Place your votes!! And tell more about it. This isn't necessarily about what you actually live in, it' about your favorite syle, although they could be one and the same. I'll tell mine later, but I want to hear from others first.

I'm in Florida so Mediteranean is really what's out there. I loathe the idea of ever buiding again. But, from time to time, it's fun to tour models and look at plans. This is my favorite floorplan to dream on right now. It's not exactly Mediterranean but it's the perfect layout and fun to dream although the thought of building is just a nightmare.

I live in a ranch style house & have been here for over 40 years.

Ps103 -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/5/2008 11:49:33 PM)

I said "other," because I was unsure if "cutting edge modern" was the same as "contemporary." I doubt it, since the style I am talking about is from the 70's[8D]

I figure contemporary should be my favorite, since that is what we live in[:D]

Funny thing, though, I always wanted a Victorian house. Talk about a change...

Colonial

woodwind228 -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/6/2008 12:56:51 PM)

I LOVE the craftsman type houses! Especially those with some land to go with it - 5 acres or more would be fantastic. Still dreaming...

horsepill -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/6/2008 1:52:22 PM)

Ever see the movie 'Sleeping with the Enemy' (the one with Julia Roberts)? I loved the house at the beach on there with the huge windows (minus the mean, abusive husband of course). I'm not fond of it simply because it was at the beach (though that's nice), the style could be in the mountains, or on rolling hills, or wherever, and be so lovely. I'm not quite sure what category this would fit into on the poll, I'm guessing cutting edge modern? Coming in at a close second is the log cabin style, those are gorgeous. And the third is Victorian.

The above is all about which house style is favorite. Overall, I prefer landage. For I would rather live in a trailer on lots of land than a multi-million dollar home on a less-than-acre lot.

PrincessDonna -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/6/2008 8:25:58 PM)

Log, with lots of land. My parents live in a log house that my dad and husband built after their modular burnt down. It is beautiful and I love that they built it themselves. We have agreed if something happens to my mom or dad, we will try to buy the house to keep it in the family, even if it means making "mortgage" payments to my brother and sister. Their life insurance would pay for the house and then some, and then the house belongs to the three kids. So far, we're the only ones in any kind of shape to even want the house.

We live in an old late 1800s house. I don't know the style. Is fixer-upper a style? LOL I'm not all that into old houses. They seem to have a lot of problems.[&o]

lexie -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/7/2008 6:59:26 AM)

Hmm...I'm not going to vote because I don't really know any of those names (not sure if we just don't use them here or if I'm just ignorant to it.)

There are some beautiful Tudor-style homes not far from where I live. They were built in the 30's and 40's.

I would love to have one of those, but they cost close to or above a million dollars so those are out of the question for me!

car2ner -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/7/2008 9:31:54 AM)

My taste keeps changing... I like most everything on one floor. I like log cabin exteriors and want to live in the woods were you have to find the house by finding the mail box. But Tudor catches my eye, too. And to have a private courtyard would be lovely.

The house we are selling is an adorable 2000 style home with extra features and some brick facing, etc. The house we are renting is the typical 1970's tiny ranch. What a switch. Our idea of the future dream house we will retire in keeps changing.

sunshine4God -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/7/2008 10:52:14 AM)

I love old houses.I think they are soo cool.Ours is really old and was tons of work to clean up but looks great now.It has so many quirks about it like lightswitches outside doors and etc.Its a colonial and is really pretty also.

APZR -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/7/2008 11:16:38 AM)

I don't really have a favorite style, I match the style of house with the lot. When you do a proper job of matching the house to the lot and the surroundings, it's a beautiful thing... looks like it was born there. Right now I'm building a traditional two story with high gables, kind of European and a similar style that csl7037 has linked.

uncabeeil -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/7/2008 12:01:09 PM)

My city is loaded with turn of the century victorians, and I love them. I love the turrets, the widow's walks, the leaded windows, french doors, a fireplace in every room!

Mrs.X -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/8/2008 11:47:36 AM)

I like San Francisco Victorians the best

horsepill -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/8/2008 1:18:37 PM)

I also like the idea of taking an old abandoned store building or office building and turning it into a home. They could be really sharp.

That is my fav. too! It's what I grew up in. It's not the style of house I live in now, but the next house....

3cappuccinosmom -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/9/2008 2:06:33 PM)

I voted other. I don't really have a favorite. There are a lot of styles I really like, and I could enjoy living in just about anything, *except* "cutting edge modern". I do not like "contemporary" style architecture at all.

These days, I'm dreaming of a yurt. I think that would be soooo cool! [8D] I could survive in the kind of ones you see in movies set in Mongolia, but there are modern, more stationary ones that are huge and gorgeous.

fluffmonkey -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/9/2008 2:52:53 PM)

They are beautiful. But like others have mentioned, I like everything to be on one level. Close to what I would like

monamie -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/10/2008 8:40:04 AM)

I voted log because the dream home I've been putting together in my head for a few years now is a log home, but what I'd REALLY like to have is a hobbit hole.....[:D] (For real! I love the way they look on LOTR, and here on the plains of OK, they'd be tornado-proof!!)

McGuinessMagee -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/13/2008 4:00:42 AM)

Either Picturesque (not the best example I've ever seen, but the only one I could find fairly quickly) or Australian Homestead styles.

HisCovenant -> RE: What is your favorite house style? (7/13/2008 3:57:44 PM)

I love any home that seems gracious and spacious whether it's colonial, log, or super modern... but I voted for Mediterranean courtyard because that seems the most idealic to me with the beautiful gardens, fountains (or sea views,) and the open feel of the rooms. I think they have the best of everything. Here are some examples. We live in a home similar to this (halfway down linked page) in style, although smaller.

Thank you for the great responses. My favorite style is Victorian, and in my younger days, I dreamed of restoring an old Victorian, but I've heard that nowadays its better to build new and just have a Victorian style facade, not that I'm in the market for either, lol.

However, I also appreciate other styles, too, and I like Mediterranean too, and all the styles everyone listed. I hadn't thought about a yurt or a hobbitt hole before, though, that's cool!

His Covenant, there is a neighborhood across the street from me that is mostly mediterranean homes (the whole neighborhood is custom built homes)..you would love it.

When I was really little, I used to imagine a tree house style type house, like on Swiss Family Robinson, and when we would go to church, I would imagine if the church were converted into a house.

That sounds beautiful! Around here, we don't have many meditereanean style homes... just the ones that are custom built on estates (real large estates, not an "estate-styled neighborhood.") They are in the millions price range, so we'll probably never have one... but it's a nice dream to see myself sitting in the lush garden with a beautifully tiled water feature shaded by a gracious home with rounded lines and natural, earth materials. [;)]

I just reread this post to edit it and am laughing at myself for saying that we would "probably" never own a home priced that high. Just so we all know... I'll never own a home that expensive. Who am I kidding? [:D]
