My experience: It takes about 6 weeks to change habit patterns, and the first two are the hardest. Some ideas: 1. Find lower calorie foods you like, and eat them. I really like cooked broccoli & cooked carrots, so I eat a lot of them. 2. Figure out how to make lowere calorie food you like. I really like baked goods. My breakfast is bread I make myself that's roughly 1/2 whole wheat, 1/4 oatmeal, and 1/4 wheat bran. Add raisins, and sweeten with sucralose ("spenda" brand name). Takes about 1/2 hour to make up a week's worth (which is less than 5 minutes per day breakfast). The hard, painful, inescable fact of the matter is, if you want to lose weight, you will have to make some changes. It can be done with little changes, but if you always do what you've always done, you'll always be what you've always been.

ORIGINAL: solomonsprayer This has been a struggle with me and I wonder how others may work in healthy foods (like whole grains and vegetables, etc....fruits I'm ok with) into their diets while battling cravings against other not-so-healthy food items? Does anyone else seem to think that most healthy foods taste bad (and are frustrated by it)? As others have said, preparation is important. But what's also important too is just finding things that are healthy that naturally taste good. I hate celery, even when it's smothered in peanut butter (which sort of defeats the purpose anyways). I don't mind carrots, but I can't eat a lot of them. However, I can sit there with a bowl of raw snow peas or green beans and go to town. I don't care all that much for whole wheat bread, but Arnold's Oat Nut is amazing. Lettuce is annoying and just gets in the way of all the good stuff in a salad - that's why I load up my salads with tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions. There are other ways to dress up a salad, too - halved grapes, sliced almonds, walnuts, dried cranberries, sliced apples, mandarin oranges... One way to get ideas for salads and other vegetable side-dishes is to go to restaurants and see what they're using. Nicer restaurants are good for seeing the potential in sides like asparagus, squash, and green beans. If everybody made brussel sprouts the way they're done at one place here in town, the world would be a different place. Low-budget ethnic restaurants are good for finding unique combinations of every-day items (like eggplant in Thai food ) For salads, even fast food places these days are using a wide variety of ingredients that you can try out at home. -Dan.

I generally like healthy foods. I like all fruits and vegetables, dry beans, brown rice, etc. I had read that blackstrap molasses is very good for you, so I thought I would try it. I got some Grandma's Unsulphered Molasses at the grocery store and I used it in cookies and on toast and it tasted pretty good, but I'm not sure it was what you would call 'blackstrap' molasses. When that was gone I got some Wholesome Sweeteners Unsulphered Organic Molasses and it didn't taste so good. It almost tasted like it had been scorched when it was made. Is real blackstrap molasses supposed to taste like that? Okay, I just had a thought , and I'm going to go compare the nutrition labels for both brands of molasses. For one tablespoon serving of each, here are the results: Good tasting molasses: Potassium 150mg (4%DV), Calcium 4%DV, Iron 4%DV, Magnesium, 2%DV Not so good tasting molasses: Potassium 730mg (20%DV), Calcium 115mg (10%DV), Iron 15%DV, Magnesium 8%DV, VitaminB6 10%DV Maybe it's all the healthy stuff in the dark molasses that makes it not taste as good, but it is worth eating to get all the good nutrients.

It's the high mineral content that gives backstrap it's unique flavor.

ORIGINAL: DreadPirateRandy It's all psychological. That it is, you handsome thing. I've realized since eating clean for a few weeks now that the taste is all mental. If it's labeled "healthy", most likely you'll think, "That's probably going to taste bad.". Subsequently, it does. Once you get over the psychological aspect of it, then healthy foods aren't that bad.

Well, all I have to say is that my exchange student fed me Black Fungus yesterday and while I was terrified to eat it because I watched it "cook" or grow as it did and jump out of the bowl, it was awesome. And the nutrients in it were unbelievable.

May we got the wrong idea from our childhood. Remember our moms would say, Eat it, it is good for you. I can remember when I was young bride that I ate my first whole-wheat bread, now I prefer it over that white tasteless bread. Psychological is a excellent answer. My mother was given a delicious plate of breaded frog legs and was asked to sample them although she was not told at first what she was really eating. When my mother was asked what she thought the food tasted like, she was not sure if it tasted like fish or chicken. She was quite surprised to learn that she was eating frog legs and had enjoyed them.

