I discovered a 'secret weapon' though for catching things like crickets and cockroaches - of which we have an abundance. I spray them with Dermoblast, which numbs them and I can easily and neatly pick them up in toilet paper (inches thick ) and then dispose of them in the toilet. I *HATE* the crunch when they get squished - so numbing them works for me!

Hmmmm, I can understand you not liking roaches <shudder> but what's the problem with crickets? Do yours bite or something? Ours don't and I have no problem picking them or grasshoppers up and putting them outside (even though I am squeamish about others bugs).

They don't bite. I just can't catch them any other way. Really, I only spray roaches, unless I misidentify a cricket Believe it or not I mix them up.

Maybe ours are more sedentary than yours! I can just pick ours up.

Rats, Maggie. I hope the van can be fixed with a minimum of fuss.

Nicole, VBS is Vacation Bible School. It's usually a week long, really fun Sunday School of sorts. Most are about 3 hours each day, with a big picnic or something at the end.

Maggie....Paul says that if the battery is bad it won't hold a charge...but it could also be the alternator not charging the battery. He said auto parts stores usually can tell you which it is pretty fast...they have a machine they can hook it up to and find out. He would start with testing the battery though...much cheaper to replace then the alternator

Jessica...I will have to remember that method!!!! Where I grew up bugs are HUGE. You know they say everything's bigger in TX, well for bugs they are correct!!!!

I use hairspray sometimes too, it freezes on them and they can't move their legs and stuff. Works great on spiders.

Thanks Ruth

I am about to start some baking, from scratch for the FIRST TIME EVER!!! I am making some honey crackles, which I have made before, some teething treats for Nathy and tomorrow I think I will make some biscuits (cookies) for me and Grace. MMMMMM. Would be so lovely to be doing this in my new kitchen with my new oven, oh well. Soon, hopefully!

I know he's a mechanic and I am only a mechanic's daughter, lol, but I would not do that. Basically because if the alternator killed the battery, and you replace the battery without testing the alternator, you may end up buying two batteries AND an alternator. So I would test both and hope it was the former. Really, though, a bad battery will not make a car die while running, in general.

I'm with Jennifer ... back when dd was first born, we were out of town visiting friends. Car died outta the blue. Managed to get it jumped and to a parts place for testing. They only tested the battery, and said it needed replacing, but that if they charged and jumped it, we could most likely make it home again. Well, that's what they did ... we made it two blocks. Ended up having it towed to a garage and they tested the alternator ... it was fried. Replaced that (at a cost of $400 plus an overnight stay in that city) ...

I'd say if the store can test both, then get both tested ... if the alternator comes up as problematic, get it replaced and then see if the battery holds the charge.

Hey all!

I unsubbed from this thread a couple of months ago because I was trying to scale down the amount of threads I was reading every day. Wanted to pop in to resub because I'm finding I need you ladies a lot these days! Here's what's going on.

We found out that part of our income will (more than likely) be cut in half this fall and I panicked and went and got a full time job. I worked all last week and a couple of days the week before. I've been so miserable. It's a second shift job and I've not been coping well with being away from my hubby and 3 year old daughter. I was a SAHM for two and a half years and we just don't do well apart from each other...especially in the evenings. I cry all the way to work, fight tears during my entire shift, cry all the way home and feel depressed to the point I was thinking of going to my doctor for anti-depressants.

I hurt my foot doing yard work this weekend (Praise The Lord!!!), so I stayed home tonight since it's still swelling and painful. Today I just decided this job has to go. As much as I've prayed and my hubby has prayed for this to get easier, it's not getting any easier and I just think if it's God's will for me to be there that He would give me peace...at least a little bit.

I'm going to tell my supervisor what's going on tomorrow and see if they even want me to work out a notice. They might not since I'm in training and not working on my own yet.

There...I feel lots better. Thank you all for listening.

Isn't it such amazing love that we have for our kids?

(((Christi))) I can not imagine having to go back to work and leaving Mary with another person, I absolutely can not imagine it! I pray that God will help you to sort things out financially and otherwise so that you can stay home with your family!

eta: I had to change my avatar, I think that is my favourite picture of Mary ever!!

