Jen,

Does he also understand that by practicing with the team it means that he cannot do any plays during that time period?

I also think Cindy's idea for a contract is a great idea.

The thought of plays had not even occurred to me. It would be rather all-consuming. He is a good swimmer, though, and could be a great swimmer with the kind of training he would get on that team--which is far and above what he gets on the summer novice team. I don't want to hold him back, I just want to take care of priorities.

This is probably a good time for him to learn that he can't do everything. He'll have to decide what's more important to him.

Well, Jody and the boys just left, taking all my snack food and five dollars that I had in my purse. Seems his g/f messed up a bank deposit and he's broke. This happens every single time. (the being broke part, not the girlfriend part) I guess I can look at it as paying a baby sitter so that I can have a day off.

Anyway, I have the day to myself, for the most part. Church, some online exams I have to take, and I will definitely need a meal ready when they come back, but other than that, my time is my own! He has to go back tonight so he's actually here for less than 24 hours.

May God richly reward you for your kindness in giving and not making a scene about it happening all the time.

Jen,

I agree that it seems like it is a good thing for him. I mentioned the plays because as Cindy said earlier, I don't want him to come back to you and say:

"Moooom! You never let me do what I want. You never said that I couldn't do plays while I was on the swim team. Why do you hate me so much!"

In fact, in the contract you should spell out that by doing swim team, Brandon understands there will be no marital arts or drama (plays) while he is doing swim team.

Hopefully we can save you some heartache by stating these things clearly upfront.

ROFLOL!

It seems something happens to a teenage boys brain that makes things stated clearly upfront seem strangely foggy...

quote:

I honestly sat down and tried to listen to his complaints, but they were all baloney.

He said I told him he couldn't do the Columbia Crossing...really? Then why have I emailed Grandma asking for ideas on training?
He was mad I bought a cheese grater two years ago.
He said I didn't pay enough attention to know what his hobbies were. I asked him which hobbies those were, but he couldn't list any.
He was mad that he couldn't join the Channel Cats team because I can't drive him all over the northwest to meets...and said if I would let him get his driver's license when he turned 16 he'd be able to. Really? That isn't for another year, and you would still need a car and insurance and gas money!
He said we treat him like a servant. Apparently chores=servitude?
He said we walked all over him. Oh, is that what it's called when one person in the family gets the lion's share of time, energy and finances so he can do all sorts of fun things while his brother sits at home with nowhere to go and his mother works her rear end off?

Honestly, things that come out of his mouth are so NOT based in reality.

Yeah, things do get strangely twisted. Yesterday he said, 'it was nice that dad could make it to all my swim meets last year.' I was like, 'He came to ONE MEET! ONE!!!'

I was invited to lunch with the seniors group today. I love hanging out with older people. Then one went to Goodwill with me (she was headed there anyway, lol) and while there, I found two tops for two bucks apiece! One is a really nice black knit top and the other is more a casual friday top, but I really needed some more, so that was a boon.

Now I am ready for 'a piece of quiet', as my kids said when they were little, and here I am with only the pets, so that is very nice as well.

I am running on 3 hours of sleep. Funny, but running on 3 hours of sleep was much easier 20 years ago.

However, Moses had a great time doing the play and got his comic moment in, so life is good.

My dh was being a TOS violation, which always happens on the days I most need him NOT to be a TOS violation.

I'm now at work trying to stay awake. If you hear me snoring, kick me.

Jennifer--I LOVE going shopping at thrift stores! Actually, I just got back. At one store I bought three swimsuits(gotta stock up now, since I won't be able to get them over hte winter when the fishbowl reall tears them up!), a running skort, a denim skirt, and a running shirt for ds3--all for $8. At the other store I bought four books (like I need more books...), another swimsuit, and a cyclign jersey--spent a bit more here--$11.

Ds2 is being on his best behavior. Huh... Not sure what to make of it. I'm just letting know that I do notice. Not sure what else I can do.

"Well, I found this pill in with mine, and I took it, but I wrote down the numbers and letters on it before I took it just in case it was something bad."

Yeah, right . . .

Wah! I am stumped this time.

I have never had an unhappy foreign exchange student, and this one has been crying off and on ever since she got here. She told me it was allergies at first, because she would cry in private and be sniffling when she came out of her room.

Note to self: I know, I know, don't expect the unregenerate to act like believers.

Anyway, she talked to her chaperone on the phone for an hour last night, and I thought things were better. She seemed happy the rest of the night, anyway.

But then this afternoon she went back up to her room, and when we called her down to go somewhere, she was crying again.

Her chaperone last night told me she was NOT home sick! Then in her broken English she said, uh, I have no idea what she said actually. Ted talked to her today and the best he can tell is that she said that our student wants to be closer with us? Uh, then come out of your room and hang out with us.

I am so frustrated. I think that even though she is 15, she was not emotionally ready for foreign travel.

She doesn't seem eager to learn about America or eat our food. I mean like picky little kid stuff. I offered a blue corn ship with hummus to try and she took a microgram and immediately downed a huge glass of water. This was pine nut hummus, about as plain as it comes.

Kids.

Pray for me, ya'll.

That's the reason for the contract. When he does say "You never said I couldn't...." all you have to do is get out the contract, re read it to them and then remind them that they signed it, indicating that they indeed did understand the terms.

If they pull the line of "I didn't read it, I just signed it" then they now have another practical learning experience demonstrating why you never sign something you did not read or understand. And that if you do that in the future, you will still be held responsible for fulfilling your end of the contract, just like You will be doing now.

Shadow,

I thought she looked young in the picture!

We had many exchange students when I was growing up and the worst one was Jane form Denmark. Ugh. No matter what, the girl could not be happy. She didn't even end up staying the entire 6 months with us she moved out before then and boy were we relieved! So I do understand.

Hopefully she will acclimate herself quickly, and this will be a temporary bump in the road.

Thanks for the encouragement, Narnia.

We went to the video store and she wanted to rent High School Musical 2- not the first pick of American 15 yr olds, but a sweet movie we can all handle.

And she's happy for the moment.

There is a poster here named Harvie who has an unpleasant experience with a foreign exchange student last fall. The girl ended up leaving after a week or two because they could not handle her behavior any longer.

Umm, you are NOT 20 years younger than I am!!!! Sheesh.

Praying, Shadow. I don't know how all of that works - does she have the option of going back home if she's truly miserable?
