Wow, what patience and perseverance!!! I knit for more or less instant gratification. I love to do socks, gloves and things like that, also because I like to buy hand-dyed yarns, which come in small amounts, just right for small projects. Besides, they're so portable, I can just whip them out in any waiting room or on the bus or train. I get lots of knitting done in front of the telly, too. When it gets cold in autumn I have a pre-Christmas sale of my stuff and get myself some extra dosh [sm=icon_smile_approve.gif]. Yes, circular needles are the way to go if you want to cast on lots of stitches. There are long, straight needles as well, but a flexible circular is easier on your wrists, because as the the knitting gets longer and heavier it can follow gravity and lie in your lap. A great resource for knitting, with lots and lots of tips and demonstration videos for all stitches: http://www.knittinghelp.com/
