Jen,

If he does go to that girl's house, hopefully the parents will at least call you to let you know he's there. Praying.

Thanks Ezri and Shadowspring. I am hoping that the whisper campaign will turn out to be a positive for us. With so many events coming up, I am hoping that people will come out just to see why we are so bad. Sort of like rubber necking or as the entertainment media says: "There's no such thing as negative publicity"because all that talk keeps your name out there in the public eye.

Hopefully people will be so intrigued with what they heard that they will have to come see for themselves why we are so bad.

Works for me!

Sounds good, narnia!

Jenn,

If I were that girl's mom I sure would appreciate the heads up about Brandon's recent behavior.

Speaking from experience, hormones plus a rebellious spirit equals trouble in the making. You two moms should try to be on the same team where your teens are concerned. It worked for me for many months (not so good at the end but think how much worse it would be if there had been no friendly communication between us at the start? Ayiyiyyiyi!)

I posted this on another thread, but wanted to put it in here too to get your opinion. What do you think makes a good Church camp?

Merv just got back from church camp. It was a frustrating and tiring week for him. Our camp has different churches take turns being deans and this was a first time group in charge. I use the term in charge loosely because, apparently, it was complete chaos. Whenever Merv tried to make suggestions, they informed him that they were in charge and he should butt out. The saddest part was that they didn't feel that Jr high kids could handle much Bible time. The kids were kept going from 7:30 am till after midnight every day, but only had about and hour of Bible total in the whole day. This was a huge group of campers and only one child made a decision for Christ. There was also a problem with kids running loose in the middle of the night, but, once again, they were in charge and Merv wasn't supposed to worry about it.

This seeker sensitive, all fun no Bible approach seems to be the way our churches are headed, and it scares me for the future. Merv said there was one period when his cabin wouldn't settle down so he and a helper took the kids into the woods and had a Bible lesson. He said the kids were so eager to learn. They kept asking him questions and didn't want to leave when it was time to do something else. The deans had said they didn't want to be Bible beaters, but these kids were really hungry for God's Word and not getting what they needed. It makes me want to cry.

Jennifer--are you talking about the conversation you had with Brandon or the conversation we had with ds2??? Honestly, this twisting of truth, the everyone hates me, etc. is EXACTLY what we are dealing with. I have NOOOOOO clue how to deal with it. So, it's not just you.

I have a half marathon tomorrow. It's my only one this season. I really want to break 1:50. However, I am feeling so whipped by ds2 that I don't even have the energy to care about the race.

Brandon went to my dad's house to talk to my stepmom. She brought him home. She talked to me for quite some time and I feel a bit better now, and not so much like an abject failure. She's a good person to talk to since she raised two boys and had some of the same problems with hers. She's a tad worried about Nate, because he could get left out pretty easily. I have been trying to keep that from happening, but will try harder.

Thank you all for praying.

Hischoosen & Jenny... How I feel your pain when it comes to your children! My DD has spurts.

2jsmom ~ My DD leaves tomorrow for church camp. I am hoping they will have supervision. I am dreading that I told her she could go. I REALLY wish I would of sent her to JR. Camp and waited one more year for SR. Camp. She will be traveling with other people for 7 hours to get there and leaving at 3am. I know it will be an exhausting week for her. To me, a church camp should be where the focus is on getting to know Christ and having times we can reflect on how our relationship is with Him and with others. I'm hoping it isn't all a bunch of socialization... but I think it will end up being like that.

Not all camps are the same, Annie. I hope the one your daughter goes to is better than the one I described.

I couldn't resist answering the question either... I just told it to Russ. He thought is was way too easy. What is wrong with easy?

We just finished VBS and I am exhausted. Everyone else is at the VBS picnic/bash. I am home with a miserable Rebekah. It took forever to get her finally calm down a bit.

I can't wait until all the kids are asleep so I can really relax.

OK, this probably isn't the correct place to put this but does anyone here homeschool in GA? Or in any other state you are required to submit monthly attendance records? I should only have to have a neat list of the dates and that he attended instruction, right? I have to keep track of what subjects we cover because some are required but that's not really part of attendance, I don't think.