Bugs - I always yell for Dh to come and kill it and when he gets there he says "man, leave the poor thing alone" and walks away. *shrug*

Rachel - pet llamas and snake wrangling - we are so the complete opposite of each other, I love it!

Maggie - I'm sorry! That is my worst nightmare, that my car will stop somewhere that I'm blocking everyone and they would all get mad at me. Hopefully you'll get the van fixed speedily and cheaply!

Christi - sorry to hear things were so hard. I think you're making a great decision, and I know that God will get you through this time. Great to see you back!

Chelsea - I love that photo. It makes me laugh everytime I see you on FB!

Nothing big going on here today. Cold is still around....I keep doing all these stupid things that make it linger Ah well. Yesterday, the baby I look after didn't cry at all!!! She can now walk on her own (if she has to) so she's not crying when I walk away now, praise the Lord! Made for a much easier day. Let's pray it wasn't a one time thing!

Chelsea, that picture is awesome!

Thank you Chelsea and Lexie for the encouragement. I knew you ladies in this thread would be a big help to me.

GB was in good hands (her daddy's ). The job was second shift and they let me come in whenever he got home so we didn't have to leave her with anybody else. I just couldn't bear being away from her.

Will be calling the lady in HR to tell her I don't intend to stay in an hour or so. It's making me a bit nervous and a lot excited!

Christi..I have so btdt with a job that gave me anxiety..I didn't even have kids yet!
I haven't worked (outside the home) since 2001 LOL
I know it must be tough to want to help, but know you need to be home. You're doing the right thing. If you are seriously sick at the thought of going to work...then you need to not go for sure!
Glad you're back! How's GB?

Sandy, thank you!

GB is great. She's been pretty whiny at night. Hubby said she would be playing or something and out of the blue moan and say "I want mommy". Last night when I called in, everything was very normal at home. That was wonderful! I don't think we'll have any transition period to get back to normal routine. She's a trooper!

Maggie- AutoZone and also Advance Auto both can do tests for you to see what it is (for free). Alternators are also *really easy* to fix, so if dh knows anybody from church with any car experience at all, they can probably tackle it in under two hours (including heading to the auto parts) and certainly under $100 (unless both battery and alternator are bad, then maybe a little over). My husband replaced our alternator and he had never seen it done before and the car worked great until we ditched it...

Rachel- you *touched* a snake I can see beating the tar out of it to keep it from the kids, but then the limp harmless thing could just lay there until a man came- I wash the skid mark underwear, therefore, I do not deal with creepy crawly things... and yep, I've done the bowl thing too!

Any news on Brian? I saw that he got hurt badly, but then didn't see an update after surgery... I am not praying for other people for awhile though- but I'll be happy to pass on requests- God is not on the same page as me right now. For Vivi, I prayed that she would have a wonderful birthday present (like opening her eyes, breathing better, etc.) and instead, she got a heavenly birthday party. I prayed that Donna would get some unexpected help this week with the whole meal/grocery thing- Brian gets injured and now they have meals and childcare... not.what.I.meant. Our Sunday School is starting a new study on Romans next week, so that will probably help... Right now I am restricting prayers to good nights sleep and peace- very specific things...

Alright... I need to go get that last load of laundry in so that if dh can come home I can make it to Vivi's funeral this morning. I really hope he can come home, I would feel terrible if I missed it, but babysitting other's kids really puts a wrench in things- If it were just my girls, I would just take them along and not think anything of it, but other people's kids at a child's funeral- or dropping them off at a friends while I get paid- just all around We'll see...

Jennifer, I posted in Donna's thread this morning. Brian is doing okay, the surgery went well, but he's very confused and uncooperative. Donna's been with him all the time, and her family is helping take care of the kids.

I could only touch a snake if my son's life depended on it, and even then, once it was dead I would leave it until hubby got home.

Jennifer, I hope everything works out for you attending the little girl's funeral.

We've had an interesting day so far. dH is taking the week off, and today we got out of the house early to do a 2 mile hike at a nearby park. dH wore Nathan with a aluminum-frame carrier, but even before 10am it was still nasty-hot.

Then dH dropped me off at home and took Nathan to the mall. I took a 30min break to recoup from the hike, then popped in the Top Gun soundtrack to do chores without Nathan around. The music ended, and I am breaking for lunch before tackling the bathrooms.
