Mag-Not sure how it works, well everyone registers when they are 18 years of age. By the time you are 18 the government would have enough details about you through schooling, medical system etc that they would know that your name and date of birth isn't registered. You can read more about it HERE.
We have two major parties Labour and Liberal. I would say that most Christians would lean towards the Liberals as they tend to stand more for things like no gay marriage, abortion, stem cell, euthanasia etc. There is also a few minor parties the most popular being the Nationals (they are more like Liberals), The Greens (they are all about the environment and animals etc) and Family First (a Christian party, which is about families ).

I tend to vote for the lesser of two evils as the candidates I would have wholeheartedly supported were eliminated fairly early on during the campaigns.

If I vote, then I have nothing to complain about & I have some "sayso", even if it isn't as much as I would like (ie: if I voted for someone who held the exact same views as myself, but in reality that's very hard to find!).

I do know that it's less than half the population that comes out and votes though....

Due to my disablity, I vote absentee ballot. During one presidential election, I couldn't get anyone to help me fill out the ballot until after the deadline had passed. In essense, I was denied the right to vote. Since then, I've treasured the ability to vote!

I guess I find it hard to hear when people don't vote. We are very honoured that we are even allowed to vote! I think Australia may have been the first country to give women the vote if I remember back to my all girls high school I also look at places like Zimbabwe and other countries where people line up for days in order to vote, where you are persecuted. I don't think it should be taken for granted.

So do most Christian americans vote Republic?

A lot of conservative Evangelicals do, but certainly not all Christians, or even most I would say. To much more, I would not want to say, as this board is heavily Republican.

You can PM me about it, if you like.

I would not say they all vote republican, we are only registered as republican because "conservative" isn't an option. My beliefs do not necessarily align with that of the republican party so I wouldn't lump everyone together. The problem with registering "independent' is that is usually takes away your right to vote in a primary election, or caucus. But that even depends on the state.

Really, when people start lumping "republicans" and "democrats" that's usually a big sign that they don't know a ton about politics.

Ryanne, I'm well aware that many on this board lean more towards Libertarian or other 3rd party beliefs. But CW is heavily Republican in it's voting habits, whatever their personal beliefs are.

Can I ask, was that last statement directed at my post, or the idea of "Christian = Republicans" notion?

I don't take the ability to vote for granted at all. Not one bit. I'm extremely thankful that I live in a country where I can exercise my right to vote as well as my right to abstain, whatever I feel is right at the moment. I vote my conscience, what I feel directed to do, and this year I feel for me, that means not voting.

That doesn't take away my right to be upset and complain about the direction our country is headed. I've always found that a silly argument. Though I do usually save that for discussions with family and close friends. The best quote I've heard in a long time is that if voting really made a difference, it would be illegal... that pretty much sums up what I feel about the system as a whole these days. My husband served his country, I supported him in that. We love America, we just hate what it has become and know that no matter which of the two candidates get in, nothing will really change.

I think that's sad then Crystal that neither candidate can bring change like you would like. Maybe you should move to Canada or Australia?

Nope, not at you particularly. I'm sure we don't agree on everything, but you strike me as pretty educated on the "topics". I am just tired of people that lump all Christians into the Republican camp. I know it is because it's the majority and most people are uneducated but it's still annoying...

Crystal, did you vote or caucus for the primaries? And yes, we do have the right to vote or not vote

Very true. No matter who gets elected we can all rest assured that God is still in control

Although I must say, we are not total supporters of the two-party system either(although this country technically is NOT a two-party system...it just has two dominant parties) but we do still feel as though part of our duty as American's is to play a role in who does/doesn't get elected. Certainly not everyone is called to politics, as it really in many ways is like the missions field. Especially when you are serving behind the lines making sure people are eating and kids are getting to be kids.

I vote absentee, too, but for a very funny reason. One year, after the elections, the newspaper came out with a voting story, accompanied by a picture. The picture was of a voting booth, with someone in it...you could see the curtain, and then a large behind, and two legs. I don't have the skinniest rear myself, and I decided I wasn't ever going to risk someone getting a picture of MY big behind, in fact, at first, I thought the picture was of me, but I realized I didn't have boots like the person in the picture.

We vote via mail in ballot, it's so nice to have that option although I don't really agree with it I also don't agree with not requiring a photo ID at a polling place though.

"Technically" and reality in practice are two very different things.

Nicole, funny enough, my hubby has said we should move to Australia a few times now. I don't know about that... you guys have scary spiders!

(I'm hoping politics is an ok topic here)

Stacy:

I want to assure you it is fine to talk politics in here. I know that some people really dislike talking about politics (people in general, not necessarily here)....but if there are people here who don't want in on the discussion they can just avoid the talk here till we're on a new topic.

It is perfectly fine to discuss here and it's not a bad thing for Christian women to make each other think about political things.

Thanks for asking.

Um...I've seen some of the critters you've posted about on your blog.

I'll stay up north where things can't grow so big because we freeze 'em good in the winter.

I cannot tell you the number of times someone that is a Christian has told me that if you don't vote, or if you don't vote for McCain this time -- you're voting for Obama. I am so sick of hearing that. "You're voting for Obama then". I guess there is some huge fear of Obama getting elected?

I'm going to play the age card here.

See, I've been voting in Presidential elections since before some of you were BORN. I am 42. So I have been voting since one week after my 18th birthday, and President Reagan was reelected that time. So I've been through the process AS A VOTER AND A TAXPAYER for 6 Presidential elections with this 2008 one being my 7th. This is not new to me.

