I do not get buying a $500,000 house 4 years ago and now being all boo-hoo that you had PLANNED on selling that for a $250,000 profit 2 years later but now the market has tanked and you're stuck with a $500,000 mortgage and the new neighbor down the block just bought YOUR SAME HOUSE for $285,000. You know what? THAT'S ON YOU, buddy. THAT is on YOU. Your greeeeeed took over. Remember the "We'll sell in 2 years for $250,000 more than we paid for it?" Yeah, see, THAT RIGHT THERE is why you are in trouble, why you are whining. If you can't afford your house, go get another job, work nights, sell a car, start walking. I so get what you're saying here Jeanie. We have put off buying our own home by choice, choosing to rent until 1. We can afford to buy; and 2. the market drops. No. 2 is starting to happen but No. 1 just isn't quite there yet, so we will wait for the next dip in the market or when we can afford to take a hit with a higher market. We have a ten year old TV which is dying. It needs replacing, but I don't see any reason to do that until it is actually dead. It's the same shows on my dying, 10yo television as it would be on a brand new, you beaut, widescreen which cost $4000. Kylie

most of the $4000 tv's are 52 inch ones. We just got a catalogue in the mail today LOL Hubby wants one, I said in his dreams!! He cant have a new bike, new shed and roller door AND a tv like that. We have a cheap tv we bought from Target 3 years ago, its 68 cm, its VERY huge and boxy at the back, I think it cost $299. We do need to get another one eventually as its starting to get a red line at the top of the tv and you have to have the volume on 29 to hear it , but we will wait til we have done everything else in the house before we get one. we don't have any credit cards. we only have our morgtage.

Our TV is a cheapo that we bought right after moving into this house. I think it has maybe a 19" screen- DH's computer monitor is almost as big (and he bought it himself with birthday gift money). The speakers seem to be dying, so we're on the lookout for someone we know getting a big screen tv and looking to get rid of theirs. We'd take yours, Crystal, but it would probably be too expensive to ship it. I too wonder how many people really pay attention to the price of gas. One of the ways DH and I amuse ourselves on the road is by looking for cars with more than one person in them. More than half the cars we see at any given time have only the driver. Oddly enough, smaller cars seem more likely to have an extra person than larger ones.

A lot of people don't care about the price of gas. Same here, almost all the SUVS and crossovers have one person in them. Small cars are selling here but I still see a lot of new luxury cars on the road, for all the complaining people do about the economy here, including that real ugly and expensive Ford Flex.

It seemed to me like people's driving habits changed briefly when gas was over $4. Fewer people flying past me on the freeway, more people in cars, etc. Now its back to normal again, although I do see a lot more motorcycles than I used to (or maybe I just notice them more now). Lots of commercials and ads for really big cars.

I drive an SUV (a tiny one that gets the same mileage as a car) and I don't go enough places to worry about gas.

It will just go back up again next summer so we'll see what happens. I wonder if people will ride their bikes next year that they all went and bought this year. LOL I only rode mine a few times but it will still be warm through part of october.

Dh keeps commenting that we are probably one of the only families around town who use the van to the maximum of its capabilities ... we have 5 kids and a double stroller -- van is full!

ORIGINAL: TwinCityGirl I cannot tell you the number of times someone that is a Christian has told me that if you don't vote, or if you don't vote for McCain this time -- you're voting for Obama. I am so sick of hearing that. "You're voting for Obama then". I guess there is some huge fear of Obama getting elected? I'm going to play the age card here. See, I've been voting in Presidential elections since before some of you were BORN. I am 42. So I have been voting since one week after my 18th birthday, and President Reagan was reelected that time. So I've been through the process AS A VOTER AND A TAXPAYER for 6 Presidential elections with this 2008 one being my 7th. This is not new to me. I don't really know much about Mrs. Palin but from what I have read (we don't own a TV) she seems okay. Of course this is a very calculated choice for McCain, and probably in a lot of ways a very good one for him. Yeah, he is going to turn some people off by picking 'a woman', but those people are not likely to abandon voting for him because he picked a female running mate and hop on board with Obama/Biden or a different party. (The old "Don't waste your vote" comes into play here.) People want to vote for "the winner". People get a big kick out of "picking someone who has a chance of winning". I don't get that. If you think the two major party candidates are people who you cannot, in good conscience, put your X next to -- then don't. Or write in someone. Or vote for a different party. With every fiber of my being I disagree with "picking someone who has a chance to win" if that is the SOLE reason you can back that person. And that is part of where my disillusionment with my fellow Americans comes into play right now. The constant goading of anyone who isn't for Obama or McCain (good grief, I guess you're horrible if you see another person more qualified than one of those two?). I am sick of selfish, greedy Americans driving around in their Suburban SUV's taking their 3 children to soccer practice in between pedicures, facial peels and "play dates" up to their eyeballs in consumer debt and looking for the next President to bail them out. I am sick of the lack of personal responsibility for their own household's choices. I am sick of seeing people hop into their gargantuan SUV (alone) and then lamenting on how expensive gas is these days. (Wha???) I am also really, really, nauseatingly SICK of hearing about the environment and "being green". You know what? I have been recycling for DECADES, I don't need a candidate or movie star to tell me to do it. I take care of the property the Lord has given my DH and me BECAUSE IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. Not because I am EVER going to "worship" "Mother Earth" like all these "go green, sew your own grocery bags" people. Go ahead and sew your own grocery bags -- why not? Why not save resources? Why not shut off the water while you brush your teeth? DO YOU REALLY NEED SOMEONE TO TELL YOU THIS? I know that is a sub-rant, but I am really sick of that message. The Earth is the Lord's, that is the SOLE REASON I take care of it. If you drive an SUV, fine. I could care less, but I don't want to see Mrs. Manicured Soccer Mom alone in it all day long and then bellyaching how expensive the gas is now that they've just gotten back from their credit-carded family cruise to the Disney island in the Bahamas. I do not get my peers, and if you're younger than me, I don't get your peers either. Get your nose out of a computer screen, your ear away from a Blackberry or --- gasp! -- anyone ever heard of NOT HAVING A CELL PHONE? There are plenty of people in this country who are in actual real NEED of help to stay housed, warm or cooled, clothed and FED. Those are the people we need to help. Those are the people the rest of us are happy to have our tax money help. People in real need. Not someone who overspent and whose greed plan has failed. Do I expect McCain or Obama to change ANY of this? Oh, heck no. I expect from McCain more and longer war, I expect from Obama almost no change except maybe more taxes. We'll continue to eradicate the middle class. And before I get slammed for this, let me just say I don't sit around blaming the President for every little ache and pain in society or for my own situation. We live in an expensive city. The bottom line is that my husband and I are responsible for what happens here. I think being the President of the United States is the worst job in the entire world. I cannot fathom why anybody would even want it. The day one of those two men (and yeah, it's going to be one of the two, we all know it) takes office they will be vilified by major portions of the entire WORLD, major parts of our own country even. I say we just pray for whoever gets elected and stop picking on everybody who just didn't want to participate in the whole schmear. I bet this post is super long. I'm sorry about that. I got a little uncorked. Jeanie I either don't get out much, live in a bubble or don't realize how fortunate I am to have acquaintances, friends (some family) who do not talk the way you are describing at all, Jeannie. I literally never hear anyone in my world complaining that the president should bail them out of their own messes. I never complain about it either to anyone else. Lucky me!!!

