I sing and play guitar in the worship band. Right now I'm the most contemporary one in it. Joe and Sandra are the southern gospel hymn type people, but me, I just wanna rock! I love doing what I do. I take it very seriously.

I definately get the introspective singing. I typically sing loudly, even though I'm not a good singer. However, I feel like some of my closest moments of worship to God are the times I'm singing on the inside. Music is the way to my heart, and man, I'm absolutely sure that God knows that my most sincere moments are in worship through song. My Church typically plays heavier music on Sunday's, but they slow it down for a few songs as well. I find that the constant change of pace makes worshipping much more meaningful for me.

I do because I love to sing, but some of the music is so out of my vocal range it actually hurts to sing it. Lucy

If you want to sing but don't have a good voice sing and let God hear it and maybe he might over time tune you up! A choir director at my school once said, "If God gave you a bad singing voice throw it back at him!" Another way to improve your singing is to join the choir. We had a great choir director who worked with the people who weren't the best singers and he lifted us as a group to a whole new level! I guess there's a caveat to that in that you need to have a choir director who won't make you audition for your spot on the choir. Sometimes choir members can be prima donnas too!

I sing all the time in church during worship, it's an immense experience, although sometimes I can get really loud so I feel I have to real it in so I don't feel like I'm trying to show off or something. I've been told I have a nice voice and I like to think so as well, I just don't want a big head. lol.

You're there, so even if you don't enjoy it, that's not the point, so suck it up and belt it out like some half-mutilated cow on steroids. I do not have what you call a "singing voice." I would have to disagree with you there... if you dont enjoy doing something you should not do it because you feel like its your duty... if you are doing it only because you feel it is your duty it is not really worship... just my opinion

I am a songwriter and I sometimes perform songs as special music, and I also was a worship leader for a number of years. Naturally, I am very shy, but I believe if God is calling you to do something, He will give you strength to do it! So I trust Him and He always gets me through it. My goal is to bring glory to HIM!

I'm not familiar with many of the songs in some of the churches so it's hard for me to know what key to sing in, what the beat is, etc. Church shopping? You looking to buy a church?

I will give a few reasons... #1. My voice is terrible! I realize that this doesn't matter to some people, but it does effect quite a few people personally. I do not sing in public...ever. Regardless of the song, regardless of the scenario, regardless of the environment, singing in public is out of the question for me personally. There are some people who choose to sing in public, but not to sing in church. I frown upon these people because it seems hypocritical to me. But, that's my opinion. And, regardless of my opinion, it's God's opinion that matters, it's his opinion that truly holds any water as far as that matter is concerned. Many people are self conscious about their voice. To me, saying that you must sing to "prove" your love to God, or to show your enthusiasm or "want" to worship him, is like saying that prayers made mentally rather than vocally don't count; nothing could be further from the truth. #2. The genre of music. I understand this gets to quite a few other people as well. I love music...absolutely love it. I could name over 500 bands that I love, and then could name another 500. Let me put it this way: music is very important to me personally, and the type of music is as well. I listen to many different genres, but generally, I listen to Rock, Metal, and some Techno, but Techno has no place in this discussion, in my opinion. But, I digress. Many people don't enjoy acoustic guitars, or pianos, or choir music. Every person enjoys different types of music; vocally and instrumentally. The problem that arises with many people is that they are told "this is Christian music," and they are looked down upon if they don't show their enthusiasm for the music. Why is it that I'm not "putting my all into it for God," or that I "don't love God," if I don't enjoy the genre that another person or group of people have chosen for me? I'll give you an example. One of my favorite bands is Demon Hunter. They're a mix of Rock, Metal, and Metalcore; very heavy for a Christian band. There's a lot of screaming taking place, a lot is taking place instrumentally. I doubt many of my fellow Christians would enjoy being told that they're not showing their emotion because they don't enjoy heavy metal. The examples of this that I could give you are almost endless. Anyway, I hope that I've given some food for thought on this issue.

I don't sing anymore because I was told that it drew attention away from the p&w team. I used to sing professionally, took voice for many years...I auditioned for the p&w team twice, both times not asked to join...found out later that the leader didn't like that I had been a performer (local stuff...but got paid, musician's guild member). He thought that I'd want to take over. So...I keep my mouth shut now and save the singing for my children, my home, my car and my friends... Umm...reason #546,783 that I don't really like churches anyway. NDY

I do sing if it's songs that I'm familar with. If I'm not familar with the song, then I generally don't sing because I'm trying to focus on the words and what they mean.

If they think it's about the worship team, then they need to re-think. The time of praise and worship in church is for just that, praising and worshiping our God. Not the worship team. If I were you I'd tell that person (those people?) to get their mind(s) where they should be, then I'd belt out those songs as loud as I could.

Well, I must admit that I agree with Uncabeeil; egoism has no place in church! I have seen egoism single-handedly destroy a church. It's not a very healthy Christian environment. If God gave you vocal potential that matches that of the song bird, then you should feel free to utilize your vocal skill. Anyone, regardless of their voice should not be told "your voice stands out too much" whether it be standing out with beauty or standing out with horridness (for the sake of example). That's just my opinion, though.

If God gave you a gift and ability to praise Him through song then you should be able to participate and share that gift. Could you not join the PW team and compliment each other by combining your voices together and remember why you are there in the same place and hopefully for the same reasons. There shouldn't be dissension in a church family because that's what a church needs to be a family of God.

The instance I was talking about was when I was in the congregation, and just "let it loose". So...seeing as how I don't need more complications and strife in my life (I have more than enough of that at home), I just let it go...IF HE decides there is a place for me, then I will go...until then... NDY At my church we have people with all kinds of vocal range - good and bad, but we know why we sing and who it's for and we accept each other as is. We as a church are the body and each of us as individuals have parts to that body that fulfill a specific need.God knows what those needs are and He gave each of us a gift to meet those needs. It's terrible that church made you feel that you were not a part of them and more or less influenced your decision to leave. I will pray that there will come a day when you will find a church with a family that will embrace you and your gift. Your right in that if you trust and continue to seek He will find that special place for you. Don't give up. Pray for those who belong to that church that their eyes will be opened and realize that people shouldn't be walking out of a family, they need to bring people in.
