If the family pet was hurt?

Our puppy was stepped on tonight and his leg fractured. He has a splint on it but he can't even stand up on his own yet and they said he can't run or play for 4-6 weeks. He even needs help to go potty. I am cancelling a physical therapy appt I have tomorrow and won't be leaving home much the next couple of weeks, especially without the pup if we're going somewhere he can't go.

My husband is the pastor and I have a lot of responsibilities in church. I asked if he'd let me stay home Sunday and he said he needs me but that our eldest son can stay home. We can't bring the pup because it's a mission church and we meet at a larger church so we don't own the building. I'm thinking maybe we should let our son sit outside the church in the shade with the pup in his crate (we could take turns that way) rather than staying home.

Jesus mentioned how anyone who had an ox fall in a hole would get it out on the sabbath and I know a shepherd would leave the 99 to go find one sheep, but is it okay to miss church for our pup?

I'm not sure that you would need to stay home for a couple of weeks. However, I wouldn't see any harm in letting a child miss a Sunday for it.

The only problem I see with any of this is, feeling like you have to be at church. if you feel like your pup needs you, stay with him. You came up with some good alternatives too. Although I have to ask, why is ok for your son to miss church but not you?

I understand about being the pastor's wife. I also understand that you are human and just like the regular folk too, and would appreciate the members of the congregation cutting you some slack from time to time.[:)]

Personally, I would question the motives of folks who would not care for a pet, and force everyone to go to Church.

IF I was the Pastor I would ask the Church to pray for the puppy.

After a week the puppy will be better able to fend for itself and being alone for a few hours will not be a problem, then all can return to normal.

Depending where you live, it can still get pretty hot in the shade. Also I'd say it depends on how long you're going to be at the church for ~ is the puppy going to need water during this time? The major concern that I have with you taking the puppy to church is that there are going to be lots of folk wanting to see him and it may cause him undue stress ~ not to mention you and oldest son as you try and keep them away from him!

I'm pretty sure there are enough folk at the church who would be happy to step in to help for a couple of weeks ~ they just need asking (and the sooner the better)!

rcjames made a great post. Wait and see how puppy is doing next week before you decide what to do about church.

If I was able to, I would stay at home; however, perhaps your husband needs your physical help at church in which case I can understand him asking your eldest to stay home in place of you.

LOL, yes!! I think we called it menno-goy
not only would he mow our lawn and watch our pup, we then got to criticize him for his lack of faith.

Don't worry about what we say or what others in church say. If, after looking at some Scriptures, and prayer, you believe it is OK - and you're conscience is clear - do it. If not and you come up with an alternate and your conscience would then be clear - go for it. If nobody likes it or agrees with you, then they can go take a walk...in Christian love.

I agree with Darling. It would probably be hard for your husband to get along without you, but if i were you, I would stay home and send my son to services.

I am certainly not a pastor's wife, but I acquired a precious little kitten, when her mother abandoned her in our very deep window well one cold, rainy, sleety day. I bought her a carrying case and took her everywhere. I was worried about her, because she was crippled and so young -- about 6 weeks old. When it was time for services, maybe I should have left her home, but I just couldn't. I brought her and kept her discreetly in her little case.

On Monday, things just were not right for Chatuli Kitty Wompas. She wasn't acting right. I took her to work, and just when it was time for my weekly meeting with my boss, I asked to be excused, instead taking her to the pet hospital. She did not come out alive.

I initially felt a bit guilty for being so concerned that I took her to services, but not after that. That little life deserved everything I gave her and more, if it could have been possible. She gave me so much in those short five days, in May of 2005, that she was mine.

Thank you for letting me remember again.

The Law of Moses has a few things to say about the mistreatment of animals. None of it good.

Staying home with a sick pet or livestock should not be a problem, even for the pastor himself. Of course, arrangements should be made for someone to fill in for him and not just leave everyone in the lurch. But priorities are priorities.

I guess I should update. We ended up not staying home or leaving or son. Son was worried about staying home alone (he's never stayed home more than about 15 minutes). In a small language mission church we just don't have the resources that larger or English speaking churches have regarding getting a spur of the moment fill in. If he hadn't gotten better I would have stayed home anyway. Dh almost slept in the floor with the pup the first night he was hurt.

By the end of the week, puppy was getting around better than he should and we've had to confine him more than he wants sometimes (no running for 6 weeks). We decided he could go a few hours without us. We put him in our (very) small kitchen with gates up at the entrances and I left him his bedding from his crate, a water bowl and a puppy training pad. He laid down and pretty much hung out on his bed except to get water and go potty.

Thanks for all the replies. Someone from another board gave me some verses from Proverbs that really eased our minds. I had ouside pets as a child and young adult (never had a pet injured before though) and this is our first pet since getting married almost 12 years ago, so it's a new experience for us.

Believe me, dh loves the dog. After over $500 in veterinary expenses and taking him almost everywhere with us this last week, no one could convince me otherwise.

I'm glad it worked out and that God healed the dog enough so it could stay home alone. That's just like Him to provide a solution none of us think of. [;)]

He is definitely good (all the time), and able to provide abundantly above what we could ask.

our sitter always went to the opposite service ...if we needed her for first she then went to second service...
