure you're drinking adequate water and eat healthy foods. Your body is craving something, so it must be lacking--try to pinpoint specific nutrients the foods you're craving may contain.

Take a magnesium supplement (on a regular basis) if you crave chocolate. That's what your body is missing that it's trying to get.

Yeah, that's just what I'd reach for. Look past the M&M's, Kisses, and Mallo Cups and grab that magnesium pill. [;)] And then the coroner would zip up the bag cuz I'd have to be dead to do something like that.

Yeah, right ~ NOT!

What are you eating during the day? Often it's because of things we eat during the day that we crave at night.

Personally, if you're craving chocolate, get some raw chocolate or a high quality dark chocolate (70% stuff) and that should satisfy ~ and it's unlikely you'll be able to eat as much of it as you would M&M's or whatever.

MrsTracy72 -> RE: Night time cravings (8/15/2008 4:24:13 PM)

Ok, here is the funny thing. If I take my vitamins, I crave more food all of the time. No matter how good or bad I eat. But at night, once I start, I am done for. In a way, I can't wait for winter, because we are so busy at night and never home to eat that I don't have to worry so much.

agapetos -> RE: Night time cravings (8/15/2008 6:06:26 PM)

Well you didn't really answer the question I asked but going by your last post...

It sounds as though your problem is boredom. If you're busy at nights in winter and don't have the problem, and not busy in summer and do, it'd make sense.

MrsTracy72 -> RE: Night time cravings (8/15/2008 8:23:21 PM)

During the day I eat alot of different things. I make sure to get my fruits and veggies in. I always get my calcium in, and try to add protein but am not very good at that. It is like once I start with the sweets, I can't stop with them, but only at night. During the day, I really don't need them.

manda59 -> RE: Night time cravings (8/15/2008 8:27:23 PM)

How about not buying them then, and not having any in the house?

It could still be that you're bored and you need to find something to do with your time so you're not thinking about the sweets you have in the house.

Or that you've been following too strict a diet.

You don't mention carbs in your post, so it could be that you're cutting back too much on them. Choosing carbs carefully can help stabilise blood sugar levels and so reduce cravings.

You may be eating too early in the evening and need something else after your evening meal and before you go to bed.

You may want to allow yourself some high quality treats instead of going for whatever you go for. I can eat a standard bar of chocolate very quickly and want more right away but I'll only eat a couple of squares of dark, quality chocolate.

MrsTracy72 -> RE: Night time cravings (8/15/2008 9:05:32 PM)

I love dark chocolate, but never am sure where to find the good stuff. Since we are now in health and fitness, I think I will mention that eating 3oz of dark chocolate a day has some health benefit, but I forgot what. I think it is the antioxidents. Correct me if I am wrong. So between that and wine, we should be good to go on antioxidents.

I do love to make smoothies and if you have been to starbucks and gotten their mango orange banana smoothie, they are the best, but I am not paying 4 bucks a glass, so I figured out how to make them myself. I use soy protein instead of whey, but that is still alot of calories for a snack.

agapetos -> RE: Night time cravings (8/15/2008 9:23:03 PM)

Well I don't do bananas so it wouldn't be the best for me.

My smoothies are generally some fruit and yogurt. I always keep tinned pineapple (in natural juices) in the house, cos I love it and it works well with the yogurt. I do keep some other tinned fruit, but they're always natural juices. The yogurt is generally a bio yogurt that I make myself.

As for the dark chocolate ~ you need to look for at the price and the cocoa content. I'm not sure on what my favourite chocolate is, but it's at least 60% cocoa, probably higher. I'm not sure that I could eat 3oz of it every day though.

As for the wine ~ I wouldn't recommend that anyone drinks alcohol every day, though I have no problem with people having the odd glass now and again but they need to be careful if they're on any meds and to watch the calories in the glass they're knocking back. Lots of other things contain antioxidents.

Just a thought, but you may want to try brushing your teeth. Some folk find that having clean teeth stops them from eating anything.

manda59 -> RE: Night time cravings (8/15/2008 9:26:04 PM)

I also find that having a mug of soup at night (usually tomato) stops me craving sweet things.

I actually do that. LOL

You know I can see how that would work. I love tomato soup, but the I load it with crackers.

More than likely, it's dehydration. Everyone thinks they're hungry, but in most cases, they're simply not getting enough water.

sunshine4God -> RE: Night time cravings (8/15/2008 11:25:11 PM)

I always seem to crave cheezits or chips at night.

MyCatSmokey2006 -> RE: Night time cravings (8/16/2008 12:18:14 AM)

I crave sweets and high carb foods at night, especially sitting here posting late and reading about food.

I have a slice of lightly buttered wholemeal toast with it.

Crackers are ok, so long as they're not too salty. And still probably better than cake or other sweet things.

You know, I always get that feeling that I need to eat something, but I don't know what. And sometimes I can pinpoint it, but oftentimes I can't and I start eating everything in sight. But I do drink alot more at night than I do during the day. I even drink diet caffiene free soda so I have something sweet tasting and so that the bubbles in it make me feel full.

MyCatSmokey2006 -> RE: Night time cravings (8/16/2008 10:33:49 AM)

I like diet orange Sunkist soda because it gives me something sweet without all the calories and carbs.

Could be the artificial sweetners that are causing the problem.

Try some water, perhaps with some citrus slices in it if you don't like ordinary water.

monamie -> RE: Night time cravings (8/16/2008 11:37:33 AM)

Our doctor that teaches whole foods nutrition would rather people drink regular soda instead of diet if they feel like they just HAVE to drink it. The artificial sweeteners are actually more damaging to your health than the sugar. We'd rather nobody drink either one.

Craving something sweet? Fruit is best. One night I was seriously craving fruit cobbler. I had some apples, so I melted a small amount of (real) butter in a cast iron skillet--sauteed sliced apples sprinkled with cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves--tossed in some chopped pecans, then after it was hot drizzled with just a little bit of pure maple syrup (please don't even keep "pancake/waffle" syrup in the house). When it was done, I sprinkled it with a little bit of sprouted grain cereal and drizzled with a little bit of raw cream. Better than any cobbler I would have gotten at Cracker Barrel (or worse yet, the freezer section of the grocery store [:'(]). And every single ingredient was nutrient packed.

(And on the soy protein note....soy mimics estrogen and can really mess with your hormones....and actually cause weight gain. The whey protein--if you feel as though you need to add a protein--is better. I tend to avoid smoothies at places like that unless I can read the ingredients and know that they're only fruit and fruit juices.)

Wonder_Woman -> RE: Night time cravings (8/16/2008 7:58:07 PM)

This may sound a bit on the wild side, but I drink about a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in the evenings (followed with lots of water, lol). I started taking it as a natural remedy for mild arthritis pain, and discovered a nice side effect in that it lowered my desire for sweets.

monamie, that sounds really good. I love apples!

MrsTracy72 -> RE: Night time cravings (8/16/2008 10:00:25 PM)

That cobbler does sound good. Today we were at a picnic so we didn't eat dinner until 7:00. Now I just feel stuffed. But dinner was good. No desserts though.
