Hi everbody
I'm Julia. I just put in notice at a six bed ICU. I hope to travel soon. I've worked in healthcare more than 10 years now. Sometimes healthcare is just like hitting against a brick wall!
Currently at this small hospital, ( 85 beds) we still have central schedule and are expected to float to every other floor in the hospital. Yuck.

Kat_D, I was joking about working a double. I actually got along well with the staffing office. I worked as relief charge and needed to be friends with the staffing clerks. I would not do your job in a million years. It seems there is always someone mad at you. Thank you for what you do.

Oh, I knew you were joking...so was I!

I actually do not work in Nursing Admin any longer. I left the hospital and went into full time ministry several years ago.

...and thank-you for what you do!

I think travel nursing would be kind of neat. There are several people from the unit that I work in that have left to do nursing in all sorts of places. I think that I would like to do that later in life. Right now I'm just trying to get through school and work. Its going to be hectic this semester, all the other semseters I was able to work full time but I'm not so sure this time around.

The hardest part of my job right now for me, I think, is I work with a lot of people who arent really christians, so when a person comes in that is really bad off its pretty much assumed that that is the end of it and there is no hope. People are a little calloused and desensitized. They have seen so much and its hard for some of the people to stay hopeful. I was getting kind of down and out and upset seeing so many people die and so many families torn up, and a certain patient came in and I was able to be witness to a true amazing miracle. It lifted my spirits, it's still hard to be a light sometimes in a place like that.

I am a RN and right now I work in the ER. I do love it, though there are some times when I have to bite my tongue for the stupid people that come in and always for routine things--Saturday night we had a woman who called an ambulance becuase of dizziness and chest pain. We were going to start the workup, when the woman said all she wanted was a work excuse because she had been off work because of that THREE DAYS AGO and that she wasn't feeling bad now, just wanted an excuse. It was already a busy night and it was all I could do to not slap her. The doctor gave it to her on the condition that he never see her in his ER again. But aside from those, I just love the fast pace and it is an adrenaline rush and I love to see a patient that was on the verge on death earlier get to a point where (sometimes it happens) they are talking and stable. The worst parts are working doubles. I work nights, but it is pushing things to extend my shift too long. When I am tired, my English abilities become impaired. I still have an accent even after all the time I've been in this country, but I do very well in English, but if I get fatigued, it's as if I move backwards in that ability, so I get a lot of "I'm sorry, can you please repeat that?"

Hi- starbucks
I'm happy that I don't do doubles. I too work noc's. I sometimes do extra shifts during the week.
Update: I'm hoping to travel to Washington state in the fall. Good pay, but a little intimidating.

I would love to do travel nursing, but the hard thing would be that my husband isn't willing to move and I wouldn't like to have long assignments where I would have to go long stretches without seeing him. We both decided against kids, so it is only the husband that is the only dilemma.

I always try to bust my butt no matter what for the patient, unless they don't want my help. I have seen those with very advanced cancer, where one might think--"Why are we even bothering with a full code?", but if the patient wants it, I will do it. However, I don't think desensitized is a bad thing. If you let every case get to you personally, you will literally go insane. I think you have to separate yourself somewhat--not be a robot, but not too involved.

Hi all you nurses! Just wanted to keep this thread alive and not let it go too far down the list.

I do telephone triage/nurse advice. Wow, we have been so busy lately. The calls have either been complicated or they've required several calls to complete. Sick children, post op bleeding, medication problems. I have been loving Beverly Lewis and Lori Wick's books and have not had much time to read between calls the last few times I have worked.

Are you all noticing an increase in your patient loads or severity of their cases?

i'm not a nurse but i really want to thank all you who are for what you do. my mom is a cardiovascular nurse and growing up i was always brought to her work so i grew up seeing some of what nurses do and i have a strong appreciation for you all. one time driving down dallas,tx a car with a mother and daughter flipped upside down. i remeber this wheni was 8. i saw the daughter's face caked with blood. my mom pulled over to see if she could help but the chopper came. she also saved a man's life on a plane by doing cpr. she got a nice bottle of wine too but she went for 13 yrs to learn how to nurse and she shared stories with my of some of her training. i pass out at the sight of blood and guts. not everyone can do what you can so thank you all! you're all heros and again last time.... i appreciate ya'll!

