Clusty is a simple search engine. Just type Bank Of America in the search box and hit <ENTER>. Same as any other search engine. Then click one of the BOA links that comes up.

Ok... If you still have the ">" prompt in the command window, type exit. If not, skip to the ext step. Type nslookup, then type exit. All I need to know is what DNS server is being called on. Should look something like this: C:\Documents and Settings\abc\datafiles\tech>nslookup Default Server: vnsc-bak.sys.gtei.net Address: 4.2.2.2 > exit C:\Documents and Settings\abc\datafiles\tech>

It said "server unknown" I feel like I'm taking up too much of your time. Would you like to stop now?

No, not unless you're getting sick of it. In the same command window, type ipconfig /all and tell me what the "DNS Servers" line says.

Yikes. That makes no sense. Go back to page 2 of this thread (ncpa.cpl, etc, etc, etc until you get to the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties" window again) and make sure you've specified 4.2.2.2 as the primary DNS server. Also make sure when you get your first ncpa.cpl window, you are right-clicking the correct network interface. I assumed you are using a wired connection. Is this true? Is this Vista, by the way? (I'm terrified of the answer I'm going to get...) If you DID specify 4.2.2.2 as the DNS server, but ipconfig is still showing something other than that for a DNS server (sounds like the address of your router -- unacceptable), then set the DNS server setting back to "Obtain DNS server address automatically." We do not want to use 4.2.2.2 permanently. I'll check back in a bit.

I am not familiar with the Vista "network stack." Something may have bit me in the butt with regard to Vista, and I don't know what it is. Are we using wired or wireless? If wireless, we changed the wrong network adapter (my fault for not asking). And if so, there is still daylight ahead. All you need to do is go through the same steps for the wireless adapter as you did for the wired adapter (ncpa.cpl, etc.). That 192.x.x.x address is the address for your router. This tells me that Vista still doesn't know what DNS server to use. That's why I asked if we reconfigured the correct network adapter -- the wired one or the wireless one. I'll check back again in a bit. I would love to hear that we configured the wrong network interface (wired instead of wireless), 'cause that would explain everything.

I have been reading up on IPv6 in Vista. Apparently Vista enables this by default. So in addition to everything we've talked about, you may want to try DISABLING IPv6, so the network uses the traditional IPv4 exclusively. From a command window, type ncpa.cpl. Right-click the adapter you're using (either wired or wireless), then click Properties. In the list of items, UNcheck the check box next to Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6). Make sure Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) is checked, then click the line once, then click the Properties button. The window that comes up is where you can set the DNS primary server to 4.2.2.2 again, if you want to give it another shot. Then click OK on this window, and once that window closes, click OK on its parent window (the Local Area Connection Properties window). Basically what I'm saying is to disable IPv6 for the interface you're using (wired or wireless), and make sure the DNS server is specified as 4.2.2.2. Then check the results: go back to a command window and type ipconfig /all, and tell me what's on the "DNS Servers" line. As you can see, I'm not too good at giving up. But if you've had enough of this, I'll certainly understand. This stuff's in my blood so I have pretty much an infinite tolerance for it.

I also did all this, but none of it helped either. Disable the IP Helper service: 1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter 2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties 3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply" 4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session 5. Click OK to exit the dialog Disable IPv6: 1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter 2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties" 3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) 4. Click OK to exit the dialog NOTE: You should do this for each network connection. Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag: Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233 1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter regedit and press Enter. 2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: 3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID} 4. In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey to be updated. 5. If the key DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag does not exist, use the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then press ENTER. If the key exists, skip this step. 6. Right-click DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then click Modify. 7. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK. 8. Close Registry Editor. NOTE: You should do this for each and every GUID subkey. NOTE2: (GUID) is a mnemonic for the individual subkeys, the actual text "GUID" does not appaer.

So, for the correct network adapter, with your IPv4 DNS server set to 4.2.2.2 and with IPv6 disabled, ipconfig /all now shows 4.2.2.2 as the DNS server. True? If so, good. Now, from a command window, type nslookup bankofamerica.com. Tell me if you see those three 171.x.x.x addresses. If so, good. This means the computer can resolve DNS names to IP addresses. Also please tell me if the second line of the results shows the 4.2.2.2 DNS server, or something else. Now start Firefox, and in the URL window at the top, enter bankofamerica.com. Can you get to BOA? If not, try entering 171.159.65.173 in the URL window. Just the number -- no http or .com or anything else. Now can you get to BOA? If not, click Tools, then Options, then the Network tab, then the Settings button next to "how Firefox connects to the Internet," and tell me if the "No proxy" radio button is clicked. You should not be using a proxy except in very special circumstances. I'll be back later to check.

> This is like a geeky soap opera ROFL!! No, this is Michelangelo's Last Judgment! I would offer to fix it remotely for her but we don't know (& therefore trust) each other. This is like going back to 1995. This may turn out to be one cache-polluted DNS server somewhere. Or one router somewhere containing wrong lookup tables. I am guessing it's nothing on Kat's system. But it doesn't hurt to go through the exercise. At least we can say we gave it a go. Kat, I will be here until around 11:30 Eastern, then have to go to another site, but will be back around 5 Eastern. Once this mess is over, I can help you set your system back to original (unless you already know how to do that from what we've done so far).

ETA: I forgot to mention this (it happened the last time too), but besides my banking sites I also can't access the Mozilla Firefox website. I thought that was interesting and don't know if there's any correlation.

Ok, let's list some knowns: 1. You are on broadband, either cable or DSL. 2. You're not using a proxy. 3. You have modified the correct network adapter to a) disable IPv6 and b) to specify 4.2.2.2 as the primary DNS. 4. "ipconfig /all" shows 4.2.2.2 as the DNS server address. 5. You can get to some Web sites. 6. This started happening a few days ago, but it wasn't because of any changes that anyone made to your system. 7. Using BOA's IP address (171.159.65.173) in the URL window of your browser causes a timeout. 8. Your daughter uses a dial-up connection (modem + phone line) to get to the Internet. 9. She, too, is getting timeouts. Q1. Does she get timeouts to the same Web sites you do? Any correlation there? It is conceivable firefox.com was down or overloaded. A patched version of Firefox 3 just hit in the last 24 hours. Maybe there were too many downloads going on when she tried to go there. Let me know. Your daughter's experience was helpful to me.

Could you please describe in painful detail your home network, including how your PCs connect to the Internet. Too much detail is better than too little. If you guys are both using the same DSL modem, but she is direct-connected to it via USB while you are Ethernet-connected to it (either directly or through a router/firewall), that would explain a lot of what's going on. Also what is the brand and model number of the DSL modem? What is the brand/model number of your router/firewall?
