ORIGINAL: ladyichigo 2 Timothy 4:7-8 (New International Version) 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. What exactly is "the race" that Timothy is referring to here? Is it life on this earth? Or is it in reference to our faith in Christ? If this race is in reference to our faith in Christ, does that mean those who have fallen away, or those who are non-believers not in the race? Paul (if he is,indeed the author of Hebrews) used the same image there, after listing a stellar array of people of faith he says: Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2) He is obviously referring to our walk of faith. The testimony of the witnesses he has listed is eloquent and unmistakable. We are to run the race that God sets before us, over coming obstacles and trials to complete the course we are to run. Tim