I came up with a few simple ideas for my own health food. These meals taste pretty good. I use salsa's to flavor some of them. ===================== Egg Beaters and Salsa Store brand of Egg Beaters (Kroger brand) is usually cheaper than the name brand. I buy the 3-cheese version. Add Extra Virgin Olive oil to a non-stick pan on about medium heat, mixing the egg beaters to scramble. When cooked, I pour them on a big plate and add my favor salsa over the top and maybe some fat free sour cream. This only takes about 5+ minutes to make. My favorite salsa brands are Herdez and La Castena. Our Bakers grocery store stocks them, much cheaper than online. http://www.mexgrocer.com/catagories-salsas.html ===================== Brown Rice, Kidney Beans, Fat Free Plain Yogurt and Salsa I found that I can cook a huge batch of rice in the microwave that comes out like it was made in a rice cooker. My microwave is 730w and I combine 4 cups water with 2 cups rice and a packet of taco seasoning. I have some cheap plastic bowls that can stand the heat. I microwave the rice lightly covered so that it can let out some steam for about 55 minutes on 50% power. Mixing the rice half way through cooking and again when it is done I fluff it. I then scoop out some of the rice onto a plate. I drain the water off of some Kidney beans that I buy in bulk cans. I then pour the Kidney beans over the rice and microwave it for about 10 minutes covered with a plate. I then pour cold plain fat free yogurt over the top and add my favorite salsa around the outer edge of the plate. The heat from the beans should be enough to slightly warm the yogurt so "no need" to microwave it again. Tip: Stir Fry is a creative and delicious way to make healthy meals, I recommend using Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Tip: Wal-mart sells fruit in a can "without Fructose", read the labels and make sure there is no Fructose. You can usually get a nice can of pears, peaches, etc. that are packed in water and their own natural juice for under $1.00

ORIGINAL: solomonsprayer I know I know. Not all healthy foods taste bad. ...and "bad" is also a subjective term. The title for my thread was meant to be more of a general statement/complaint and discussion starter So having said that, I doubt that I am alone in this area when I say that I have a difficult time eating a healthy well-rounded diet, because so many of the foods in the healthy vegetable category do not appeal to me, while items from the high fat and sugary foods are always on my cravings list. For example, when faced with eating a stick of carrot during a late night snack craving versus a scoop of ice cream (actually more like a bowl) or perhaps some sugary cookies, I always choose the latter "better" tasting foods. This has been a struggle with me and I wonder how others may work in healthy foods (like whole grains and vegetables, etc....fruits I'm ok with) into their diets while battling cravings against other not-so-healthy food items? Does anyone else seem to think that most healthy foods taste bad (and are frustrated by it)? solomonsprayer This seems to be the problem with American society in general. As I read one poster on here, maybe you should just not eat whatever you are craving. And don't buy it at the store. Before I was married to Peter, my parents would buy only T.V. dinners for dinner. Talk about unhealthy But once I moved in with Peter, things changed. Now I only eat healthy food. I don't really crave unhealthy stuff anymore, besides the occaisional pop. But barely. I love eating fruits and veggies and I always look at the ingredients at the store and I'm starting to go more organic. It's really expensive, but there are certain foods you really should get organic, such as meat/poultry and dairy. I also get raw honey and unrefined salt. Not to brag, but I don't thing I can ever go back to my old diet. it would be too icky. You'll get the taste for healthy food once you force yourself, and in a pattern and you'll never go back to junk food. Your sister in Christ Jesus, Jessica

One of the things to consider when it comes to the expense of health foods is that they may be the same price or cheaper in the long run. I know that I tend not to be as hungry while on a healthy diet, so I don't eat as much or as often.

I tend to eat high fiber kinds of foods because they stick to the ribs and curb hunger. I also deal with IBS which rules out sugar and bleached flour of any kind. Fiber keeps it under control. I have discovered Fiber has interesting properties, among which is keeping me very slim. You might want to try whole grain pastas, pancakes and high fiber low calorie breads. They all give a sense of fullness.

Do you know if protein acts the same way? I know sugars, from what people say, make me feel hungry and unfilled. I have to work on it, because I do not like foods with fiber....protein yes, but not fiber usually. Seeing a plate of veggies makes me want to run away faster than a speeding bullet.

I don't live by the life is too short method. Gods given us this body so we should take care of it the best we can and eating healthy is a massive part of that. I reckon your tongue starts to develop a taste for more healthy foods the better the lifestyle your living and the more you get used to a healthy taste on your tongue.

ORIGINAL: solomonsprayer Update: I'm on week two of a "healthy" foods diet change and it is unbearable. You need to find healthy foods you like and healthy versions of the foods you crave. If you want a hamburger and fries- make them at home and use healthier ingredients. Healthy food doesn't have to be boring or tasteless. You don't have to eat steamed veggies if you don't like them. I do a lot of one dish meals. Lots of veggies & chicken, but often things like stir fry or curry. I eat pizza a lot- but I make it myself. I use lots of spices and flavorings and make food that I like the taste of. It is also a good idea to allow some kind of treat once in a while (I have something daily). If you dread your meals and feel deprived, you are setting yourself up for failure. Sure, we should eat to live, not live to eat, but that doesn't mean we have to make ourselves miserable- we should enjoy eating. God made food flavorful for a reason- and He WANTS us to enjoy it! Also check out some ethnic grocery stores, there is some great healthy stuff in those places. Spices, seasonings, etc. can make a world of difference. I find most American food to be a bit bland compared to Indian, Mexican, etc. Now if this does not look good, I don't know what does, heh. So, start making the 'better tasting' foods healthy. Check out some cookery books from the library. There are loads around.