We aren't getting a small car for him until next year...so until then we will just pay more for gas in the van (though it does get great gas mileage for a van...better then some small cars)[/color] I know there are some people who do that (maybe more than I think?), but it seems like pretty much any time of day the majority of cars that I see only have one person in them. I'm glad you guys have a van that gets great mileage- both our cars do pretty well. One gets about 28mpg (more now with the AC out of commission for a while), and the other gets about 25mpg.

I have to admit, we are TV people. We have 3 tv's actually, one 52" and two 32". But we paid for them all outright (well, we put them on MC to get the airmiles, but we always pay it on time in full).

Sarah- no nothing on top, I think its just a cheap tv :) We only have one tv in the house, we will get a new one and use the old one in the family room I think. Cars- we have a sedan, its a Toyota which are good on fuel economy. We also have regular services and make sure the tyres are in good condition etc which all helps with the fuel consumption.

We have too many tvs but only one gets watched regularly. It was a big expense, but one we saved up for (we pay our cards off too, Tammy though for us we started doing that as a credit building thing so we could get a better mortgage rate - it worked ). I can't remember if it's 42" or 37". Whatever it is, it barely fits in our armoire, like it was made to go in there, and it's the perfect size for our room. Any bigger and I think I'd get headaches. You'll rarely see more than one person in Dustin's car (he drives a company car), but he can't really carpool since he drives around to different locations all the time and doesn't have regular office hours like most of the other people he works with. Sometimes his assistant is with him, but a lot of times they are in two completely different places. My vehicle usually just has one person in it too - me. Cause I'm just one person ( think...). Sometimes on the weekends you might see both of us, and maybe someday there will be a kid in there... but for now, just me and sometimes just the two of us. I suppose we could start picking up random people on the side of the road and call ourselves green.

Yeah, I can't carpool either, for the same reason. Its just me and my toys most of the time. I WISH I could drive a company car- complete with company credit card for gas. Granted, then I probably wouldn't get paid mileage, so it evens out (I think).

Yep, we used to make a killing in mileage before they switched him to a company car and gas card. Of course, that was back when gas was very cheap and he drove a tiny car that was really too small for him (one of the reasons we sprung for the truck).

well people are getting rid of their tvs here because there is a lot of confusion over the Digital TV conversion in 2009 They think all need to get high def but they don't. Anyway a lot of people are using it as an excuse to upgrade their tvs.

well people are getting rid of their tvs here because there is a lot of confusion over the Digital TV conversion in 2009 My dad bought a tv while in the US and the guy selling it was going on and on about the digital switch and stuff, really confusing and the whole time my dad is sitting there thinking "yeah but I live in Canada." Plus I thought you just can't use antennas anymore and do they still sell those? We have 3 tvs. We each had one when we moved in together and recently we were having problems with the sound on one. We lived through it for about a year, but then we saw a flat screen on for a really good price. We didn't bother getting rid of the other tv, Dh is using it to play video games. On gas...one thing that annoys me is people who complain about the prices of things today, or complain that they don't have enough money to make ends meet, and then they go and fill up their high mileage cars and drive places that they could have walked to or took the bus to. I know quite a few people like that now, who aren't taking the price of gas into consideration or changing their driving habits, but are always complaining that they have no money. We told one pair of friends that we weren't going to listen to them complain about it anymore. We offered them advice, they didn't take it, and we don't want to hear about it anymore.
