I always think it's silly for people to get offended by words without considering language or cultural differences first.
In university I dated an English guy and his best friend was Irish. We were out at a rather loud venue and the Irish guy asked me what time my class was the next day. I held up two fingers to tell him "2." Little did I know I was giving him the finger. But who would take offense to such a thing which if I was using their meaning, would be completely out of place?

Wow! Lexie! For years I worked with youth at church. When I wanted them to be quiet I would hold up two fingers. Who'da thunk I taught 'em the bird?

That's funny Roberta! Apparently it's only if you hold them a certain way (not like the peace sign the other way)...someone may be able to confirm or deny this.

Watched a brilliant Spooks last night, then flipped over and watched an even more brilliant Spooks (next weeks) on BEEB3! Met a friend for coffee this am and we both talked about it (though she didn't see next weeks, so I didn't spoil it for her, just said it was brilliant...

That's interesting that you'd say that. I may have to check into labor laws in the UK. That is generally one of the bigger reasons people here give for not shopping at WM. A board generalization would be that liberals hate the place and conservatives love it.
Here, it's no big deal to drive 20 minutes to get groceries at all. Of course here, the traffic is so bad that it can take longer to drive somewhere than it does to walk it in some cases.

I've no idea! I would have thought it varied from company to company. But I'm not sure.
Both Dave and I have always worked for companies where your salary covered you for the hours on your contract, plus any other hours necessary to do what needs to be done. In other words, the salary is per month, not per so many hours.

Here some companies will pay you OT if you work over 8/hrs/day, even if you work less than 40/wk. The majority of companies only pay OT if you work over 40/hr/wk.
Many companies do pay sal. I'm not sure how their OT works. I know 1 company that I was sal for didn't pay OT but they gave you CT. That was a long time ago and I haven't heard of any other companies giving CT. CT was awesome!

I'm on salary but that salary covers about 5-60 hours a week. If I come in on a weekend, then I get comp time.

Robert is salaried. Sometimes he works 35 hours a week, sometimes he works 45 hours a week. He is salaried at 40 hours a week though, doesn't get paid OT. But more often than not, he is working at 40 or less than 40 hours a week.

Stina- he doesn't get any comp time?
I loved the comp time. I would get an average of 5 hours a week. I would tack that on to vac. It worked out nicely when the boss passed away and his wife took over and ran the company into the ground. I had two weeks vacation and somewhere near 70 hours comp coming. I tacked that onto my maternity leave and never went back. It was a great company until the wife took over.

I dunno what comp times is.....I don't think he gets it. He gets 1 week paid vaca and that's all. If he's sick, his boss doesn't take it as vaca.

Oh OK....nope he doesn't get that. In the winter, a lot of times he's home by 3 (or doesn't work at all because it's raining too hard or too windy), and in the spring/summer he ends up doing a lot of bee jobs on Saturdays, so it evens out pretty much to 40 hours.
It would probably be hard to be an exterminator in Britain because the weather is so unpredictable. We get a lot of rain, but we all know that it's pretty constant from October to May.

I've heard of it before, but I've never worked anywhere where you get it. I think my dad gets it, he has a gov't job, so he gets really good benefits, etc.

It's awesome! I prefer it to OT pay. Very, very few employers offer it anymore.

Ok British ladies, here's a question.
Do you get offended if there is a British person on an American show (reality type) and they put subtitles for everything the British person is saying?
We were watching House Hunters International today and they were in Scotland. There were quite a few things that were said by the estate agent as well as the house hunters that were subtitled, and yet were very easy to understand. Would that be offensive to you, or do you brush it off?
And do they subtitle Americans on your shows?
