It has to do with what one British judge's OPINION was on a certain matter, not what was made law by him.

My local water authority takes pleasure in advertising that there's been no water restricitons here since 1976! The weather is so different to what it was last year ~ when some parts of the country probably had more than 11" in a 24 hour period, causing major flooding.

I read through the whole thread and the person who posted it, never bothered to explain their statement, even after asked. (Since I like to give folks the benefit of the doubt, maybe she hasn't gone back to the thread since then).
I try and give people the benefit of doubt, but sometimes it gets to me ~ generally when Americans claim that Christianity is dead in Britain and the rest of Europe. I have to wonder what that makes Manda, myself and others who post here.
So does anyone intend to watch the Olympics?

I object to it being held in China on principle, because of their appalling human rights's record. I may watch some of it, to see how many medals we don't win, but it won't be with great enthusiasm.

We have banned smoking here in Australia too in public places. Also if a parent is caught smoking in their car with their kids, they get a fine.
We are in a drought in Australia, I think its like 7 years running. Some kids have only seen rain once or twice in their lives!!!

Since I don't have cable, I only get to see old , and I mean old, British comedy shows. These are the ones I can see regularly & enjoy
Are You Being Served, it very silly & risque'.
As Time Goes By, is very funny.
Keeping Up Appearances, Patricia Routledge is wonderful. I've also seen her in drama.
Plus once a week I get Eastenders; From 5 years ago!!!

I didn't bring this up in the kicka thread, because I thought it would go better here.
To the non-Americans in this thread..... Thank you for not assuming that you know my stance on abortion, gun laws, homosexuality, racism, religious tolerance, socialized medical care, etc. based on the fact that I'm not only an American but that I also live in one of the most liberal areas in the nation. Now, if you've read my posts in those threads, I'm sure that you know where I stand. I do try very hard to not make an assumption about a person's beliefs base on their geographical location. I can imagine that on a predominately American board that there are times when you do not get the same courtesy extended back to you.

I think what I find frustrating is, I try really hard not to judge Americans all in one, but it's difficult when you're having them do the same thing to you. And being on a predominantly American board like this it is easy to fall into the trap or judging everyone as the same.
I know very few Americans in real life. I have a few American acquaintances through church who I've only met twice. I don't travel to the US. So my only understanding of Americans really is from this board. And I'm sorry but some of the people posting on here and the things they post about, don't make Americans look that smart 
I don't even bother getting into discussions on socialised medical care on these forums. I figure, let the people who know absolutely nothing about the system, except for what they read in one small media source, discuss the evils of it. As someone who has nothing but positive experiences in it, I will never be listened to, so why bother. I once had an American send me a private message about how awful our medical system and how can I live in it and it's awful. I never even brought up the issue of medical care on the forums!
Every group has it's few people who make the rest of the group look bad.
Agapetos - what's the difference between the doctor's surgery and the health clinic? The surgery is just the physicians office right? Is the health centre where you have different kinds of doctors? And what is your emergency called? (A& Something??? Am I close?)

My psychiatrist works are the health centre once a week, as does the community dietitian and other community workers ~ health visitors and such. They do lots of stuff with children there too (though not sure what exactly, it's very child orrientated in the waiting room though and there are a couple of groups that meet there during the week (like the mental health support group).

I'm wondering how much sales tax is over there in Britain, up there in Canada and down under in Australia? Ours is different in each state, like in CA when I was there it was 8.25%, but here in OR we don't pay sales tax.
I met a French man, and he said sales tax in France is 19%! That seems like so much. So if you pay say $100 for groceries, then there would be another $19 tacked on there.
