Ohhhh Garcy, do you have a recipe that you can post? I hate hard gingersnaps eventhough that is the point. I love nice soft cookies. At Easter, we make Italian cookies and they are the best. But you have to like Anise. It has a taste similar to black licorice. If you are starbucks fans and you get the vanilla or white chocolate scones, they have anise in them. They are little triangle scones and they are dipped in a white glaze. But if you would share the recipe, I would appreciate it, but if you can't, I understand. Family recipes. I get it.

I saw X off on the aeroplane this morning, on the way to her school excursion in Canberra. I cried in dh's arms last night but I managed to hold it together for her this morning and see her off with a hug, lots of love and a smile.

J came home happy about the bike he's making in his mechanic's group. Apparently he gets to bring it home next week.

That presents a bit of a quandary though. Dh is out of town next week and there won't be any means for J to get it home. I'll have to put some thought into what to do about that.

Kylie, don't you love it when you have to do that? I don't know how many times I have put my kids someplace and then have to figure out what happens after? I do that all the time.

Nope...sorry...that is another battle I am not having to wage this year since it is so dry. I do hope that they leave you alone soon...I hate dealing with ants!!

Kylie...hope that you find a good solution for getting your ds's bike home and that your dd has a fun trip!

Speaking of spiders...my adult daughter just ran into a huge spider in the shower. He was not happy to be trapped and sent outside (very aggressive spider).

This is my Grandma's recipe and I will use NO other. Nice chewy gingersnaps. I do always add just a touch more ginger and a tad more cinnamon then Grandma did tho.

This one didn't have cinnamon either,it calls for allspice, and it was too much. The recipe came from Mrs Fields, some cookie lady. I think I'll try ot find a different one.

Nope. You don't have to take care of the neighborhood.

{{{Kylie}}} How long will X be gone? And you had talked earlier about J's older friend. Have you given it more thought, does it still concern you?

Spiders outside? Fine. Spiders inside? Dead. No trapping for me!

Oh no worries! My grandma shared this recipe with folks all the time! It's likely that there are folks out there passing it off as their own . I remember making these with her all the time! I even won a fair baking contest with these in the 10 to 15 year old age group!

Gingersnap cookies

3/4 cup Crisco
1 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup molasses
2 eggs
1 tsp cinnamon (just a bit more is even better)
1 tsp ginger (just a touch more is good)
scant 1 tsp salt (just shy of 1tsp salt)
1/2 tsp cloves
4 tsp baking soda
4 1/2 cups flour

Cream Crisco and sugar, beat in eggs. Blend in molasses.
Sift together dry ingredients; add to first mixture.
Roll into balls, dip in granulated sugar and flatten slightly on ungreased cookie sheets
Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes.

You can also chill this dough and roll it out and use it for cut-out cookies.

We had a little storm blow through this morning. Gave us some much needed rain! We are supposed to get another round of storms this afternoon but I think they are going to miss us for the most part.

Blessings,

Garsy

J's older friend - I guess my biggest concern is that I have never met the young man in question. I would love to have the opportunity, but his parents would probably be a bit weirded out by a kid as young as J inviting him over, so I really don't know what to do right now.

Tracy, Enjoy! They are superbly delicious cookies as far as I'm concerned!

What's the age difference Kylie? I'm certain you stated it already but I've forgotten.

I still say if the boys get along and both are respectful of the other child's parents I don't see a problem. I guess I would see about inviting the older friend over and going from there. Not knowing the other parents - you can't be sure if they would be "weirded out" or not.

School starts in two weeks.

I still haven't heard anything about the aide's position. I did talk to the school secretary yesterday and she said to her knowledge they hadn't hired anyone or even done any interviews yet! That's a good sign because if you want to KNOW something you talk to the school secretary. I had to leave a message for a second grade teacher tho. I have a question about the supply list.

My sister STILL hasn't had her baby. She was due yesterday. She is MISERABLE!

Blessings,

Garsy

Kylie, I'd give the parents a call and invite them and the friend to a short visit. That would give everyone a chance to meet and ask questions. We've done that with a friend of S's. It was a little awkward at first, but they were glad to meet, too.

Garsy, hope your sister delivers soon. I hope you get called for an interview soon.

We were gone last week, so I'm still catching up on the news. I'm praying as I'm reading, though.

We still have a few clothing items for school, then we'll be ready to go in a couple weeks. We have registration days next week. The kids are excited, but sad to see the end of summer.

I don't buy school clothes. They wear what they have until they start to outgrow it, then I shop. I used to do back to school clothes shopping, but it got too expensive. So now, I just check the clothes every once in a while and buy what I need when I need it. And usually, I make sure it is clearance or on a very good sale.

Garcy, I was 10 days overdue with Jake. It was not fun, but the second and third time around, I got smart and when I was at the doc, I cried alot and then said something seemed wrong when I was spotting a little. I got induced after those visits and I am glad they did that with Kay because she was 9lbs a week and a half BEFORE her due date. They say a baby gains a pound a week at the end so if she would have gone overdue like Jake did, can you imagine. AND she was short so all that weight made her really round and hard to push out.

Linz wants to go school clothes shopping so I told her I could drop her and a friend off at the mall. She asked me how much I will give her to spend, she doesn't want to tell me how much she wants because she might say a lower number and lose out if I was willing to give more.

I seem to shop constantly for ds. If it's not back to school, it's replacing something he is outgrowing. His school this year has a different dress code than last year (and he has outgrown all of last years school clothes), so I am shopping again.

I don't buy a lot of pieces at a time. When I was a child my mother made sure we had a dress for each school day (whether new or a hand-me-down) at the start of the school year. Way back then little girls could not wear pants to public school. When we were older (Jr. High age) we never had more than a couple pairs of pants/jeans or a handful of tops. I think this has carried through in my shopping habits.

