It sounds like your new principal is my old principal.

But will those classroom libraries still be intact when school starts? That would be one of my worries! Is he just restricting the bringing of books from home? Is he going to allow teachers some leeway when it comes to their own classrooms or students or is he just going to show up in a classroom and get on a teacher or child's case because they are reading a book form the classroom library?

I'm just afraid he's taking this whole "authority" thing to far. This would breed a lot of resentment in my children and resentment does not bode well for someone trying to convince a child to respect and obey authority.

Blessings,

Garsy

Garsy,
I just ran into dd's teacher at Publix, they will be allowed to read from the class library. I really love this teacher as I said before we went through a year with her. Also, last yr I was the box top coordinator and I offered to do it again this year. She had said during open house that she had to talk to the principal. He said that he was pleased that I was willing to stay involved and help in this way. So maybe, it will be fine.

You say your neighborhood school is no good, but you are willing to leave your child in an authoritarian environment where the administrator wants to be a dictator?

I homeschooled my children for 3 yrs when my children went into school I checked out the neighborhood school the principal was rude not to me but to my then 4th grader. We have state testing and she bent to my child's level and said "If you fail the test you fail. It doesn't matter where you were schooled." Her loss because my daughter scored so high (98% verbal and 96% mathematics) on her state tests that she was invited into the Duke TIP program.

Also, my younger daughter is not nearly as stong in her faith as my older two were at her age and I do not feel that she can handle the worldly environment. That being said I am not against public school my older two are in a charter school and are fine. I just do not think it is the right option for my younger daughter right now.

Is this a new administrator? Did you have any clue as to the attitude/environment of this administrator and this school?

This administrator started late last year. There were some changes and we even had to have a conference with him but everything ended on a positive note. DH made the decision that dd should remain for at least this school year.

I'd pull my kid so fast their head would spin, money or no money.

I trust 100% my husband's discernment on this issue. He feels that it will be fine, but will be staying close to the situation.

I wonder if there is any legal recourse as far as the tuition?

This is a bridge that we will cross if there is any further issues.

This was the shocking directive from our new principal. Only curriculum assigned/given books are allowed on the school grounds. So, if my child finishes an assignment she cannot quietly take out a book and read but must sit still and wait for the others to finish.

I find this odd. Most schools encourage kids to read whenever they have a free moment right?

I don't know if most schools encourage kids to read...but if they had done this to me in school I would have been climbing the walls (literally) because I cannot STAND (even as an adult) sitting around with nothing to do.

I would definitely question this requirement and see 1) why it was deemed necessary to make it and 2) is there a better way to accomplish the same goal without this requirement.

If the problem where some people bringing inappropriate material into school then make a list of what is/is not allowed. If some children were reading instead of listening, then confiscate the reading material until after class.
