Kirei -> Red WEdding Dress??? (7/22/2008 12:02:59 PM)

Hey Everybody!!
Wow it's been a long time since i've posted anything in Crosswalk. Well, I have a dilemma. Im getting married.

Well, marriage isn't the dilemma. the problem is that we are having an asian-influenced wedding and reception. I'm not asian, but i'm a student of asian language and culture and I'm also a little bit obsessed with it.

I want to wear (not an actual asian wedding dress) but a Red wedding dress. In many asian cultures, red represents the joy of the bride, motherhood, sensuality, womanhood, etc etc etc...

But in our culture, white is the traditional wedding color and it's sooo hard to find a good, deep red dress.

any advice??
Thanks,
In Christ
~Kirei

I'll bet you have will probably have to have one made. I know David's Bridal has white dresses with red accents (ribbons, buttons, etc.) I saw them when my niece was shopping for a dress. But entirely red...hmmm.

You can get really fancy bridesmaid dresses in red. Would those work? Or not dressy enough???

Well, you are free to get married wearing whatever you like--but, as you said, in American culture red is not associated with weddings, so you might get some throat-clearing and confused whispers unless you are getting married in a setting that understands the culture you are emulating.

Just be prepared to explain.

Zhi -> RE: Red WEdding Dress??? (7/22/2008 2:15:01 PM)

I've been to a few Asian weddings.

Some, they have a "costume change" halfway through, for half they wear a traditional Asian wedding dress and for the other half they wear a traditional American wedding dress. Others wear the traditional American wedding dress for the ceremony, then change for the receiving line and/or for the reception into a traditional Asian wedding dress. Doing either of those might be less confusing for your guests than trying to mesh a traditional American wedding dress with the traditional Asian wedding dress color...

Whose wedding is it?

Jes' checking. [;)]

But seriously, did your invitations also have an Asian influence?

Will the place where you marry be decorated in an Asian theme?

Those two things would help folks make the "Asian" connection.

Of course, it only matters if what they think matters to you.

BTW, what is your fiance's opinion on the red dress and theme? If he is on board.......

then go for it.

I think she is asking where to find a red wedding dress, not if everyone thinks she should.

Aww fiddle, Jalanda - you beat me to the punch. [:D]

I went to Google and typed, "red wedding dress" and came up with this as the first page of results.

It was the least I could do after running down the rabbit trail with the OP's thread. [;)]

Oooh--I really like the desi ones on the second site Landabee posted. But I guess they are more Indian than Asian.

My friend's wedding dress was black and she had a gothic theme wedding. People thought she was insane.

Buy good for you! I hate the little white wedding dress, and the colorful boque and the elevator music they play while everyone sips wine from crystal glasses like snobs after a golf meet. I mean c'mon, be creative!!! Thanx for going against the tide!!!

Thanks everybody!
And yes, I have Japanese invitations and although the wedding will take place in a church, the decor will be heavily influenced by Japanese culture. My fiance is fine with my idea to wear a red dress and will even wear a red tie to match =>

The reason I want to wear red is not only because it is the traditional wedding color in many Asian countries (and some African cultures as well - and i am black), but because the color really embodies who I am, more so than a white dress would. White gowns are very "princess" and red gowns are very "queen." When i see brides in white dresses, I think of cute, girlie, bubbly brides with high pitched voices who like pink and have been dreaming about their wedding day since they were five. And there is nothing wrong with that, but that's just not who I am.

When I see brides in red dresses, I think of a woman with purpose, a woman who is bold, diligent, confident, sensual (only with her husband of course!), a woman who is able to be taught and take instruction, but also one who is unafraid to step up to the plate if need be...

That's me.
Red is really the only color that I feel would accurately portray the woman that my fiance has decided to commit his life to =>

But I do understand that the tradition of a white dress is the prevailing standard in the US. So, I will just have to work a lot harder to find my perfect red dress =>

I appreciate the links!

revbob4God -> RE: Red WEdding Dress??? (8/13/2008 2:18:20 PM)

I think its fine. Of course, I think its always up to the Bride, providing the bride does not have an affinity for a toilet paper wedding dress.....

sudden -> RE: Red WEdding Dress??? (8/13/2008 4:09:25 PM)

If you live in a place where there are Asian shops you can, most likely, buy one. If not you could have it made.

Good for you for not conforming to the "white" dress.

Not all of us look good in it.

Sudden. [:)]

I know this is off topic, but I just have to say... If you'd seen me on my wedding day...in a WHITE dress...your perception of me would have been WAY off... I don't like pink...I haven't been dreaming of my wedding day since I was five (I actually had NO plans or choices made for my wedding after hubby proposed)... Your description makes it sound as if everyone you see who wears white in a wedding is like a little girl. I chose to wear white because it represents purity.

I have no problem with what color dress a woman chooses to wear at her wedding...but I would have chosen nothing else except white. I believe that a wedding also symbolizes to those present the bride coming to Christ...and to show that the bride is coming as a pure bride.

Sorry to get off topic. I just couldn't let this go...

I think she was just expressing an opinion.

shadowspring -> RE: Red WEdding Dress??? (8/13/2008 5:49:39 PM)

Thanks for the thread! My dd has expressed a desire to wear a red wedding dress someday.

We had an Indian friend show us her wedding dress/pictures at a home school event when dd was in grade school. In her Indian culture, red stands for purity. [:)]

You can also look at prom dresses and dresses for quincierras.

MC4JC -> RE: Red WEdding Dress??? (8/13/2008 9:23:19 PM)

Was gonna suggest the prom dress route. You might also check on eBay for a gown. That's where I got my purple dress for our son's wedding :)