A lot of Linz's shirts are short. Not short short, but short enough. She now wants longer shirts, and I'm glad. I told her that this will be it for quite a while, so she should either wait or choose wisely. I thought about giving her my discover card but she was afraid to use my Barnes and Nobel card the other day so this would probably push her over the edge.

I've noticed that this years shirts are much longer (between long enough to cover the waist and tunic length). A lot of girls will need to re-shop. My dd's been wearing tank tops under her shirts to be sure that her abdomen and back were covered (she's a lot older than your Linz).

It might "push her over the edge" if she encountered the policy at my store. If she were shopping without you, I would refuse the card unless she was an authorized user. If a customer's name isn't on the card, it is against policy to accept the card (unless we can prove that they are listed on the account). There are a lot of good reasons for this policy. When we were on vacation at a very well known amusement park a few years ago, my dh was standing in line behind me and they refused his credit card unless it came from him...my name wasn't on the card.

I saw some young men trying to buy clothes at Sears the other day and they wouldn't let him use his mother's credit card.

Linz does the same thing. I think some of those shirts are made to do that. We were at The Buckle and had some shirts and the guy asked if we wanted tanks to go under them. That was the first we'd heard that should be done. (it was a few years back) So it has helped a lot!

Julia, I had wondered about that so I'm glad you posted. Several of my friends have said they just give their card to their teen, and it had never occurred to me to do so, I just give her money. I didn't see how they could do it, especially with all the security nowadays. I just won't bother even saying anything to her. Thanks!

Thanks Roberta. This all just tells me not to do it. She never even asked, it was just something that got in my head from listening to others.

I had to run to town today so I stopped by the school to see if any of the 2nd grade teachers were around and I ended up talking to quite a few teacher friends of mine! And the principal did say they haven't hired anyone for the aides position yet. I did find out that they cut our noon monitor positions drastically! We are going from 5 noon monitors down to 3!! OUCH! We already didn't have enough! That bothers me. My thinking is that they are going to start asking for those position to be filled by volunteers too. Either that or requiring teachers to give up a prep period to do it.
I did get a chance to talk to two 2nd grade teachers, a kindergarten teacher (one of the half day teachers), a first grade teacher, and a 5th grade teacher. They were able to answer everything except if my kids were in their classes. The class lists weren't out yet.

Thursday is registration so I hope they have them done by then.

I still have to get a blog post done tonight. So I suppose I had better get going.

Blessings,

Garsy

I am so glad I closed all of my credit cards. It is hard because we are paying off what we have left, but I don't plan on EVER being in credit card debt again.

Today was my husband's son's 18th Birthday. His son was put up for adoption at birth and we have been in contact with the adoptive mother and with the son since Christmas. We spent the night last night over there for a birthday party today. We went to this beach and is was sooooo nice. I couldn't believe that Lake Michigan was that clean in places. I live right on the lake, but our beaches get closed alot because of e coli. We had a great time. AND we got to meet the dad who adopted him too because the adoptive parents are divorced. AND we got to meet his mom's sister.

The kids really had a great time. Kali and David really bonded today I think. She was just all over her oldest brother. She has pretty much stayed in the background and watched while we have visited in the past. Tomorrow, they are coming here so they can watch Kali in her very first competition (poms) at our State Fair on Thursday. I never thought I could love somebody like I love David. By that I mean, I love him like my own kids. I am so glad we met.

Garcy, when we were in grade school, we had maybe two teachers on the playground, but the rest were volunteers. It was always that way, but now that you mention it, at my daughter's school, the teachers take turns monitering recess. The principal is always out there when he can be too.

I can believe it because they are a school district and tight on money. They probably have to free up something in the budget first. That happens alot in schools.

And thank you Kathy, we did have a good time. I am starting to see my husband's son as part of our family though and sometimes worry that I am overstepping my bounds with his adoptive mom. I hope I am not doing that, but I also feel kind of like an outcast when we are all together because her and my husband have this sort of bond with David and all that happened when they gave him up for adoption.

I mean that is a huge deal and very emotional. I am just kind of here sitting on the sidelines, but yet at the same time, involved. It is sometimes a rough feeling.

Oh I'm not surprised at all that they are waiting so long. It's pretty typical actually. Oh I guess the monies are there, but the powers that be have simply not been in the offices long enough to do to many interviews yet. There have been times that aides have found out if they have a job or not the day before school starts.

What REALLY gets my goat over this whole budget cuts issue is that the uppity ups in administration, I'm talking superintendents, HR directors, High school principals, transportation directors and such ALL have company issued cars that the school budget pays for- INCLUDING the insurance and they get a stipend for gas purchases too! They also only pay, get this, $5 dollars a MONTH for their health insurance for them AND their families. From what I understand the average teacher in our district pays like $20 to 30 a month for individual care and up around $75 a month if it extends to the family! That just infuriates me because you know that they are not even goingto consider to giving up any of their benny's to maybe put a little bit extra in the coffers to help pay for what would directly affect the kids.

And if we think this year is going to be tough - I'm scared of what's going to happen next year. I was also told today that if the art or music teachers are out for a day or two that the classroom teacher's will likely have to take care of those classes too so the school won't have to pay for a sub. Now I can see that with art maybe but most of our teachers have NO musical training whatsoever! And I guess they are already talking more cuts of teachers, support staff, maintenance except for critical problems, and such.

That all said - I'm STILL happy with our schools - only because we have the best teachers around. I have NEVER met a teacher in either the elementary school or the middle school my kids have or will attend that didn't want to be there or have that passion for teaching and children.

Anyway it's late and I should be on my way to bed.

Blessings,

Garsy
