Yes they can and my in-laws are far more knowledgeable than I except my FiL would probably rather write his own OS than ever work in a Windows environment.

My kids can. My son was better with a computer at 18 months than some people are who are adults. I was proud of that but my wife wasn't at the time, lol.

No kids

Parents can but they aren't that interested in learning anything beyond opening up yahoo and forwarding a bunch of urban legends around.

My 3 year old cousins can play games on it if you open up the right programs for them.

My in-laws are both very proficient on the computer. They bought their first PC in 1982 and they haven't looked back. My mother is also proficient. She bought her first pc in 1983 and she hasn't looked back. My dad (passed away almost 9 years ago) was okay on the computer.

All four of my kids are proficient, and my oldest daughter is very knowledgable.

My In-laws and parents are pretty computer literate.

My children are VERY proficient regarding the computer. Then, they've never known life without a computer in the home. All of my kids started using the computer roughly around 2 years old playing simple games or whatever. They are often better at trouble shooting then my hubby and I!.

That's how it is at our house. My kids have never known life without a computer in the house.

LOL Me and my ex are technologically inclined. My son was about 9 when I went and bought a new computer. he asked if he could hook it up for me. It took him about 10 mins. I went downstairs came back up and he had it done.

My parents? lol My dad worked for a cell phone company. Tech support believe it or not. I had to teach him how to send a text message. We now live in different states and i get tech support calls from them all the time. (vista os) My mom runs her own business. Same thing. I had to teach her how to text and take pictures. Now were on MP3's. What a mess! lol

My 5 year old plays the computer games we have. He knows the basics and cant even read yet.

Mom just passed away and I thought about getting him a pc but he is 76 and I doubt he could do anything with it. I doubt he would even want to.

My 10yr old son can type better than me. He is smart because of the pc. I believe that it challenged him and he was determined to learn and learn he has.

Now if someone asks me about my husband, I might have to demure. He is not big on the computer -- except for mostly wordprocessing. So for him the computer is often a high priced typewriter.

My mom has no idea how to use the computer and no desire to learn how.
My Dad loves the computer as much as I do and is on it alot.

I think different families have different ideas of what 'proficient' means. Compared to my husband I don't consider myself proficient.

My parents have had a computer since the mid-90s. They do email and surf the web. My brother, my husband, or my BIL update and fix things for them.

My husband has tried to get my in-laws (his parents) online for years. They just aren't interested.

Even my grandmothers (one in her 80s, on in her 90s) are online with email accounts. Granted the 90 year old needs some help from my mother but she knows how to check her messages and that's all she wants to do.

My husband has a career as a programmer so we have pictures of the children teething on keyboards and helping swap RAM and motherboards (as toddlers). All of them could manipulate a mouse reasonably well by 2. I would say they are all adequate for their age ranges.

I like to limit computer time related to games or random internet surfing, so they don't have time to do more then that. If they wanted to explore specific programs I would be more open. No interest so far.

That's a good point, Tamara. I sometimes wonder if I'm too hard on my husband's ability with the computer because for years I worked with systems for a living. To me, he doesn't know a whole lot. Of course he says, "Why do I need to; I've got you to mess with it for me." [8|]

Yeah, that sounds like me.

His latest thing is teaching me how to code with Python. Every so often he'll come home with that look in his eye and start filling out charts of expressions and telling me it's just like learning a regular language...only easier. [8|]

I'm hoping one of the boys will take an interest soon. [:D]

My parents are both gone, but they did not do computers. My first in-laws are still here, in their 80s, and they use computers. My present husband's mother used computers until she died, and his father does, too, and he is in his 80s. My husband and I both can use computers, and our grandchildren, except for the two-year-old (who isn't interested yet) all can and do.

My children are pretty knowledgable.

My mum isn't too bad either. She does a lot of photo stuff on her computers.

My father? *sigh* he still can't set the VCR clock right. [8|]

He called me in a huffy mood one day and when I got to his house he was mad because his cell phone wasn't programming number properly. Riiiight...it's the phone's fault. [8D]

My children are avid users - can't say that they're very technically inclined but they use the computer as a tool - for media and media creation, to communicate, to write papers, research on the internet, etc.

Hubby has never been enthuiastic but has come around regarding the the things that where it benefits him to use.

My parents are at the same level as my kids, my dad is more technically proficient.

My inlaws...well...FIL got a computer about 4 years ago and has DSL...but his dementia symptoms are increasing and I'm not sure he ever uses it now. Even before he was the type that would click on pop-up ads and not know they were ads.

MIL hates computers. Hates TV now too. She is a very face-to-face person and I think she sees it as taking away from face-to-face time. Her husband's symptoms are increasing and she also has a grandson with Asperger's - this is somewhat a reaction to their self-imposed isolation at times.

My kids are all very good at using the computer. My parents are also good at it, my mom moreso than my dad, but he's good, too. My father-in-law thinks he's really good at it, and my mother-in-law is afraid she'll mess something up if she touches it. I think she finally learned how to check her e-mail.

But I didn't say my children use them! They are both far better with computers than I am. My son can build them. Or, at least, he used to, but he could again.

LOL! That's how my father-in-law was at first, then he messed something up really badly, and now he's more cautious and much more knowledgable.

My kids are 7, 10, adn 12 and can use a computer.
My parents use computers.
My MIL uses a computer.
My Grandmother is 91 years old and uses a computer. She is not super savvy but can give and send emails and surf the web. She won't buy anything online though.

Before she passed away, my mom used to like to do two things on the computer: playing solitaire and visiting websites like the Louvre.

For a while she did e-mail, but she lost interest.

We had a terminal linked to a timeshared system until we got our first computer in 1983. The kids, now grown, can't remember a time without computers. They use them to communicate and to manage information, like digitized multimedia. They don't do very much computing on them.

My father can - he was a computer teacher back when they introduced computers into schools in the 80's. We had a computer in the house since I was 5.

My mom can do the basics. She goes online, does email, etc. But she needs people to upload photos for her and order stuff of the internet.

My MIL....she is quite the story in our family! She just got a computer and now everyone in the family is hiding from her because she forces you into showing her everything. Our 17 year old nephew gets so mad because she goes into his room at 7am to get him to help her.

The best part of it (she's so eager and it's nice) is she can never pronounce anything right. So Google is "googoo", Wikipedia is "lickapedia" and Yahoo is "yahweh" (yes, God gives email accounts now.)

My daughter is 1.5 and she understands how the mouse works. She has her own "baby" laptop and she sits on it when I'm on mine and she types away!

My dad can't. My mom can type letters, read email, and surf the net. She is learning to do these things now and is having a great time with it. However, my sister is the one making sure that her virus scan is working properly etc.

I have no kids - but if I did, I'm assuming that they will because I'll teach them how to use it (or they'll probably learn on their own). I'm a little geeky and will probably have a couple of computers around the house ... so they'll probably catch on.