It's the summer, a lot more people out and about to get hurt and a lot more things to do to get hurt!!! We have been just absolutely slammed here. Lots and lots of motorcycle crashes, car crashes, suicide attempts, cause they're all feeling good enough to do it now, and bike wrecks, and lots of falls off of high things. People seem to think that if it's high and dangerous its something to be climbed and then fall off of it... Lots of intoxicated people falling or driving their cars into things lately too. It's for sure been so so busy here, but thats just the summer for you.

I remember the moment I realized I was supposed to be a nurse, my mom and brother and I were headed to church one morning and had just pulled off of the highway into mc donalds. We came around the corner and my mom giggled and said look at that car! It was all crumpled in the front with smoke coming out of it. We got around to the side of the car and this guy was sitting half out of the car with blood on his face, he had just been in a car wreck and was motioning for help. My mom was a disabled paramedic and locked the doors and drove away. I am still "haunted" by this, but the feelings that I had at that moment made me realize that I was supposed to be a nurse.

The Lord changed my direction in college dramatically. I was going to be a teacher. Then my mom fell and shattered her right femur. She was in traction in the hospital for 2 months then came home in a wheelchair kind of traction for another 2 months. I quit school and stayed home to take care of her. When she was back on her feet, I realized if I could handle her bedpans, I could handle anything. I began prerequisites the next fall for the nursing program at the community college. That was 27 years ago. I haven't regretted it one bit. I feel that nursing completes who I am.

We all just worked 12 hour shifts, and we don't want to do anymore charting.

I need a caffeine drip.

There are several very nice forums specific to nurses. Has anybody tried them?

No. I'm not sure I want to. When I'm off, I want to be off, not talking about my job.

My suggestion, Rename thread Nurses Support and run it as you would any other subject in the category, following the same close the discussion after 100 pages. Someone would then have to be responsible for either resurrecting the topic, or starting a new one along same subject line.

Hi. I was looking at the subtitle of this forms in College thinking I am a little bit older than the normal college student than I looked and saw there was something about nurses. I thought maybe I could give a little cents into it.
I am a certified nurse assistant, I kind of find that difficult I have not done much with it and most of the entry level jobs are in nursing homes. I have a little problem with them. I think they are more like stockyards they are very depressing its sad to see most people in them have to live their life in futility. One the ironies most hospitals want experience from a long-term care facility its really a bummer most people would work in a nursing home just to make a step to something better. They look like they should step on a preverbal banana peel to cross over to the other side. I am sure people are saying to themselves this guy is going to become a nurse keep me away from him. I love trauma, really I should have tried to get my EMT than Paramedic I would love it to see people at their worsts and try to stabilized them.

The above paragraph is not what I really wanted to say. I am going to be starting a nursing program at a college in the denver area. I was wondering if someone could give me a little insight what I might expect.

Hello saved_
Its been awhile but I remember just jumping in with both feet. It is good that you have some medical experience - that will help you. Be prepared to do alot of reading! I think a lot of programs require entrance exams also. So you may need to do some basic prep prior to taking that exam. I knew that my weakness was in math so I went to the library and checked out GED texts.
Good Luck.

This is great to see a thread like this! I myself am not a nurse but my fiance is. She works with cancer patients here in Seattle. I know it takes a lot of patience to do what you do. I really have a special respect for nurses. I have heard many stories since she was in ER and she did triage as well. I like how I always have something wrong with me and she always can fix it. Its so funny its like we have a live in LPN/MA. We both have kids and if anyone gets hurt she is on it STAT. lol Nothing even grosses her out! You medical professionals are amazing! Thank you so much for all the work you do. Just one question do you have a hard time going to the ER when you are hurt? Or seeing a Dr when something is wrong with you?

Hi Menu4evr
As far as going to the M.D. -- I usually don't tell people that I am a Nurse!
I get the same experience that everyone else does-(in the beginning anyway) so I have some of the same complaints about healthcare that I hear other people talk about!

Cool tread.

Kat_D, you made me laugh out loud with your "want to pull a double".

I haven't worked for a number of years, but I still miss it sometimes. I was an RN and worked the step down unit mostly. One thing I liked to do was pray for my patents while I washed they're feet.
