4x10 wouldn't be so bad. I've talked with nurses (and office workers) who prefer those shifts- once you're at work, you might as well stay for 2 extra hours and get an extra day off.

Well some of the automotive workers routinely put in 12 hour days at the plant . That is a long day.
I'd do the 4 x 10 but I can't at this job. But it would be a lot easier to schedule appointments during the week.

The first choice is closest. I have done the following:
1. Travel at 55 even on 65 roads. Let the rest of the traffic go aroud me. Since the 65 roads I travel are all 2 or 3 lanes each way, peopel can pass me.
2. Plan errands to minimize one-stop trips and unnecessary doubling back.
3. My friend and I are now using only vehicle to travel to her homestead property to camp. Currently we're using mine since I get slightly better mileae and have much better tires.
4. Use my Fred Meyer Mastercard to accumulate fuel points. Saving 15 cents a gallon makes it worth using.
With prices at $4.299 ($4.149 at Fred Meyer Aug. 29th) for regular, I do exercise some care. I live in Alaska, the state with very high prices. I'm just glad I don't live in the Bush where folks are paying $7-$8, maybe more, as the summer fuel barges arrive with fuel for he coming year.
One thing I don't do is ride the bus, even though as a municipal employee I can ride free. Why? It would take almost 90 minutes one way vs. 12-15 minutes by car. Why the difference? Tiem spent walking tot he nearest bus stop. Time spent while the bus makes lots of stops. Needing to catch an early bus in order to be sure to arrive at work on time. We have a fairly poor bus system in most parts of town.

I work 10.5 hours a day, 5 days a week and it is tiring, but you get used to it. Staying an extra 2.5 hours each day does help pay the bills. It is kind of frustrating staying at school helping kids with homework and projects when you really need to be at home taking care of your own kids, though.
Gas was $3.47 a gallon here last week, then went up to $3.69 overnight. I don't know if it was because of the hurricane or the holiday weekend or what, but it was disappointing to see it go up when it had been going down.

I'm surprised a school is paying you the overtime to do this! With the budget cuts around here that would NOT be happening. There is one teacher that runs a homework group after school one or two days a week but it is entirely volunteer on his part.

I work with the 21st Century afterschool program. It is paid for with a grant, and this is the last year for it at our school unless we get another grant. And it doesn't pay time and a half, but it is a couple dollars an hour more than I make during the school day. The parents pay some to have their kids go to the program, but it is on a sliding scale so some kids come for as little as $5 a week.

For our weekly gas price watch! I was afraid the huricane would send prices up again, but it went down. 3.65 I am so happy. I want to go get gas. :)

WE've been sitting at 3.49. It went up to 3.59 for about a day then went back down again

If recent trends keep up, regular should fall below $4.00 by mid-October (diesel is still high in $4.899 range). And that's in the state with the lowest motor fuel taxes in the nation, which have also been suspended for another 11 months, so we pay zero!

I am not driving as much. I have a car that was purchased new 14 months ago and now i have a little over 6000 miles on it. To further compound the gas issues here in South Carolina there are still gas stations that do not have any gas. The press and others claim that it is a result of the hurricane 2 weeks ago. Can you imagine if you were not driving in the 60's what it is like to either have to go to several gas stations just to find gas or wait in line for 3-4 hours just to fill up ? Well come to SC and you can see for yourself.

Actually, in the late 70's, very early 80's, I did this here in Calif.
Here, the gas prices are going down! We've watched the news, but haven't seen any price increase at all! Whew!

Gas prices are still right at $4 a gallon for regular and there are several stations that are out of gas.

New gas station has it 3.55. Don't know if that's a promo price but its still less than the 3.70 it was last week.

There are a lot of oil stocks that seem really cheap right now. My work prohibits me from making specific recommendations, but I will say that if you search for large oil companies, you can probably find a few that are paying in excess of 5% dividends.
If you use 25 gallons of gas a month like most Americans, you can have an oil company that pays 6% dividends give you a month of gas free every year with a $1450 investment. You can get a second month from a crude oil royalty trust yielding 9% dividends for $990. Me? I get about three months of free gas every year from oil dividends.
If you find an oil stock with a nice dividend, this might be an interesting time to put some money in. If gas prices go down to$2.50/gallon, your oil stocks will go down, but so will your energy costs. If gas prices go up, you'll get bigger dividends to help pay for them. Either way, you win.

LOL! I ride about 500 miles a month out here, so that translates into about ten gallons a month in the summer (I have no need for driving, but still enjoy being on two wheels). When I was a college student in IL, my car got 30 mpg and I drove it about 750 miles a month.
How do you manage 25 gallons a week? Don't tell me you own a hummer... :)
