Some of these things I find silly: that 4 different teachers expect that they each come the first day with 100 sheets of loose leaf paper. I mean can't they just say that all work and notes are expected to be on looseleaf notebook paper.
I'm surprised they don't specify college or wide ruled or rounded or pointy corners.

didn't look closely at my kiddos list did ya? I always buy wide ruled anyway.
Personally I didn't know they made loose leaf paper with rounded corners.

My daughter just said that for some classes/teachers you have to leave the package in the class. Otherwise I would just send in one package on the first day of school.
Actually my fifth graders list does specify wide rule notebook paper and spiral notebooks. But that's not a bad idea since I think it'd probably be easier to read their writing with the wider lines at that age for most of the kids.

I just bought one package of 400 sheets...would that be against the rules 'cause it wasn't four packages of 100? I would imagine so, since a lot of the supplies your child takes to school are taken from them and distributed among classmates later on. Anyway, my 400 sheets was a stellar deal, lol.

I went to Target today to see if their back to school stuff is out yet. They look like they have just started getting it ready. There are a few things set up and a couple things on sale, but so far their major back to school blitz has not started yet. I haven't checked anywhere else.
ETA: Schools don't start here until after Labor Day. The first day of school will be September 3rd.

I just started picking up things when I have been in the stores. My oldest is going to college this year so have no idea what to really send with her, just the basics I guess.
My middle daughter is in high school and they don't really get a list, it is just basic stuff. There are a few classes that will specify a certain notebook. sketch book, graphic paper, etc.
My youngest is in middle school and she will get a list when she registers but I pretty much know from the others what she will need. I picked up things I have a hard time getting if I wait, like low odor dry erase markers.
I think the reason the teachers specify things like 100 ct packages of paper is that is how they are usually bought this time of year. I didn't look closely but that is what I noticed was at Wal-Mart and Target. I don't think a teacher would be upset to get them in say 2, 200 ct packages or 400 ct packages.
I was glad to see the list wanting certain colors of folders and things because then I didn't have to stand in the line waiting to go through all the different designs of folders and plus they are cheaper. I alway stocked up on them for when they would need a new one because they don't seem to last the entire year but at 10 cents a piece it doesn't break me.

I wish our schools would specify solid color folders since they are so much cheaper.
The 400ct notebook paper would make it hard to leave 100 sheets in a room if that is what the teacher asks (middle school); sometimes they do, but not always. I suppose you could trade the 400 pack for 4 100 packs, and then just leave one in the room. But the thought of doing that would stress my kids, so I wouldn't do that. I've never seen a 400 pack of notebook paper anyway though so I've never been tempted to buy one.
Last week when I was at Target and Wal-Mart both had some supplies out, but neither were totally set up yet. School starts August 19 for us.

Our teachers don't specify for the most part certain colors. They simply say PLAIN colored folders except at the 1st and 2nd grade levels where they wanted certain colors. And I ALWAYS stock up when they are super cheap. Which is why getting 50 of them at a penny a piece was so cool!
Found out this morning that Ty will need several spiral notebooks, a few folders and at least 2 binders - one for Geometry and one for Honors Biology. Just dug a little bit on the schools website and kinda judged from what was required last year for the classes he'll be taking.
Thankfully we bought him a guitar last winter for his birthday/Christmas present so that's not a purchase we have to make right before school starts.

If a teacher gives you a piece of paper asking for specific things for her/his classroom then I think it is that same teacher you should communicate with if it is causing financial hardships for you. (this discussion was closed in the other thread) but I am not blaming a specific teacher per se, just saying it is best to discuss your personal situation with the teacher one on one . Also if you are a struggling parent trying to provide basic school supplies and school uniforms the PTA may be able to offer assistance.
I served on the PTA for several years and I know we helped with those type of situations.
Church groups often collect bookbags and school supplies for those in the community so you may want to watch your local paper for such an ad or ask around.

I noticed that prior to the one thread closing, comments were made about needing scientific calculators ... and there were also comments about what to get for highschool.
When I was in highschool, we all had to get a very specific calculater (TI-83) by Texas Instruments ... and when I was in school, that calculator alone was around $150!! We were expected to get it our grade 9 year and use it all the way through. I'll tell ya, I still have it and it STILL works beautifully ... and it does all of the calculus and trigonometric functions as well. (Plus -- as much as our teachers hated it -- most of us uploaded Tetris to it to play during downtime in class)
As for other supplies, we were told to specifically NOT get the single subject notebooks (unless we were going to make our own study notes in them). Each class required it's own 2' binder with 200 sheets of paper ... and each week the entire binder would be turned in for evaluation. (Some teachers went so far as to specifiy binder colour, but that wasn't the norm)
For those with impending highschoolers, I'd suggest calling the school ahead of time, and finding out which teachers your kids have ... and then leaving a message for each of those teachers asking specifically WHAT is needed for that particular class. I mean, you can quickly draft a note and have it put in each teacher's mailbox with a request that they call you back as soon as it is convenient for them ... most teachers are at the school a full week before classes begin, readying their lesson plans and classrooms. Knowing even that week before what is required will save the headache of the "first night shopping madness" when the kids are presented with "the list"

We have a TI 83 that my hubby found on campus at his college. Just sitting on a bench outside a building. He took it in to the lost and found with security and they said they would notify him in a month or two if no one came for it. Two months later he got a call from security and they gave it to him, per their policy.
Our eldest has used it for a couple years for Geometry and Algebra and will likely use it again.
Picked up a few things at Walmart and Office Depot today. Keep adding things to my basket of goodies, and checking them off the list!

Finally I got scizzors on sale at Target. Every other year I've missed the week they have scizzors on sale, which apparently is at the very beginning before anyone much is shopping for back to school yet. I bought three pair of scizzors, because they are one of the items I find out of their place most often when I need them.

I think I have everything I need. I spent about $130 (not including backpacks) which is about what I spent last year when our school did the prepackaged supplies. That was such a hassle for us (the Board) that we didn't do it again this year, though. I splurged a little on backpacks because theirs both completely fell apart last year.
My son's teacher (2nd grade) put the special 2nd grade handwriting paper on the list - the one thing that you can't get at Walmart. I went all the way down to the teacher supply store and bought 4 packs for me and my friends. I remember when dd was in 2nd, they ran out of the paper and the kids had to share at the beginning of the year. So I warned the lady in the store that the rest of the 2nd grade would be coming in - as soon as they figured out where to get the silly paper. That's the one thing I just wish the teacher would go get - add the $5 to the materials fee (for whatever that's for!) and just leave that off the list, please.
I need to get about four more uniform shirts. My friend and I might drive down to that special store (only two options for vendors!) on Friday. She wants to take the kids so hers can try things on....I would so rather leave them at home but we'll see. If I take dd, I know I'll end up buying scrunchies and accessories and stuff I shouldn't though.
I'm just about ready. I wasn't in the mood to get into this thread till now. We spent all last week at the school for VBS and now dd has had cheerleading camp - back at school at 8am the first three days of this week. If I've got to drag everyone out of bed early, might as well be time to go back! And after three days of cheerleading camp, I just found out I've got a meeting with the principal tomorrow - why couldn't it be while she was already there!??! Oh well. I'm already living at the school, like I said, might as well be back in school.
I do want to make the most of the next three weeks, though - maybe I'll start a thread about that!

And I had to use it in college, as well, where it came in very handy since our math teacher taught us to program in financial formulas the week before our financial formula test in accounting, lol.