Does my logic work there anyone, please? Ugh, feel free to remind me I'm an idiot for enlisting and ending up in this state.

And btw, those of you dealing with stubborn sons make me feel so much better that my boys won't have been the only obstinate, sneaky ones when they hit that age.

I know nothing about Georgia, but attendance and what is studied on what day are independent of each other. I don't really understand how any state requires attendance, since the kids are where they live. Odd. Obviously whomever wrote that law didn't get it.

Betterisoneday- this is the right place! I am an army wife in NC but I found the information you seem to be needing.

GA state law from HSLDA.

GA home education Association website

GHEA Getting started page HERE

GHEA suggested Attendance form can be found HERE

Declaration of intent from GHEA site HERE

Hope it all helps!

We are home from this week's swim meet. Brandon did fine but got disqualified. It's pretty obvious at this one pool (where we have 3 meets a year) the judges are very biased and make such rulings only against opponents. My sister did very well and has made improvement.

Brandon wants to swim on the high school team. I am battling with whether or not to do that. Have any of you done sports at your local school?

Thanks for the attendance form link ezri, I had found a declaration of intent but this attendance thing was driving me crazy.
I'll have to go search that site to see how GA interprets the laws.

Jen,

It is so frustrating to finish a race and then find out you were dq'd-worse when it is politically motivated. Happened to me a couple of times in college.

You might want to find out when the high school team practices-depending on how vigorous the program is some schools practice twice a day with the first practice at 5 a.m. and the second one after school hours. Then you have to decide how he gets to the early morning practice, should there be one.

Another option is the Y-most local y's have swim teams, so that could be another possibility for you to consider.

today we spent most of the day trying to get decent pictures of all the kids together...boy is it hard to get five kids in a good mood and all looking at the camera at the same time!!! Anyway...success!!!! I got lots of great pics.....but HERE is one of my favorites of the whole gang....and HERE is one of my favorites of Justice (it's a larger pic of my avatar pic). Sometime next month we are going to go to a portrait studio (probably sears) and get a whole family pic. since I can't very well get in the pic and expect the kids to smile for the camera right. Plus...we haven't had a real family pictures done since years ago...last time was when Jake and Hannah were little (Hannah was 16mo), so it's about time.

This team practices every weekday evening, and it's a big deal for him to do that. It means dropping out of karate for four months during the season (nov. thru feb.) and losing the 3 nights a week that he works with me on schoolwork.

Could the high school swim team be something he could earn by a serious attitude adjustment?

I don't know. That doesn't seem to work well for him. And I want a real heart adjustment, not just putting on an act to make mom happy, kwim?

Yeah, I know, but there really is something to "fake it till you make it." Often if you act in a certain way, the feelings will follow.

Of course if you don't let him do it, you're gonna be the Wicked Witch of the West again, and if you do, you're gonna have some serious logistical issues. Sometimes ya can't win for losing.

That's the truth, for sure. Logistics could be an issue...the school is a couple blocks away but they don't practice there--too cold to use the outdoor pool. So they practice at the raquet club, which is on the other end of town, across the highway, and I don't want him biking (we towed a car from a fatality accident at that intersection...people are in a huge hurry to get home, some of them commute HOURS to work and really push it, speed-wise). He could take the bus, though.

And, by evening, I don't mean if they mean late afternoon or after dinner. If I get the job they submitted me for the other day, I will get off at 4:30.

One nice thing, though, is that since it isn't AT the school, there is none of that bummin' around stuff--these kids are pretty dedicated. There are already several HSed kids on the teams (the two schools practice together).

It sounds like it might be doable, then. If it were me I might make a contract with him - if he joins swim team he is to do A, B, and C without fail and with a good attitude. If he doesn't, maybe he gets a warning and then has to skip a few days and then is permanently off the team, or whatever makes sense to you. Write it up and make him sign it. Make sure everything is in very concrete terms so he can't say I thought you meant . . .
