Definitely names, and pronunciations of my name that I would never allow anyone to say. It really depends on the person and the relationship that I have with that person.

ALL of them do... Slightly joking but not really. I've never been a fan of pet names...I get that they express the love and adoration you feel for your special someone but overall I find them unnecessary and completely ridiculous. My parents still use pet names for each other after 28 years of marriage and I find that cute. So hopefully I'm not considered too much of a cynic and one who is against romance. :-D

The name I use was not that given to me at birth. Mean people like to use my birth names, but those who love me don't. I have, however, learned to keep my birth names secret, because invariably, someone will want to be a jerk.

I grew up in a dysfunctional, abusive family. In adulthood, I legally changed my name. There really isn't a connection between these two facts, but it did provide me with a pretty sure-fire litmus test. I can tell who among my family members gives a darn about my feelings, and who doesn't, by what name they call me. And about mean people, there are times when I don't want to reveal my maiden name. It's the kind that easily generates jokes, since it sounds like a body part. If I believe someone is of the type to make an immediate body part joke, I won't tell them what my maiden name is.

Some pet names are just obnoxious by nature... I agree with whoever said Boo, I would hate that!!! Some that I don't mind, but am not really sure are "pet names" are Hun, Babe, Sugar, Hunny... I guess anything to the normal...

For me, it's not so much what the pet name is, it's who it's coming from. There are certain people in my life who can get away with calling me most anything and it doesn't bother me (or bother me much). What bothers me about pet names is when people who don't know me call me by them. IMO, you earn the right to use a pet name with someone. Pretty much sums up my thoughts. Some people just annoy me with them... I tend to notice most of the time these people just annoy me in general.

Hate the nickname 'Boo'. However - being a southerner, some pet names are second nature and I say them without thinking. This is a good thread - makes me think! Guess I'll hafta stop calling everyone sugarpie sweetstuff!

Personally, I have a weird last name that typically only French-speakers can pronounce correctly Is it French? Mine is.

My guy friends never, ever call me my actual name, they either call me chick, Tink, Hannah Montana,(not as much anymore, thankfully!) and their new one for me- giggles?!?! One of my friends insists on calling me by my middle name, he thinks it's pretty? So, as long as you are my friend, I just go along with it!

When it's coming from someone I love or like, I really like pet names. They make me feel special, set apart from others. I use pet names a lot too with my loved ones and friends. Also, since I am a Southerner and I live in the South, I'm pretty used to being called pet names by perfect strangers as well and it usually doesn't bother me. The only time this bothers me is when it is used just a little too much. The appointment-setter at my doctor's office usually rattles off about 3-4 pet names in one short phone conversation. One time, she ended our conversation by calling me "baby doll." That was a bit much, in my opinion!
