My son is moving into a brand new apartment. He gave me the floor plans and in looking it over I noticed no linen closet. Being the Mom that I am, I see this as a big negative! He has to have a place to store his towels and sheets! He does have a small alcove in his closet in his bedroom. I think I would be able to put something in the space that would hold his linens. He doesn't want anything feminine, though. I went into a local decorating store and they had metal shelving units that I think would fit the space, but there were (gasp!) leaves at the top. He said it was too elaborate for his taste. I'm looking for some ideas that a young adult male would like!

Also, he doesn't have a pantry, either. That's a big negative, too. I can't see why any new apartment complex would build apartments without pantries and linen closets. This move of my son is stretching my imagination to the max!

Is there room in the bathroom or maybe the corner of his bedroom or in his bedroom closet for a couple of those big rubbermaid containers. This is the first place I've lived with a linen closet. At my last house I kept a large rubbermaid container in the bathroom and that held enough towels for my family of 5.

As for sheets, he could do the same thing for sheets. I mean a single guy isn't going to have that many.

You can go to Target, Bed Bath & Beyond or any other home store and browse the college dorm section. They have many pieces that can be used for storage in any room of the house and they have many sizes and styles to choose from.

Unfortunately - many small apartments are this way. The first apartment hubby and I lived in had NO storage space at all! We didn't even have a closet!

We ended up stashing our linens in a storage container under our bed and our towels in a crate under our pedestal sink. Our wash clothes in a basket on the over the toilet shelf. Our pantry was just one of our kitchen cupboards. It's all I had. For our hanging clothes we found an old sales rack at a garage sale and had that in one corner of our bedroom.

We've never had a linen closet and have always kept bathroom linens under the sink and bedroom linens on the top shelf of the closet or stored under the beds in rolling containers. We're pretty minimalist though, when it comes to linens. We keep what we need for ourselves and the guest room and let everything else go, with the exception of quilts handmade by dh's grandmothers. We don't keep four sets of sheets for each bed and 30 towels per bathroom, as I have seen in other's homes.

Can he build painted wooden shelves to meet his needs? Dh has made shelves in an alcove in our office using decorative moulding as a support with 1x12 boards as the shelf. We put more moulding on the front of each board so they look like "built-ins" instead of stuff dh put up to make do, if you know what I mean. [;)]

We have a pantry now and I love it, but before, we just made do using one of the cabinets as a pantry. It works just fine, especially if he is just keeping foods to meet his needs and not over-stocking. We really have too much room in our pantry now and I wish it was smaller to force me to be a better shopper and cleaner-outer.

I live in a really small house and have very little room to keep kitchen linens in my kitchen ~ it's needed to store food and crockery etc. Likewise, my bathroom is too small to really store anything. My bathroom and bedroom are upstairs. I'm not allowed to attach anything to the walls incase of damage.

For my bathroom towels and sheets, I use underbed storage boxes. For my kitchen towels I bought some plastic storage drawers (which sit neatly under a dresser in my lounge. Simple, cheap, plain. I may update when I can afford it, but they work well for now.

When I was in a place like that I got one of those spring-rod over the toilet shelf units. It had two shelves and a cupboard, and then I kept the towels on top.

For sheets, he doesn't really need more than two sets for his bed, right? So for those and any extra blanket, I would get an under-bed storage container.

Don't most young people living alone (or young couples) just keep the sheets on the bed and the towels on the rack? You take them off, you wash them, you dry them, you put them back. The end.

Pantries are mostly for families too, to my mind. If you don't bake and you only have one person, just how much food needs to be stored on-hand long term? Come to think of it, I can't imagine what's taking up all the space in my pantry... [sm=tongue.gif]

There's also usually space on top of the cabinets for larger items. Perhaps he would appreciate some sort of camouflage system so he can use that area without it looking untidy to you? Perhaps metal mesh panels hung from the ceiling to just the top of the cabinet, that can be lifted up and outward to 'open'. And a matching step-stool.

I'm laughing at the "1 set of sheets and 1 set of towels" quotes in here...

cause they're mostly right...[:D][:D]

freestanding cabinets can be had very cheap on your local craigslist or even a chest of drawers with an extra drawer for linens would be good.

Or stainless steel shelving which is relatively inexpensive at Sam's or Costco.

I lived without a pantry or linen closet most of my life. I agree, let him figure it out. If he is on his own it is his place. Mom just gives advice when it is asked for.

I have limited storage here at my house, and i keep my sheets in one of those bags that the comforters come in, those clear plastic bags with zippers? I have all my sheets stuffed in there and it's on my closet floor in my bedroom.

I don't have a linen closet or bathroom cabinets in my house.

Our linens: Are in a rubbermaid tub that slides in the floor of my closet
Our towels: Are rolled up nicely in an attractive basket in the bathroom

You can find all kinds of storage furniture that comes flat in a box and needs to be assembled, and a lot of it is pretty utilitarian, which it sounds like he would prefer. Chest of drawers, dresser, wardrobe would all work for the linens, and you can buy pantries and even little narrow cabinets (I think they're called jelly cabinets?) for the kitchen.

This is what came to mind when you said he did not have a pantry.

There is a drawer for kitchen towels and the lower cabinet can be his pantry. The top could be used for a microwave or toaster oven. He could even eat up to it if he does not have a kitchen table.
