EStan -> "The gods Aren't Angry" - Rob Bell (8/8/2008 10:21:58 AM)

Anybody read this? I saw a couple of clips on youtube from his "one man show" ($16 a person for a ticket?) What's the story here?

"The Gods aren't Angry", but then again, since as I think was Paul said that all other gods but God are actually demons, why should they be angry?

Now, if this is some kind of a "God isn't really angry with people" type of thing, I'd be interested in seeing how Bell spins out of passages like this.

quote:

Romans 1
18.The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness,
19.since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
20.For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

Actually saw the video this past weekend, which was a good idea to do before I make comments about it instead of making assumptions. Just sayin'...[8|]

The Gods Aren't Angry - It was a good video. Bottom line was about legalism in a Christian's life more than anything.

I dunno about the $16 or whatever...that must've been the cost for the live version if you attended.

We're currently using his Nooma series in a small group I belong to. We've got a couple of seminarians in the group, which is a bunch of conservative CRC folk. Based on his Nooma stuff, I'd be interested in "The God's Aren't Angry". Everything we've seen so far has been very well done and soundly presented.

We watch a Nooma video each week and discuss it for a little bit. I think they're awesome.

I agree. They're not exactly graduate level bible study (they're not intended to be), but they're very well done and do explore the issues with some care and insight. Like him or not, you have to admit he presents very well and has some snap.

They certainly are good for getting to the genuineness and authenticity of walking out the Gospel in our lives.

There isn't much Christian-eze used and not a lot of church talk, which is why I love them. A mix of believer/non-believer/unchurched can watch these and have real life discussions.

That's a good thing. It does, however, seem to give rise to a lot of misunderstanding. There seems to be a segment of the population that's having a hard time getting their head around the way he talks. To some, it puts them off just a bit. I do think it can be disconcerting sometimes. We've isolated ourselves a bit too much over the years and now have our own little language. It's convenient - we can use it for shorthand to express commonly understood ideas/concepts - but in the long run it's not healthy.
