In one church I went to they taught woman should wear dresses because slacks and jeans are men clothing.

The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so [are] abomination unto the LORD thy God. Deuteronomy 22:6


I am not sure about woman wearing a mini skirt and a top that showed off her breast is the right thing to wear to church.

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; 1 Timothy 2:9

Why wear something as a believer that would cause a man to sin by looking at you could make them stumble?

You are wrong. I wore coat and ties to church much of my life because I was taught it showed respect to God. It was the traditional mindset - people put on their best for the King in His house of worship. I no longer think that way, but insecurity had nothing to do with a sincere desire to give of our best to the Master, an attitude that doesn't seem to have any place in people's minds today in any area of life.

that's something that we could discuss until the "end of time"....

what defines something that "would cause a man to sin"? and "make them stumble"?

for many women in our church, their mere PRESENCE (regardless of what they are wearing), can make a man "stumble"!!!!

on a hot 110 degree texas summer day, women at church wear sundresses and that sort of thing....if that causes a man to "stumble", then whose at fault? perhaps the man would be?

trouble is: there IS NO set "biblical" definition on what is "appropriate" and what is not......a woman could be getting dressed for church, and think "this is PERFECT for church....and certainly "modest" enough"....and, then upon arriving at church, have more than a few people thinking "She wore THAT? how dare she!".....

perhaps the women should just wear burqas JUST to be safe from any "wrong doing"....or, just follow the FLDS "dress code" when it comes to women's clothes....

Even with that, my pants are all made for women. They've never pertaineth'ed to a man nor were meant for a man. And when I wear them, you can still tell I'm female.

BUT... there are plenty of threads about this, so I won't get into it here.

In a perfect world (or at least an innocent one), yes, absolutely. Adam and Eve had the right idea; clothes didn't enter the scene until sin did.
But, of course, sin is still around and present in our lives. Whether it be sexual temptation, or self-esteem, or what-have-you, going in the nude is not a viable option in this life.

Some misunderstand, in my opinion, the Scripture which says that a man's head should not be covered but a woman's should, and they apply this (wrongly, in my opinion) to coverings instead of to hair. My opinion, however, is that if you were in a church in which the ordinary/accepted tradition is that males remove their hats, you should, without rancor or questioning , remove your hat, unless it is a kepah or yarmulka. It looks like you did. If you disagree with their tradition, you should remove your hat in respect to their tradition or you should not return.

I am bling, bling. I like to wear very nice clothes Sunday mornings. I wear pantsuits, slacks, dressess, skirts, so on. My girls wear jeans usually, all the kids do. I wear capris on Wed. Sometime jeans on Sunday night I teach children. I always like to look nice, sorry that is me, I dress nice most of the time. I am wearing shorts right now, something I have not done in years, and would not leave the house with them on. My husband said " I love you in shorts." My DD said" mom, you have great legs wear shorts more often." No, not to church especially, sometimes my girls do, but I would never. The funny thing is my elderly mom and dad do wear shorts to evening service, they go to a different church. My husband would like me to wear shorts to church events, like picnics and such. No. I will not. Capris, yes, never shorts. I know this sounds snobby, and I do not care what anyone else wears at all. I am just bling like I said. A flashy woman if you will.

Fancy attire serves one purpose, and that's merely for a visual effect. My pastor met with the worship team and informed them they had to start dressing up because they were seen by the congregation on a regular basis. He thought they should look nice, not over-the-top, but nice.

For visitors, it sends a positive message that the church presents itself well. At least, that's the thinking of the church.

I'll put on a button-up shirt, jeans, and my regular shoes for Sunday mornings. It's no big deal because I would wear something similar on a date. It's about having the appearance of looking nice. That's it. Sunday nights I'll wear flip-flops and whatever. Whatever allows me to be me.

God could care less about external appearance. Yes, it's good to look nice, but it shouldn't overwrite the purpose of why we're in church.

At my old church they don't believe in women wearing pants. I don't think they'd tell you it's a sin, but they put it up on that level. They have an affiliated school (I was born into the church and stayed until I was 18 yrs.; went to the school from 6-18 yrs). Many of the people in the church worked in the school, and the principal was a long time church member. They didn't believe in women wearing pants period. So both the church and school were this way (the leadership in the church was the leadership of the school). They'll definitely make you feel like you're sinning if you don't wear a skirt that's long. So much so that I really think they've ostracized some women in the past, which made them want to leave (and they did).

I usually wear some dressy pants or a skirt at my current church. They're not strict on that, as long as you're not indecent. :)

I just answered this question a few days ago, but I think it was at another site. I apologize if I'm just losing my mind.

I dress casually. When I'm dressed up I feel like I'm being "fake," if that makes sense. Six days a week I'm a casual dresser, so on Sundays I'm not about to dress up and pretend to be someone I'm not. I only dress up when I feel I have to, which is very rarely.

This is also the way that my church is, and I agree with your comment whole heartedly! And as much as I hate to say it, I don't think I would be as passionate about going to church if I was required to dress in a more formal way. When my mother and her ex-husband used to take me to church it was always a whole big to-do and you had to look a certain way. I felt completely shunned and it was one of the many reasons that I didn't feel accepted and eventually fell away from God. I'm not saying that you should choose to accept God just because of your church, but I'm saying that if you can find a church that you LOVE going to...it can really put a fire in your soul that was lacking before and I know this first hand. Now, even if we had to stop going to our church and find a new one...I would be much more passionate and ready to praise because the one I'm at now inspired me and made me realize that you don't have to look a certain way or judge others to be a Christian.

If you were asked to meet with the president at some whitehouse function you would dress to the nines, but for God you give him flip-flops, jeans and hawaiian shirts. Ya, thats class, way to go church. Please dont answer me about God only caring about whats on the inside, do you put as much thought about how you dress going to church as you do going to 7-11. Too many "christians" these days give The Creator of everything no more respect than they do to the clerk behind the counter. Giving God our best dosent make us better or more spiritual, it's just a matter of respect. If you dont own, or cant afford a suit and tie, or nice dress im not down on those who dont, but give him the best you have.

I explained in post #91 why I wear what I wear to church.

If my soon-to-be-ex ever sends my clothes, I'll probably dress nicer for church. I'm glad no one is worried about what I'm wearing.

(Hey, I might even wear a denim dress or skirt that I own! )

As believers, it can swing both ways. The point is to have respect for the Lord, and whatever one does, they do onto the Lord too. If there conscious doesn't condemn one then it is ok to dress, but if it does, then it isn't instead.
