ORIGINAL: TammyIsBlessed According to the link CSL7037 gave, I have a daily expenditure of 2185 calories per day. That doesn't include calories necessary for nursing though - which I think is 500? So that's 2685 per day. I really don't think I'm eating 2685 calories per day! I'm confused because I don't see how it came to 2185! That doesn't seem possible at all!! I had to think about this more. And I'm certainly no expert! But I'm assuming you got 2185 from the BMR Formula: BMR = 655 + [9.6 x (pounds/2.2)]+[1.7 x (2.54 x inches)]-(4.7 x age) I plugged in a weight of 135, height of 5'6", age of 30 (just trying to assume or average height and age) and got 1371. I really think, to account for that extra 500 calories/day they say is expended nursing, it would put you in a "High" activity level (at the very most) which would say to multiply that BMR by 1.8. That is more like an extra 1000 calories cushiion and brings it to 2468. It's from that, that you'd subtract 20% to get a goal of 1974/day. Does that sound better? I got 1366. According to the activity level it said I was moderate and to x by 1.6 which is 2185. Nursing would not be included in those numbers and would be added on top. But that's to maintain weight, not to lose.

My husband is one of those freaks of nature who can eat a bazillion calories a day and not gain weight. So is mine, and he can LOSE weight while eating heaps of junk and 3 or 4x the calories that I eat. But he is conscious of fitness and really doesn't eat that much junk. He runs and lifts when he has the time and we're both committing to getting back to it after this move. quote:
I truly appreciate having a husband that will tell me that yes, those jeans *DO* make my butt look fatter Paul knows what my goals are and pushes me to reach them, and doesn't hesitate to tell me if he thinks I'm not giving it my best (again, with love!) So does Micah and I do appreciate it, especially when I need that little bit of extra motivation. I had been complaining about my weight after I had Gabby and instead of just telling me I looked good he said "well, I love you however you look but why don't WE get in the gym and do some self-tailoring?". Well, last night we went to a work sponsored wine tasting for Micah's company and the food was SO good. I did eat it, and I didn't refrain but I hadn't had much else the rest of the day so I knew I had a TON of leeway in my calories. THIS is me the year we got married THIS is right after highschool I have about 25lbs before I reach that weight, but I want to be more toned and I know that my proportions(hips and bust) won't be the same as they were then.

ORIGINAL: PrincessDonna One thing I know I will need to change is drinking more water and if I drink soda, making it diet. I don't like diet soda, but I'm going to have to get over it if I want to still have soda. I don't drink much now...probably 3 20 oz of Pepsi a week, but I want to cut it all out. [/color] If you're not a fan of soda, just cut it out. Don't even bother switching to diet, IMO. This from a true Diet Coke Addict! I can hear someone pop open a can and I WANT it! Sounds silly but I'm not exaggerating. About two months ago, I went cold turkey. I can't let myself even have one - if I do, I'll have six! Just save yourself; don't even go there. I also truly suspect that there's something addictive to the sweeteners in Diet soda (esp diet coke), something that plain old fashioned sugar in regular sodas doesn't do to a body. It's an acquired taste you don't need to acquire...you might find yourself down the road struggling to kick it! Work up to 1 gallon+ of water/day. The nifty flavor packets are a big help but read those labels!! Some are so full of sugar and carbs, you would be better off with soda. Crystal Light isn't bad. Those packets usually say to add 16-20oz water but I use one packet per 2L or 80 oz! That's plenty of flavor to just make the massive amounts of water easier to take. Cheaper too since, even drinking 4-5L/day, I only use 2 packets/day.

But I am a fan of soda. I would drink it every day if I kept it in the house. Now I only have one when I'm out and about. There is no way on God's green earth that I can drink a gallon of water a day. Right now, being pregnant, my goal is 4 bottles...so 2 liters. That's doing GREAT for me. I'm sure when the weather gets hot, I'll increase that by one or two bottles, but a gallon is way out of the ballpark for my body.

Donna, can you get flavored seltzer water? I drank that alot when I stopped drinking Soda. It's really hard for me to find those flavored water packets since I don't "do" artificial sweeteners but there is a brand that has "True Lemon and True Orange" that are good in water.

I haven't found a flavored seltzer that I liked, and I stopped looking after a bit.

But that really only puts our numbers about 200 calories apart, I think. So taking the 20% from that would get to between 1974 & 2148/day. Maybe you could try a calorie/carb cycling plan fluctuating between those two or something like: Workout Days (up to 4x/week): 2148 calories at 33/33/33 with 179g Protein, 179g Carbs, and 26g Fat Off Days: 1974 calories at 40/40/20 with 197g protein, 197g carbs, and 44g fat There are different ways that could work, though.

You bring up a good point with the talk of C25K. Anyone doing that, especially this time of year, needs to just chug and don't stop! And you really can work up to a gallon - just try to get most of it relatively early in the day or you'll be up all night. A lot of what we think is hunger, is really just thirst, too.

Is it the stuff called "True Lemon" ? There are printable coupons online that you can print to get I think $1 off. I have a few coupons printed, but haven't yet bought the stuff.

ORIGINAL: christsstar And then it's a game. How much junk food can I put in front of you before you crack!!! I'm not dieting right now. I've made it to my goal weight, but I am trying to stick with my healthy eating habits and continue to work out and tone what i have. So while it wouldn't kill me to eat a donut, one donut today and another one tomorrow, and it wouldn't kill me to eat a candy bar this afternoon, and then McD's for dinner ....... it's a vicious cycle and I intend to not get back into it. Maintaining is harder than losing! Good for you for keeping it in perspective. Resist the donuts on the principal of the thing! You go girl! What I lack in willpower I can make up for in stubbornness. I wont eat bad things if I think somebody wants me to.

