Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins- with Martin Lawrence. 'did not expect to laugh but I laughed out loud in this movie. Most of the characters are memorable but Mo'nique's character was the funniest. The outtakes were also hilarious.

Rails and Ties- tissue movie with Kevin Bacon and Marcia Gay Harden. It's about a relationship with a couple and this boy who's Mom killed herself on the railroad track. The kid who played Davey...great young actor.

Child's Play.

Seriously, this movie is more funny than scary. Why? Because of how stupid they write the people. Seriously, who buys a creepy looking doll like that for their 6 year old son???

Watched Ultraviolet last night. It reminded me a lot of Aeon Flux.

The Bank Job - excellent story/movie. Could definitely have done without all the nudity though.

The Other Bolyn Girl - enjoyed it and seemed fairly accurate/historical

Amazing Grace - AWESOME movie!!!

Gemini

Synopsis: Meiji-era doctor discovers his long lost twin swapped identities with him, while being dumped at an abandoned well, thus fomenting the sort of lower-class rage that epitomizes this loosely-adapted Edokawa Rampo Gothic novel.

The movie felt like a punk version of a traditional Kabuki, Noh play (see the motif of shaved eyebrows, and wildly exaggerative, transient wear), or as some other website states, Merchant Ivory on acid! I can see why Shinya Tsukamoto's movie earned a boatload of awards in Japan!

Get Smart.
Lots of fun! I though it was great that he didn't try to imitate the original Maxwell Smart. And they did get to throw in some of the classic lines.

Goonies:

Haven't seen this one in ages! Still a favorite! My 6 y/o old loved it and she watched it again. It also had the Cyndi Lauper music video for the song "Good Enough" with all the wrestlers, I remember she was into the wrestlers....what a weird video LOL!

One of my perks of working at Blockbuster I get the new releases before they come out so I thought I would give u my thoughts about the new ones comeing out:

Life Before Her Eyes: Good Movie. It is about a mother who is in a school shooting as a teen.

My Sassy Girl: Really Suprised how good this movie was. A love story about a rich girl and a guy. Plus Elisha Cutfort is in it.

Lord of the Streets: Good Movie. It is about a couple of Cops in New Orleans after Katrina.

Also watched Grace is gone and was pleasently suprised how good it was.

In Bruges, the comedy was kind of dark, which was okay, but the language was over the top.

It's been a while, so here it goes...

Avalon (the Mamoro Oshii film)

It's basically a Japanese, cyberpunk/virtual reality film set in a Krystof Kieszlowski movie set. The story revolves around a star player of the titular VR game, in search of the simulated, heavenly resting place which looks a lot like modern day Warsaw, sans the rust-colored sepia tones throughout the movie. I think it's rather appropriate to have Oshii adapt his sci-fi sensibilities/philosophy in Poland, given the latter is world-renowned for having a strong, Catholic metaphysical tradition. At times I think the heroine of the movie reminds me of French New Wave actress Anna Karina, crossbred with latter-day French actress Anne Parillaud (of La Femme Nikita fame). The ambiance of the film even feels like a more CGI-oriented version of a Jan Svankmyer (sp?) movie!

Samurai Commando Mission 1549 (Sengoku Jietai 1549)

Total popcorn munching, running-on-brain-neutral fare, involving a Japanese Ground Self Defense Force expeditionary team to time travel back in time (during Feudal Japan's warring states period), to retrieve/investigate the whereabouts of the prior expedition, during some time-space experiment. The movie has its own ridiculous moments, complete with certain inconsistencies with a time-travel reality (i.e. how is it that a modern-day Japanese army can be overwhelmed by swords-and-spear-wielding samurais ) sort of reminiscent of an old-school, Godzilla/Ultraman flick! .

The Great Yokai War

Takashi Miike's foray into family film (or as close to it as permitted by Japanese standards ) seems to fly past over me, with the the heavy-reliance on CGI and make-up FX makes Yokai War a bit... too much for me to digest. In fact, it feels like an extravagant, 2 hour long Japanese commercial for whatever fast food/instant ramen of the moment!

Maybe I should jumpstart a thread, concerning if Miike is starting to steer further and further away from the gross-out, sexually perverse/ultra-violent fare that first made him an international sensation (this is the same Miike who once said that his coming of age films, Young Thugs: Harmony, Young Thugs: Nostalgia, is his personal favorite!).

Penelope- good movie but slow at times.
Faith of my fathers- John McCain's story- slow at times but gave me more reason to vote for him

Life is Beautiful

It's the Italian film that won at least one Oscar (I can't recall how many) back in 1998. It's a great movie despite having to read the subtitles.

I thought the subtitles added to it. And it was a brilliant film to sit down with my children as a discussion film.
