My poor Bible is falling apart. [&o] It is a hardcover 1978 edition of the New International Version, which I received for my 12th Easter. (I believe 1978 was the first year Zondervan published the NIV.) The binding is shot...which makes it very difficult to use.

I love the NIV...and am considering a NIV Quest Study Bible . My Dad just got my Mom a Quest for her bday in May...and she is really enjoying it. To give you an idea...here are a few features I like about it:

* Nearly 7,000 side-column Questions and Answers addressing basic textual, historical, and theological questions.
* Verse numbers in color to indicate a Question and Answer on that verse.
* Book Introductions answering questions about each Bible book.
* Scripture Link cross references.
* Small in-text letter "D" after words with definitions in the dictionary.
* Concordance, dictionary, 16-page full-color map section, new 7-page full-color timeline section, and reading plans assist your study of the Bible.
* Single-column format.

The only thing I don't believe it has, which I think I would like, is Christ's words in red-letter.

So.....after coming to value so many of my new CW friends' thoughts, views, and opinions, I figured y'all would be the perfect people to ask: Which Bible do you currently use, or prefer? And which features do you most appreciate?

The NIV is my old friend. I love it because it's familiar.

I've recently begun reading the NLT. I like it because it brings fresh perspectives.

All the really literal people love the NASB. I'm not a huge fan of it. [;)]

I think you should always have your Strongs in hand whenever reading any translated version of the Bible though.

My favorite Bible is my NIV Study Bible.

I also like the ESV, especially when it's time to read the poetry books like Job and Psalms. The NASB doesn't flow real well.

I have a NIV Study bible...its good.

Hadda buy another one as my first bible wore out. So I go into the book store, buy one..and I thought it was black...being color blind it wasn't until months later when I found out it was a deep marroon.

I have the NIV Study Bible which I use for my nightly devotionals.

I have the NIV "Power of a Praying Woman" Bible I take with me to church and Bible Studies because it is considerably lighter.

I have the Message version which I use for reading through the Bible. It reads more like a book and flows easily.

I also have a couple other versions I use for cross reference when I get stuck on a passage.

King James and NIV mainly (I find I can learn Scripture easier in the King James version however); I also like the NKJV and RSV for comparing.

I also have a little 'Daily Light' book which I carry around and it has Scriptures on a given theme for morning and evening and I find this is really helpful for learing the Scriptures as the portions are short and not so difficult to remember.

i've listened to this new testament on CD when i was driving. it is a very easy "read" (or "listen," as the case may be). kind of a nice change of pace.

As a general rule of thumb, the more literal a translation, the harder it is to read and comprehend. Contrary to popular belief, literal isn't the best way to go. I know for some this is blasphemous.

If you're looking for a translation that is both accurate and readable, then the ESV is a great choice. The NIV isn't bad either, so if you really like it, keep using it.

i got a NASB back in high school.....but i never really cared for it. i think my Mom thought it was a more 'modern' translation that would appeal to me.....but i always like the NIV better.

it was good in that it was a soft-cover and smaller...so easier to take to camp, weekend youth group trips, etc.

thanks! i did a little research...and i like what i've been able to read of the ESV. gonna have to see if i can look at one at the store this week. (i hate when they are in plastic and you can't open em up, don't you? i wanna see the beginning of a chapter, look at the reference stuff, etc. lol)

i love those 'power of a praying woman' books! i didn't even know there's a Bible 'with' em.

Now what is the ESV? (English Standard Version maybe?)

Also, I think that my next Bible will very likely be a NIV also.

In my opinion, there's nothing like the good old KJV. I feel that it's the closest translation to the original text. Other translations tend to change key words which can then change the complete meaning of a text. And other translations delete verses in their entirety.

I do admit that the KJV can be a challenging read for most of us. I try to rely on the Holy Spirit to guide me, but admittedly, I sometimes just can't seem to wrap my brain around some of the verses (usually when I'm tired) and I will turn to the NLT for assistance.

