zoebob -> IMac won't go online (8/11/2008 10:55:11 PM)

I've also been given another hand me down computer. This is an IMac. It went online at the giver's house 3 days ago. I brought it home and hooked it up and it won't go online. I plugged the cable directly from the Comcast box to the IMac, through a router with my computer in spot 1 and Imac in 2 and the other way around, and through the router by itself. It won't connect online. However, If I take it to my parent's house 4 miles away who have the same Comcast internet service it works: both directly through their router and through my router. However, when I bring it back home it doesn't work. I have tried every combination of hook ups and order of t urning on/rebooting I can think of. Any ideas?

You probably should check your router to see if DHCP server is limited to only one computer. Another thing to check is the network preference of the Imac. See if network is set for DHCP.

You're saying you take both your Mac and your router to your parents' house, plug your router into their broadband modem and plug your Mac into your router, and you can get to the Internet?

Yes. I think they may have a router in the middle there somewhere too. My dad plugged a cable into his hook up. I plugged it directly into my Imac and it worked. Then I plugged Dad's cable into my router and then into my imac and it worked there...but not here at home

I am watching your thread because I am curious as to what the problem is.

WOOHOO!!

I called comcast tech support. He had me unplug and replug both the cable modem and the router and it worked. I did this before but it didn't work.

I keep trying to login to comcast to check email online. It keeps locking up when I do that.

I have it working now. I haven't tried checking the other two kids' emails online but I have it set up for dd1. The email thing is set to get her email instead of the original owners and firefox is set to her desired homepage. I am so proud of myself
