David Crowder's "Praise Habit..." book. His quirkiness really came out when explaining the psalms.
Louie Giglio's "i am not but i know I AM." Timeless message about how HUGE God is, and how tiny we really are.
John & Staci Eldredge's "Captivating." An important book that every woman should probably check out.
Karen Kingsbury... anything she writes, I'll pick up and spend time reading. She's such a good author.

Ray Comfort's "Way of the Master" is one of my favorites. It reminds me of the true purpose of the gospel, to save us from not only sin, but damnation.
William Wilberforce's "Real Christianity" also ranks up there. Although written in the early 19th Century, he exposed the hypocrisy of many supposed Christians and the dangers of incorporating New Age gimmickry into our beliefs. The book also helped end the slave trade.
C.S. Lewis's "Mere Christianity" is also very influential. It is one of the very first Christian books I ever read.
DC Talk's "Jesus Freaks" reminds me of the great sacrifice made by people of our faith.

I've heard good things about that book, but never read it. Now I'm intrigued by how his quirkiness impacts his explanations. :)

I have listened to John Macarthur's audio sermons on the radio, and read some of his stuff. MUCH of his teaching is good solid stuff, but I disagree with his teachings on the gifts of the Spirit (he is a cessationist) and his teaching on the end times (way out there!). But like with all preachers, you 'eat the meat and spit out the bones' so to speak!

I am confused on your thinking about Macarthur. I have all of his commentarys and books and his study Bible, and I have NEVER read anything that isn't backed up by scripture. I would loce some clarrification. Thanks.

William Blake -Mostly because I find his theology fascinating and I like his anti-fundamentalist streak. Whenever I get frustrated with the people on this forum I read Blake. Plus he constructs an entire theological system via poetry. This system is often very dense and difficult to read at first (it's kind of like speaking a different language as he has a massive cast of characters, all who stand in for various reified psychological actions, but all of whom represent different things within the context of different characters, so it's an ever moving, and changing system), but if you stick with it, he's quite fun once you get the hang of his language.

Most of his theology is pretty sound. However, because he is a dispensationalist - that means he doesn't believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, healing, prophecy, etc. - when you are reading through or listening to his stuff, you have to disregard much of his commentating on Acts, 1 Corinthians 12-24, etc. Also, I don't agree with a lot of his eschatology (teaching on the end times). But other than that, his verse by verse teaching of the Scriptures is very good!

I am an artist/art teacher and I love his (Blake) artwork. I have read a good bit about him, he was an interesting character. He said he could see angels and talked with them. I know he was a professed Christian, but I do not know anything about his doctrinal standings.

I'm getting some good ideas here! Someone mentioned Christian chick lit. That sounds fun :)
I'm in the middle of reading Jan Karon's Mitford series. Have #1 & #2 done.

Anne Graham Lotz. She has such a deep understanding of the Bible and a inspirational way of explaining and encouraging. If she were a man, she could take her Dad's place for sure.

Max Lucado.
I don't like Christian authors because sometimes they tend to make things kind of boring. That's just me. But Max Lucado's writing just captures me. I have a devotional book by him and I've read it so many times. He really is an amazing writer and I just love his words. (:

Very funny. Here is one my favorite stories about Spurgeoun.
He was riding along a country road in his buggy, when he realized he hadn't suffered any persecution for a few days. So he promptly stopped the buggy, got out, and began repenting. Right then, a farmer working his field noticed Spurgeon and said, "There's that preacher!" The farmer started throwing rocks at Spurgeon, who jumped up and said, "Thank you, Lord!"
His writings and sermons reflect his devotion to God. I really enjoy them.

Patricia Hickman is my new favey author. I'm reading her book Painted Dresses and I'm loving it. I took a writing seminar with her this past weekend and Wowsee!!! Did she ever blow my mind away!!! She is a writing genius and is changing the face of Christian writing. So now she's my favey author as well as my new mentor. I learned so much, I'm rewriting my novel. If you're a writer and see Patty is teaching somewhere near you, then you MUST go to her classes. They're worth it.
I also like CRosswalks own Virginia Smith's Just as I am.