I've been at my goal weight for about 2 years now. Because I'm in the process of moving, I'm actually not working out as much as I would like and I think I'm losing muscle mass and not gaining fat. Therefore I'm actually losing pounds now. I need new clothes too. The side effect of weight loss that is frustrating. Everything is too big. My ultimate goal in life is to be able to get down this far again AFTER I have a kid. I think I had it easy when I decided to lose weight ... I wasn't battling pregnancy weight. So I want to keep this mentality up while pregnant (whenver that will be) and then kick it into overdrive after giving birth so I can stay where I am. I know a few women who are just teeny tiny after 4 and 5 kids. It's amazing for me to see how they can do it. I think their key is just eating the right things. Not using pregnancy as an excuse to eat whatever, and not using having a baby as an excuse to not work out. They find a way to go running or to get their workout in. I don't know how, but they do. Seriously. This one lady specifically has 4 kids (well, did when I knew her, don't go to that church anymore), homeschools them all and manages to feed them good, healthy foods, stick to their budget, take them to violin and cello and piano and dance and soccer and ...... And she still finds time to go run 3-5 miles a day. When I met her she was pregnant with #4. After he was born, she went right back to her size 4 figure and didn't skip a beat. Her husband tells a story of coming home to a house they just bought and seeing her painting the ceiling, breastfeeding and homeschool all at the same time. She's an amazing woman.

I haven't officially decided to "join" in the accountability here as I'm a little apprehensive about some that don't have as much to lose, etc. My goals are WAY out there and really seem unobtainable...although at one point I was halfway to my initial goal. I've now gained back half of what I lost though Like I said at the beginning, this is a place to encourage each other, and truly no number is too large. You don't need to share the number - lots of people haven't. But don't let the fact that some don't have as much to loose discourage you. May I be honest? *I* have issues with this & I would probably end up saying something stupid to the woman working her tail off to lose 10 pounds. My "attitude" just isn't quite right about that & I don't ever want someone to feel like I am attacking them when it's what they are doing that is driving me nuts! I'm not sure if that makes sense.... I am reading & gathering ideas though. Stacy (at least I think it was you)...what about wrapping various things in a tortilla or even making a pita pocket? Would those be too messy? You can pack them full of veggies and some lean cooked chicken with maybe some sauce (lt. ranch maybe?) to make a delicious grab and go lunch. I know Chipotle probably doesn't meet most health standards by any means...but...go check out one of their burritos & how they are wrapped. They are SO filling and don't necessarily have to be reheated to be yummy.

Ultimate Goal....To lose, tone and have abs with no fat on them (if possible). Plan......Video called hip hop abs(today), to continue walking & eat right. Timeline....By the end of this year When to start....I started January 2008 I've lost 15 lbs so far. While it's not a lot I'm thankful because it's been gradual and I'm keeping it off. I feel the longer I keep it off the longer it will stay off(if you know what I mean). Mini Goals...Work towards 5lbs each time. I have about 45lbs to lost. At first I said 50 now I've moved it up. So I think I want to add 10 more which moves me to the 45lbs. I get board so I like changing things up. I stopped losing with just walking and going to the gym twice a week. So I tried something else and now I've lost another 2lbs.

I think the angst between women who need to lose 10 v. 100 or between women who work or stay home, homeschool or public school, etc, etc, is a bigger issue that virtually none of us are really exempt from. From someone who's lost, I figure, 70+lbs (albeit that includes losing the same 10 three times which just makes me stupid), I would only encourage everyone, whether facing 20 extra or 100 extra to learn from the mistakes of those who've already done this the hard way and get it done a lot faster and with less frustration. (I suspect I'm also quite a bit older than most of you guys and also have the benefit of being 7 years out from the issues that come with having babies.) Again, I'm the one throwing around formulas and more info than anyone ever really wanted, I know. For me to make this work, I really have to obsess and pretty much stay on it. But what drives me more crazy than anything is to see people spinning their wheels, battling misconceptions, misinformation and outright nonsense that's out there making everyone confused and keeping people in a vicious cycle going nowhere. I think we all have a lot to learn and if we can be in it together we'll find success. No reason to weed through the minefields some of us already have trying to figure out what really works.

Some people can be downright cruel when you are trying to lose weight. They sit they & carry on about how good something tastes & try to tempt you w/ just a little bit. What are they thinking? Would they wave a beer in front of an alcoholic or a joint in front of a drug addict? Just like in the new coke commercial, "Wake up, people!!" kd

ORIGINAL: paulsbride Have any of you ladies found any magazines to be useful? Nope, but I've never tried any. I get Skating with my membership to the USFSA, but it's more newsy than applicable. quote:
ORIGINAL: paulsbride I was also wondering about those who are married, does your husband help or hinder your health and fitness goals? And how does he do that? Both. Exercise: He encourages my skating, weight lifting, and any other activity I want to do. I can't get him to walk/hike with me which is something I enjoy and would do more of if I wasn't alone. When I weight lift, he's right there with me spotting and loading up the barbell and dumbells for me. He doesn't help me skate at all, but he never complains about the money spent for equipment, freestyle ice, group classes, or private lessons. He even gave me my current skates and blades as a birthday present. Diet: He is trying to eat healthier, too, thanks to his 40th birthday. So, dinner time is easier. When we eat out, however, he likes to go places where I like to make poor choices or where the only options are poor. He also likes to bring more junk into the house than I like. He doesn't request me to get it, but everyonce in a while he'll go to the store himself and come back with real ice cream or Nutty Bars or something else I can't resist. Last time he bought trail mix, which I have no trouble ignoring... but I'm not always so lucky.
