Have you noticed a spring in the step of every Software Developer this week? Bill Gates retires Friday as head of Microsoft – everyone else in the Software Development Business moves one step up the ladder. The question we should ask about Gates leaving the industry is, is this the first of the lights being switched off at Microsoft or is this simply the end of an era?

Complete story here. http://www.turbocash.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=125&Itemid=1

The first question that needs to be asked is "What did Gates actually code?" The next question is "Why should his passing matter?" ; )

He was very intelligent, an excellent marketer and perhaps the greatest oppourtunist of his time and lucky. Realistically though where would he be had AT+T and IBM not got shackled way back in the day by Anti-trust stuff? Phone company couldn't sell an OS, IBM had to outsource the OS. He also got away with one and Windows. They borrowed the entire GUI from Apple who got it from Xerox. Amazing that one day "look and feel" aren't copyrightable and the next you can "patent" one-click ordering.

It's the passing of an era not the end of MS.

I've heard he has personal/medical reasons for doing so ...

I watched a program that basicly gives Gates credit for holding this nation back technologically.

As usual, it was all about money. We have his operating system in almost every pc by design and because we didn't know any better.

It was all about the money from the consumers viewpoint. We bought his cheaper, and often inferior, products; because we wanted to pay the least amount. And we knew better, but still made that choice.
