2 Corinthian 12: 7-10
So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, [1] a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

I found this to be very freeing in admitting my weaknesses. The current trend in this world is to never ever admit to being weak, to having problems, to turn everything into positive while ignoring our weaknesses. We are to elevate ourselves so we can appear better, stronger than the rest. But in this verse, Paul is telling us that it's in our weakness that Christ becomes evident in us. It's when we admit that we are broken people who are following Christ despite this brokenness that Christ shines through us. It's like Job. It's when he followed God despite everything that He suffered that God became glorified.

I think there's a false type of impression we give to people about what following Christ means. I'll continue later when I get a chance.

ORIGINAL: Grace-N-Mercy

When I'm discouraged and don't know where to turn, I just open my Bible. Occasionally, a perfect verse will be on the page I open to, but that's very rare. In my Bible, I have highlighted & underlined many verses over the years and I can still remember why, in most cases, I marked those verses. There is a great deal of comfort just in opening the Bible.

Here's a few things that jumped out at me. I have lots of notes and jotted down something Beth Moore wrote: "Single moms may ask God for a double portion of whatever they need. At no point are they asking too much of God." We can ask for more than what we need. We may not always get it, but he does not have a problem with us asking.

(CDL, you'll love this) Deut. 24:1-4 I was going out with a guy once and his ex-wife started getting really friendly with him again and I was wondering about the Biblical thing for him to do, and I happened upon this verse. I realized that God was in control of the situation and already had an answer for him.

Sometimes when I'm feeling down, I'll pick up my flute and start playing... 2 Kings 3:11 states that while the harpist was playing, the hand of the Lord came upon Elisha. God moves through music!

For a while, Psalm 18 really spoke to me:

4 The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. 5 The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. 6 In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears. 7 The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry. 8 Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. 9 He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet....

I knew that with a God like that, I have NOTHING to fear!! He is the knight in shining armor that I've desired; nobody else is going to come close (though I won't have a problem if they try ) During the years I feared for my safety, I knew that I only had to fear for the surprise-factor... God had everything under control. And looking back, He provided perfect protection!!

I so love those verses. I first came across them when I was making a book of verses for my friend who had (HAD! NOT HAS! Thank you, Lord!)
cancer and a very bad prognosis. I had never had this picture of God. It's beautiful, isn't it?

Ok...

as Lisa and I are in a funk today, I decided to go over to Pooh's Thotful Spot and think truthful thots. Amazing. When you ask, God provides. So here's my scriptural prayer from today for Lisa and me, and anyone else who is feeling funked.

From Philippians 3 and 4

Father, I'm feeling down today for lots of reasons. That just proves that I'm not perfect yet. But just like Paul said...there isn't any way past this but through it. So I'm going to press forward. Give me and Lisa, and anyone else reading this strength to press forward; after all...the reward is THE PRIZE OF THE HIGH CALLING OF GOD IN CHRIST JESUS. And that's bigger than an Oscar!
Help us to stand firm, Lord. When we start to think into the negative past or the frightening future, remind us that we are not to be thinking there. The only thing we should be doing in those places is PRAYING. You were in our past with us. You are here today with us. And you are already in our future. So we can with great peace lay our requests before you. For me, I request that:

1) You use me to further your kingdom.
2) You provide financially for me now, and in the future. Help me make wise decisions.
3) You put me together with some wonderful man that I can love, adore, and serve.
4) You see to it my computer gets fixed--or I learn to live with out it.
5) You help me to be glad that my children are growing up and leaving the nest...and they are all following YOU. Remind me that YOU will NEVER leave me, and help that be enough for me, cause right now it's not.

Thank you for the kind people on CW who share our troubles. Help us to help others and remember that helping others is a source of joy we can tap at almost any time.

As for me, I will find a way to follow the instruction to REJOICE in YOU today.

Amen.

When I'm in Funkland, it always helps for me to reflect upon who God is. When I think about all he's done for me and will do for me--in light of His character--the fog clears.

Psalm 8

I listened to "How Majestic" as I was driving earlier this afternoon. It's impossible for the Eeyore virus to successfully attack me when I listen to it.

"How Majestic" by Jadon Lavik (he starts playing at approximately the 1:23 time marking). It isn't the full song, but it's beautiful. Psalm 8 that I linked above supplies a portion of the lyrics.

Shema, I enjoyed that song! But I have to admit that sometimes it is a stretch for me to remember how much God has done for me when I'm in Funkland...I want what I want when I want it. When I don't get it, I'm not feeling very grateful, lol!

Fortunately, God is merciful. I can even ask Him for the gratitude that I ought to feel...and He gives it.

That song is running through my head! Very catchy...

The fruit of the Spirit is a good prayer to pray both for oneself and for a future spouse:

Lord, today would you fill me and my future spouse with your Spirit!? We desperately need more of you in our lives. When you do fill us, we will be able to resist the works of the flesh...and we'll recognize them in others, too, so that we can be wise in our dealings with the world. I pray that we would evidence love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and faithfulness, gentleness and self-control in relationship with those around us.
When you finally bring us together, Lord, we will need these qualities even more toward each other. Make me so full of Yourself, Lord that these qualities are what draw my future spouse to me.
Show me what I need to change to let more of your Spirit operate freely in me: show me what I need to do to be more loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and disciplined. Give me the ability to function in these fruits for You and for this special person, the love of my life.

Come on, now folks...help me out here a little. Surely more of you are praying scripture or have scripture references that relate to your future spouse. Please post them for our edification and encouragement.

I read this a few minutes ago. It applies to several threads, but I figured I'd post it in here.

Some of us have been waiting a long time for God to answer our prayers concerning a mate. When it gets discouraging, here is a good prayer scripture to remember and pray:

Habakkuk 3:17-19

Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor the fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer's; he makes me tread on my high places.

Sometimes I have to even ask for God to fill me with rejoicing because I am so sad about my singleness...but if I ask, He works.

This morning my baby GP4 posted the following scripture on the refrigerator:

I Corinthians 15:38

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Out of the mouths of babes and all that!

This is a good one to pray not only for ourselves when we get weary of following God yet not having our hopes met but also for our future spouses. It's just as hard for them to wait for us as it is for us to wait for them. We can pray this to help them remain pure, too. We certainly expect them to remain pure, but we should be praying for them to remain pure, also.

And praying for us all to have the confidence that our labor in maintaining our righteousness is not in vain...that's a biggie! Whether I marry or not, it comforts me to know that God won't waste any of this...

Wow! I was reading through here and clicked on the link of 'My Utmost for His Highest' devotional and it was exactly the one I read this morning!! Its such a neat reminder that God really knows what I need and when. I've had that book for a long time and never really read it much. I really must get into it more.
