Leslie_JnJs_mom -> Anyone in Maine? (8/11/2008 11:00:51 AM)

I want to move to Maine. My Dh is not on board with me yet but I have a great reason for wanting to move. My mom and I are both praying about it because we want my DH to want to move not do it because he likes to make me happy.
Well anyway I read up on the homeschooling laws in Maine. Yikes!! I have nothing like that in Missouri. I wonder what the homeschooling atmosphere is like in Maine. Is the year end evaluation a big deal? Do they actually send people out to your house to look at the work? My mom met a couple in her church who homeschool. She was so excited to tell me about them. She was saying see if your DH lets you all move here you would know another family who HS's here.

Where in Maine? My in-laws live in Maine and have not complained about any home-school laws. However, IMO, New Hampshire is a MUCH better choice. That's where I am from. [:D] Compared to PA where I live now, NH is a breeze. My mom calls the district to tell them she's homeschooling, and then turns in their test results at the end of the year. Also, New Hampshire has NO sales tax, low income tax, and low property taxes.

Either around Bangor or Ellsworth. Thanks for the tip on NH, we will look into that state too. I am sure it will not be a bad driving distance from my mom. At least not as bad as it is now in Missouri.
If I read NH right all you have to do is turn in the homeschool form to a non public school principal and keep records? I have to keep records now in Missouri so I am used to that.

I'm not sure how far Bangor is from the border. I actually grew up just across the river from Southern Maine - about an hour from Portland. My mom has reported to both a public school and a non-public school, so I assume both are okay. Some school districts are great, and some are not. My parents currently live in Milton NH, which is across the river from Maine. That school district is great. My little brothers and my nephew all took several classes from the public school there. Mainly music, band, and chemistry. This conversation is making me sad. I wish I still lived there!
