My 7 yo ds' front tooth finally just fell out - but it looks like the tooth broke off but the root is still up there! It's weird. He did chip his two front teeth a while ago. We never did anything about it because we expected them both to fall out soon. This one finally did but it looks like it just broke off. Do you think this is a problem? Will his permanent tooth push that through and out?

Should I try to get him in to the dentist before school starts? Dh just changed insurance with a new job but we've not found a new dentist. I didn't like the old one. I hate going to the dentist - not for the usual reasons, it's just such a hassle. We've had a hard time finding a dentist we (I) like.

When a child loses their teeth they will not usually have any root. The root has deteriorated prior to the tooth coming out. That is why it probably looks like it "broke" off.

However, if you are concerned you should consult your dentist.

Maybe that's it. But it's really just a nub he brought to me and it looks like something is still up there. That could be the new tooth, I guess. I'll probably need to figure out our new insurance and call Monday. Maybe his old dentist will be on the new insurance; that might be best for now, even if we change later.

I think it'd be worth seeing a dentist, just to make sure that everything is ok. I know from experience that bits of teeth left behind can be incredibly painful (not talking infection or anything). Given that he chipped the teeth, it'd be worth checking to make sure everythings ok.

It's probably okay, but I certainly would have it checked out.