Hence, I like the 'People's Parallel Bible' which has the KJV and the NLT side-by-side. I got mine from Christian Book Distributors: www.cbd.com That site usually allows you an inside look at a few of the pages of any book you are considering ordering, including Bibles.

Now thats wear I will be getting my next Bible from? Also, most of the Christian Book Stores here have closed, so I do not really have much of a choice, but I will happily still support my States economy. [:D]

yup....that's what it is. i've only read excerpts online on www.christianbook.com , but i like what' i've read so far. gonna have to check it out further.

I find the NKJV study bible is FANTASTIC! The best of both worlds. easy to read and a good literal translation. (New King James Version) It also has kept many of the words in it that the NIV has taken out. (like begotten) which really ticks me off. jmo. [:)]

I don't think the NIV *took out* those words...I think they just translated the original Greek or Hebrew into a more modern word.

I currently own an NLT Life Application study Bible, and love it. There are a ridiculous amount of notes, but they are all quite helpful. The translation is easy to understand and definitely my favourite out of the ones I've read. It also has the advantage of sounding like today's English when read aloud, as opposed to the NKJV, which my church has in the pews and the pastor always reads from.

The Life Application study Bible is also available in NIV, NKJV, and KJV, as well as some other translations, if you prefer those.

I originally started out with an NCV children's Bible and a KJV. KJV takes time to understand, and I grew too old for a children's Bible, so I bought an NIV. I was later given a pocket NLT which I used for church. I found it easier to understand than the NIV, so I switched over. I still have the NIV to compare with. In the Bible studies I'm in there is a very diverse selection of translations, which is nice for comparison as well.

There are several websites with many different translations of the Bible on them, like biblegateway. They might be helpful when deciding on which translation to use.

I started out with the old KJV back in the day, and continued with it mainly because I studied a lot using the Strongs and back then they didn't have (at least I don't think they did) the Strongs for other translations.

The main Bible that I still use is a KJV, but when I study I use a lot of online and computerized study tools, and I look at different translations. Also, my main Bible is a Thompson Chain Reference Bible, which I kind of like the way that it's laid out, except from some of the stuff written - the little blurbs summing up what's in the chapters - I get the impression that Thompson was a believer in replacement theology, which I'm not. (Replacement theology most simply put: the belief that God completely 'threw out' His covenant with the Jews and replaced the Jews with the Christians so that all of the prophetic words to the Jews now apply solely to the Church, and that God has nothing more to do with the Jews at all).

There are actually people - perhaps even some reading this - who believe that the KJV is the only real "inspired" version and all others are "of the devil". My question to that is, what does that mean for people who don't speak English? In truth the KJV has been through many revisions. What we have now that we call the KJV is not actually written in the language of King James' day. Their language was a lot more similar to German than to modern-day English.

I use as my transportable, the NIV Experiencing God Bible.
Otherwise I use online Bible versions
(from crosswalk.com & biblegateway.com).

My Mom uses a loose-leaf NIV & KJV.
You buy the pages & put them in a notebook.
If notebook breaks, cheap to replace.

I have a stack of Bibles that I use for different purposes. Until recently, my primary study Bible has been the NIV study bible.

I bought a KJV/NIV/AMP/NASB parallel Bible that everyone in my small group tells me to bring because of having different translations right there. I like it for comparison purposes.

My primary study Bible at the moment is The Reformation Study Bible in ESV. When I first opened it, it was as though I had never looked at a Bible before. So fresh, new, exciting... inspiring. There are alot of great text notes in it.

I will probably get the ESV Study Bible when it comes out in October.

I have one of these Bibles. I also have a NKJV, a New Living Translation, the JPS Hebrew-English Tanakh (for Old Testament), KJV Catholic edition, and an NIV Study Bible and a NKJV Study Bible, and 2 KJV Bibles, one Study Bible, as separate volumes.

I like to spread my Bible study across several translations. For readability, I like the New Living Translation.