I don't really know much about Mrs. Palin but from what I have read (we don't own a TV) she seems okay. Of course this is a very calculated choice for McCain, and probably in a lot of ways a very good one for him. Yeah, he is going to turn some people off by picking 'a woman', but those people are not likely to abandon voting for him because he picked a female running mate and hop on board with Obama/Biden or a different party. (The old "Don't waste your vote" comes into play here.)

People want to vote for "the winner". People get a big kick out of "picking someone who has a chance of winning". I don't get that. If you think the two major party candidates are people who you cannot, in good conscience, put your X next to -- then don't. Or write in someone. Or vote for a different party. With every fiber of my being I disagree with "picking someone who has a chance to win" if that is the SOLE reason you can back that person.

And that is part of where my disillusionment with my fellow Americans comes into play right now. The constant goading of anyone who isn't for Obama or McCain (good grief, I guess you're horrible if you see another person more qualified than one of those two?). I am sick of selfish, greedy Americans driving around in their Suburban SUV's taking their 3 children to soccer practice in between pedicures, facial peels and "play dates" up to their eyeballs in consumer debt and looking for the next President to bail them out. I am sick of the lack of personal responsibility for their own household's choices. I am sick of seeing people hop into their gargantuan SUV (alone) and then lamenting on how expensive gas is these days. (Wha???)

I am also really, really, nauseatingly SICK of hearing about the environment and "being green". You know what? I have been recycling for DECADES, I don't need a candidate or movie star to tell me to do it. I take care of the property the Lord has given my DH and me BECAUSE IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. Not because I am EVER going to "worship" "Mother Earth" like all these "go green, sew your own grocery bags" people. Go ahead and sew your own grocery bags -- why not? Why not save resources? Why not shut off the water while you brush your teeth? DO YOU REALLY NEED SOMEONE TO TELL YOU THIS?

I know that is a sub-rant, but I am really sick of that message. The Earth is the Lord's, that is the SOLE REASON I take care of it.

If you drive an SUV, fine. I could care less, but I don't want to see Mrs. Manicured Soccer Mom alone in it all day long and then bellyaching how expensive the gas is now that they've just gotten back from their credit-carded family cruise to the Disney island in the Bahamas.

I do not get my peers, and if you're younger than me, I don't get your peers either. Get your nose out of a computer screen, your ear away from a Blackberry or --- gasp! -- anyone ever heard of NOT HAVING A CELL PHONE? I do not get buying a $500,000 house 4 years ago and now being all boo-hoo that you had PLANNED on selling that for a $250,000 profit 2 years later but now the market has tanked and you're stuck with a $500,000 mortgage and the new neighbor down the block just bought YOUR SAME HOUSE for $285,000.

You know what? THAT'S ON YOU, buddy. THAT is on YOU. Your greeeeeed took over. Remember the "We'll sell in 2 years for $250,000 more than we paid for it?" Yeah, see, THAT RIGHT THERE is why you are in trouble, why you are whining. If you can't afford your house, go get another job, work nights, sell a car, start walking.

There are plenty of people in this country who are in actual real NEED of help to stay housed, warm or cooled, clothed and FED. Those are the people we need to help. Those are the people the rest of us are happy to have our tax money help. People in real need. Not someone who overspent and whose greed plan has failed.

Do I expect McCain or Obama to change ANY of this? Oh, heck no. I expect from McCain more and longer war, I expect from Obama almost no change except maybe more taxes. We'll continue to eradicate the middle class.

And before I get slammed for this, let me just say I don't sit around blaming the President for every little ache and pain in society or for my own situation. We live in an expensive city.

The bottom line is that my husband and I are responsible for what happens here.

I think being the President of the United States is the worst job in the entire world. I cannot fathom why anybody would even want it. The day one of those two men (and yeah, it's going to be one of the two, we all know it) takes office they will be vilified by major portions of the entire WORLD, major parts of our own country even. I say we just pray for whoever gets elected and stop picking on everybody who just didn't want to participate in the whole schmear.

I bet this post is super long. I'm sorry about that. I got a little uncorked.

Jeanie

I just saw a Discovery Channel show on the itty bitty Australian jellyfishes that just happen to be DEADLY- there goes my dream of swimming in the Barrier Reef.
We've lived in AZ for 4 years and have yet to see a scorpion, although I've heard they're very particular about where they live. We see lots of gecko lizards outside, but they're ok because they eat bugs. That and the cats dismember any that are unlucky enough to make their way inside.

Crystal- your opinion about sums up why I haven't voted up until now. I don't particularly like either candidate this time around either. Dh thinks its amusing that its a VICE presidential candidate who has gotten me to even consider voting.

Sure, a few critters might be big and creepy, but they certainly don't kill.

My dad (who has always been extremely patriotic/Republican/support the troops/outspoken about political stuff/anti-liberal/crazy angry white conservative male (in his own words)/blahblahblah has been so sick of the process himself this election, which to me says a lot. He told me today that he's sort of getting a little excited about it now.

Interesting.

Still not voting, and I stand by that personal conviction.

Yes! UGH! I live in Manitoba, Canada. We have snow for six months of the year and I thought we had only little spiders here. For the first time in my 52 years (and I've lived here for all but 2 years), I saw a wolf spider caught at a favourite camp I go to. UGH! UGH! UGH! Generally speaking, however, our bugs are much smaller and tamer than further south, and we have no poisonous snakes in the Manitoba wilds. YAY!
