Godsone -> career in music (8/9/2008 12:33:22 AM)

what do you guys think about Christian artist selling their music? Do you think it's a gift from God and it should not be commercialized or do you think that artist should make a living and use their gift to the best of their abilities?

ta_mosquito -> RE: career in music (8/9/2008 10:48:35 AM)

Moving from College - Career to Morality & Ethics.

Thanks!

I certainly see no problem with Christian artist selling their work product.

Thanks

I do not have a problem with it either, although I do know that some Christians do though.

No problem here.

How else are christian musicians supposed to make a living?

As I have most of my life while ministering; working sonething else to promote my ministry.

As I said I have not problem with them charging for thier music.

I get a lot of "Free" CD's mailed to me for pormo reasons, if I keep them I send the cover price to the artist even though they did not ask.

If I don't keep them; they go in the trash can, and I continue on with my life.

Making a living in any music field is about as common as winning the lottery. It takes a lot of perserverance and dedication to their goals.

Thanks

I have heard some Christians saying that any "gifting" such as a good voice or playing an instrument or even painting a picture shouldn't be profited from at all.

DreadPirateRandy -> RE: career in music (8/10/2008 6:13:16 PM)

If talents can't go toward earning a living for yourself, what is the value of having any talent? It would be worthless.

We weren't given certain abilities just to stow away behind a bush and use them when no one's looking.

I'd love to know how something like that could be justified.

eaglelady11 -> RE: career in music (8/10/2008 7:37:39 PM)

the bible commands us not to waste our talents. so if we have a talent for something, i think we should use it whether we profit from it or not.

If a person desires to go into the industry and earn a living doing this, I see nothing wrong with it. I't s like an accountant or a landscape artist making a living by doing that.

Its what I heard someone say once, and heard it reverberated to an extent at an old church that I went to back in the 80's. I really do not know any Biblical referrence for it at all.

car2ner -> RE: career in music (8/11/2008 8:56:12 AM)

Sounds like someone was trying to guilt someone else into joining the choir.

I don't quite understand your position...are you for or against professional christian musicians?

I think your last statement is quite an exaggeration. There are lots of people who make their living in the music industry. Much more than those who win the lottery.

There are a lot of people who make a living in the music industry. But there are millions more that are talented, but never quite make it.

Of course there are. But unless I misunderstood RC's statement, he said that having a career in music is as likely as winning the lottery. I think it's a little more common than that.

Huh. I guess I would say... what's so special about a good voice or playing an instrument or having artistic talent?

We all have gifts. I don't see having a good voice as being any different than, say, having a good brain for business. Does that mean businessmen shouldn't profit either?

Hmmm... I think this may be a very small, but pivotal clue, into why there are so many bad pastors who can't teach their way out of a paper bag, hired by so many churches out there. Wages are only for those that aren't gifted.[:D]

No. Gifts are rare. Jobs are plentiful. Jobs are plentiful because so many people want to open their own church without the accountability, but that's another topic for another thread.
But gifts are rare. As long as there are more jobs than people with those gifts...

Hayseed -> RE: career in music (8/12/2008 3:35:26 PM)

In my experience, the ones who plant churches are usually the gifted ones and they tend to create a network of accountability.

The mainline denominations however seem to be the places where there are plenty of jobs and career paths.

Back to the OP: You can make a career out of music if you want, but it probably won't look like what people think a career looks like. I used to have a career in music.

I had a main band that I played with regularly.
I did studio and sit in gigs when called.
I built and repaired guitars.
I gave lessons.

No one of those things would pay all the bills, but I did rather well with all of them combined and I was doing things I enjoyed and "called to".

You have to cobble a living together. I can be done if you want.

FurGodWurLivin -> RE: career in music (8/14/2008 1:45:45 AM)

Generally, when someone throws a fit about someone selling their music (or their doctrinal books, or other pieces of art) is generally revolves around the verses in the Bible that refer to using the Gospel for mere profit. In reality, I find that most of those people just don't want to have to pay for their music.

tafkam -> RE: career in music (8/14/2008 1:55:52 PM)

I had a "lady" at one of my concerts actually try to talk me down in price on one of my CDs, telling me that she knew exactly how much the jewel case cost me, the paper for the inserts, the manufacturing cost of each individual disc, etc....and then stormed off in a huff because I wouldn't sell her a CD for $3....

Could you picture someone trying this approach at Wal-Mart? Only among Christians will you ever see such a level of nonsense....

FurGodWurLivin -> RE: career in music (8/16/2008 4:22:35 AM)

Pretty much... I have had Christians refuse to do with other Christians because they wouldn't get a special discount even though they were "brothers in the faith." Its pretty sad that we think because we share a religion we should get preferrential treatment. True humility and meekness would be offering to pay extra because we share a faith. It's radical, but it would seem to be more ethical... to this individual anyway.

But it wasn't a pastor who said this as much as a prominent person in the church instead. Thinking about it more, I suppose someone could say that one shouldn't profit from a gifting because of the Bible saying working with your hands. Singing wouldn't technically be that at all, just thinking anyway.

Now I would be interested in such a thread, even if quite controversal.
