What is the Worst Book You've Read?

I read a 300-400 page "mystery" novel called "The Weatherman." On about page 50 the actual weatherman was arrested for the crimes in the book. After about 300 more pages, it turns out he was guilty.

I started Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and she was just too whiny and neurotic. She was so bad that I only got to through the Eat section before I had to chuck it.

At Risk by Patricia Cornwell. It was so bad and sparse that it was double spaced in order to give it the appearance of a full sized novel.

House by Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti. The collaboration just didn't work.

Rethinking History. It was only partially good at describing the study/philosophy of history. It's basically an existential mess that gives good reason to dispute the existence of itself.

House (Dekker and Peretti), and Monster (Peretti) didn't grab my attention, but weren't anywhere near as bad as Rethinking History.

A novel called Middlesex. I had to read it for a class in school and hated it. Not only was it depressing, but it was immoral and I have never disliked reading a book more.

I hated "The Lovely Bones." It was sappy, sentimental, new-agey, Oprah book of the month, tripe. And its basic formula is basically very cookie cutter at the moment. There's a thousand novels right now just like it or better.

One of the worst books I've ever started was "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole. To me it's proof a Pulitzer Prize doesn't mean a good read.

I don't force myself to finish a book if I don't like it unless I have to read it for a class. And the last time that happened was some time in the mid 70's so you'll forgive me if I can't recall the title. [sm=hippiesmile.gif]

For me it was The Joy Luck Club.

I had to read it in high school, and I just could not get into it and our teacher was making us do so much work on it. I could not stand it.

That being said, I may actually read it again one day to see if it was the book, or the work that made me dislike it so much.

Interesting, I like Shakespeare and Dickens and loved The Joy Luck Club.

Hannibal, the sequel to Silence of the Lambs. I really liked SofL in college so I checked out Hannibal right away. I remember throwing at the wall at one point. It didn't stay true to it's characters and was silly and boring to boot.

I also hated She's Come Undone and have avoided Oprah books since then.

Those are probably not the worst books I've ever read but I seem to have blocked out worse ones.

The first book wasn't too bad, though the character development was kind of weak, but there was absolutely no good reason to publish that sequel.

Hannibal, and also Hannibal Rising were horribly written books. You almost wonder how the same guy could have written those and also written Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon, which were excellent.

I don't pay much attention to O's book club, but Wally Lamb wrote another book "I Know This Much is True", which is excellent.

Confederecy of Dunces is one of my favorite books ever. I've read it three times. It's genius comedy.

I guess everyone has different tastes. [:)]

I've got to go with "The Da Vinci Code". I was so disappointed, because I loved "Angels and Demons" so much. "The Da Vinci Code" just didn't live up to the well-written prequel.

I guess so. Much as I'm not a big fan of Dickens, I would never rate him as the worst, and I love Shakespeare.

Thankfully, I've forgotten the names of so many books I've read that weren't very good. But the one that I think is one of the worst is Last of the Mohicans. It is a confusing and just a poorly written book. When I read it in high school I thought I was the one who was messed up, because it's a classic, and hey, if I didn't like it or thought it was bad, then I had to be the one who didn't get it. Then I read Mark Twain's The Literary Offenses of Fenimore Cooper," and boy was I relieved. Twain nailed it. Oh, and just to be clear, Twain is speaking of two of the Leatherstocking Tales, but all of them are not good including Mohicans which is second. I guess Pathfinder and Deerslayer he considered the worst.

My dd feels the same way ---- she barely could understand the plot for the first one! But that's better than me, I read the first one and didn't understand the plot at all.

Hmmmm..... Probably a Canadian classic "The Stone Angel" which was recently turned into an award-winning film.

What a horribly depressing book with few redeeming features. I don't understand why they force teenagers to read this in high school! Maybe it's to warn people not to end up like grumpy, lazy, self-absorbed Hagar Shipley. Personally, I think I'm a grumpier person for having had to read it [;)].

Most overrated (but not terrible) book I've read: Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte). After having been positively wowed by my still-favourite Jane Eyre, I jumped on the opportunity to read something by Charlotte's sister. I found it moody and yet very boring at the same time. I don't really understand it's appeal!

Never even heard of it. Sounds like a diabolical mating of algebra and geometry, and that's just wrong.

Least amount of pages in one book I ever read was the text for my calculus class my senior year in high school. I read three sentences and dropped the class.

The Humor of Christ found it at a used book sale and picked it up thinking it would be done in a manner such as Chuck Swindoll handles his subjects.

1000 year old toast would have been easier to consume.

A science fiction novel by a renegade Baptist that included Jesus in one chapter, but was so vile, pornographic, and blasphemous overall that I put it in the trash after reading it.

Since science fiction is a branch of juvenile literature, this attempt to contaminate the reader and the subject is pretty hard to forgive, let alone forget!

When I was about eleven I read the autobiography of Ulysses S. Grant...one of the most boring books I've ever read!!! Almost the whole book is about strategizing an army and all the different wars and such he fought in...he'd have like one or two sentences about his wife giving birth, then go back to planning and fighting! Can't he talk about something family? At least, that's what I remember from when I was eleven.

Monster by Frank Peretti was easily the most boring read of my life. [8|]

Michael Heiser's The Facade ranks right "down" there too.

Same with anything by L. A. Marzulli.
