I am a casual Bostonian, and without fail every Labor Day weekend when I eat out, I get poor service because all the waitresses are new and they think because how I am dressed that I will not give them a good tip at all. [&:]

The children and I were traveling cross-country when they were very young, and exhausted, we stopped in Reno, Nevada, for dinner. I had not been in Reno before, so first of all, I was a bit in shock.

We gave our order, and half an hour later, we still were sitting there without seeing the waitress again -- at all. I was too tired to move and in a bit of a snit about the thirty-minute wait, so I decided to see how long it would take to get service, especially since we were the only customers in the restraurant that I could see. The children were occupied with their games and eating crackers, so no problem.

Half an hour later, she brought our food but no eating utensils. The children had order hamburgers and fries, so no problem. I ahd ordered fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, corn, and biscuits, so I waited, counting the minutes. Another half an hour later, not having seen her again, I decided to go find her and ask for my utensils. She (snottily) gave them to me. I ate my meal in a hurry to get out, but the biscuit was as hard as a brick and inedible.

Finally disgusted, I told them I would pay for the children's meals but that I did not want to pay for mine, relating the story to them. They told me to pay up or they would call the police.

Did I leave a tip? Not one cent.

When Lynn was pregnant with our first we took the Lamaze classes. After class one night she had a craving for a baked potato. Wendy's had them on the menu with tons of goodies to put in/on it. So, we pull into the drive up window and ask for a baked potato. "What was that?" we heard... "A baked potato" I repeated. "You want what?" came the reply... "A BAKED potato" we said once again. "You want fries with that?" we heard... "NO! We want a BAKED POTATO." "I didn't get that." said the speaker... "We'd like to order a BAKED P-O-T-A-T-O, those things that grow underground and you put butter and sour cream on them!" we yelled into the microphone. "HUH?" was the answer to that request...

Needless to say, we didn't get a potato that night. We drove on out past the window and as I recall I might have given them the number one sign with my middle finger as we went past. We ended up at another drive in getting a quarter pounder burger with fries and a chocolate shake. Shoulda gone there first I suppose....

Now I would have told them to be my guest and then relay to the police why you were refusing to pay the bill. Oh, did you eat the food? Because then that might have been different then instead.

I ate some of it, but it was cold. The potatoes and gravy were inedible, as were the biscuits. I ate the chicken, because I was hungry.

Back then, homeschoolers didn't make waves, because CPS was an eye in the corner of every room, in every state. I was a widowed homeschooler at the time, adding to the threat, so I lived in fear of CPS and police. When they threatened me with police, I paid, because I wanted to keep my children.

When visiting Italian or French restaurants we always speak and order in English.

It is very interesting to hear the conversations amongst the waiters/waitresses speaking in Italian/French; commenting on their customers, mentioning the tips that were left, and at times being somewhat rude about their clients.

Then as we leave, we bid them goodbye and (in their perfect native language) we make a comment about what they'd been saying about the customers. You should see their faces !!!

We recently went into a new (though a chain) restaurant. Almost everything went wrong.

My entree didn't have sauce on it.

Kerr: "Isn't this supposed to have meat sauce?"

Waitress: "I'm not sure."

Kerr: "The menu says: covered in our delicious special meat sauce."

Waitress: "I guess you'd better tell them about it."

This thread is really bothering me, because I want so desperately to pop in here and tell about a WONDERFUL experience at a restaurant, but I can't! This is irritating!

We usually eat out twice weekly (more before the recession). The only time we have a truly great restaurant experience is when we purposely and specifically instigate it by some action of our own.

We don't eat in places that are expensive. For the two of us, our bill is almost always $36 or less + tip. Here, that's pretty cheap, and that includes such places as common American food, Asian of all sorts, and Mexican, NO Denny's-type places.

But it irritates me that when someone requests restaurant stories, I can't come up with a good one or a special one.
