Researcher employed by US Government committed suicide prior to expected indictment on five murders in 2001 Anthrax Attacks.

SmokingGun reports on his recent psychiatric history:

Ivins, an anthrax researcher, worked for 36 years at the U.S. Army's Fort Detrick facility, according to an obituary. Fort Detrick has been has been a focus of federal investigators probing the 2001 attacks, which killed five people, since scientists there, including Ivins, have done extensive research on inhaled anthrax spores. According to the Los Angeles Times, federal prosecutors were about to file criminal charges against Ivins, and that the researcher had "been informed of his impending prosecution."

My husband says this was "a little too easy". Guy commits suicide and suddenly everybody's coming out of the woodwork saying how he was homicidal since grad school, etc etc. The only person not saying this is a friend of his, who, when interviewed, comment on how the guy volunteered for the Red Cross, in his community, and at his church... Yeah, occassionally the serial killers are "he was such a nice guy etc", but still...

They seriously let a guy with homicidal tendencies work in one of our national laboratories specializing in germ warfare and deadly diseases?

Seriously?

The therapist knew about this, knew where he worked, eventually got so worried he filed a restraining order, and didn't think it might be, I dunno, IMPORTANT to bring this to someone's attention? (Before you say "doctor patient priviledge", you sign that away when you get clearances pretty much.)

You wouldn't believe the clearances and background checks with everyone you ever knew that people need just to work with some navigation stuff for instance (which is a rather low-level thing), and they let a guy working with WEAPONIZED ANTHRAX who had a long history of homicidal tendencies?

Death can happen in many ways, but to drive over to it, suit up, and work with it for thirty-six years! I'd think someone that had no mental health challenges would exhibit some after this long a career in a setting this intensive. What was the thought- he was not a good choice going in to the job, and he knew how to die with his secrets, so the government has shot itself in the foot?

Well, from what I understand, this specific scientist was involved in developing vaccines to Anthrax. At least he has a patent on an Anthrax vaccine (along with several other researchers).

Maybe it was just economical; he was trying to drum up business.

Thanks

Hehehe.

Actually, work at government labs has a maximum profit you're allowed to make on patents. I think it's something like $150k a year max, and since there were I believe 4 other scientists on the patent, he would have made what, $30k a year max off the patent if they agreed that the patenters deserved all $150k/year?

It's a decent amount of money, but seems rather minor compared to killing a large number of people.

I don't know about everyone here, but it seems Bruce Ivins' suicide may eventually become another piece of conspiracy theory lore![sm=crazy.gif][sm=eek.gif]

The government better have had solid proof against this guy, after all look what they did to Richard jewell for the Olympic bombing.
