Often times I hear this term, "get drunk in the Holy Spirit". Which, more or less, means to act as if you're drinking the Holy Spirit as if it were a beverage, and then get "drunk", as if the Holy Spirit renders you so much that you become that of a drunkard.

I assume this was taken from Ephesians 5:18, which says:
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

Nonetheless, the scripture is greatly taken out of context. It says, "be filled with the Spirit", however, it does not say "become drunk in the Holy Spirit.". Nowhere in the Bible does it imply that any form of drunkenness is "OK", or endorsed and approved of by God. I find this misunderstood piece of scripture to be offensive.

Drunkenness is a state of intoxication where you are hindered from complete coherent thought, being in a state of mental disjunction and not completely "all there". I have experienced instances where I have been filled with the Spirit, as scripture states, yet not once have I felt "drunk". The Holy Spirit does not hinder your mental capacity when it falls upon you, you do not become untamed and uncontrollable. The Spirit is of joy and peace, not of ferocity.

This video is a prime example of the "drunkenness" that's intoxicating Christians.

Don't know with the crazyness had its start but Toronto, Brownsville, and Lakeland are all interconnected.

I agree that Ephesians 5:18 is taken out of context to say that we are to be drunk in the Holy Spirit. That is a poor handling of scripture, IMO. It is a contrast, as supported in other scripture, of sobriety in the Holy Spirit as opposed to the intoxication of the flesh. And, as you indicated, the intoxication being sought after by those groups is also a desire of the flesh.

Been there, Done that; REPENTED!!!!

When we are "full" of the Spirit we will demonstrate
the "fruit" of the Spirit. No intoxication in that.

Check out some of the the threads in the 'Church' sub-forum.. we touch upon a lot of that in our discussions regarding Counterfeit Revival and other false teachers/false teachings, false prophets in our church circles.

I do not think that folks who support the "Drunk" in the Spirit use Eph 5 18 as their Biblical referrence for support.

Seems that they use the perception of the onlookers on the day of Pentecost after the Holy Ghost had fell on the Church and all were speaking in tongues.

(Act 2:4) And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

(Act 2:5) And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

(Act 2:6) Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

(Act 2:7) And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?

(Act 2:8) And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

(Act 2:9) Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,

(Act 2:10) Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,

(Act 2:11) Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

(Act 2:12) And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?

(Act 2:13) Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

And of course Peter explained what was really going on;

(Act 2:14) But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

(Act 2:15) For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

(Act 2:16) But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

When folks are filled with the Holy Spirit speaking in tongues and very excited about what is happening to them they seem to fall back on this Scripture as the basis for their experience. So they call it (rightly or wrongly) being drunk in the Spirit.

Now of course when we throw in the craziness of Toronto, etc. it kind of overrides and confuses any form of Biblical referrence that sincere Believers may search for to help them understand the exuberance they may experience when they sincerely and deeply worship God.

It is a shame that commercialization and corruption confuse and put a bad taste in peoples mouth about the honest and deep feelings that can and do come from the experience of deep and sincere repentance and worship of our God.

Completely agree. Drunkeness is a sin, so to actually claim the Holy Spirit would cause someone to act sinfully drunk is simply abhorrent. Christians are called to self-control, and God Himself makes it clear the kinds of people who will lack self-control:

2Ti 3:2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, 4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God;

When faced with the 'drunk in the spirit' crowd, it's a good idea to remind them that the ONLY mention of being 'drunk in the spirit' in the Bible is actually a condemnation and a punishment being poured out:

Isa 29:9 Be delayed and wait. Blind yourselves and be blind. They become drunk, but not with wine; They stagger, but not with strong drink. 10 For the Lord has poured over you a spirit of deep sleep, He has shut your eyes, the prophets; And He has covered your heads, the seers. 11 And the entire vision shall be to you like the words of a sealed book, which when they give it to the one who is literate, saying, "Please read this," he will say, " I cannot, for it is sealed."

Jer 51:37 And Babylon will become a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals, An object of horror and hissing, without inhabitants. 38 They will roar together like young lions, They will growl like lions' clubs. 39 When they become heated up, I shall serve them their banquet and make them drunk, that they may become jubilant and may sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake up," declares the Lord. 40 "And I shall bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams together with male goats."

They may not listen, but they can't say they weren't warned. It's interesting to note that the same crowds that manifest the 'drunk in the spirit' behavior often also manifest animal behavior such as growling, roaring, and walking on all fours.

I have seen Eph 5:18 twisted and abused many a time on this very forum for the purpose of supporting 'drunk in the spirit'.
