No, not a Yankee, but a Yank. [;)]

yank.... yankee....down south it's the same thing...an insult.

L5FanLady -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (3/1/2008 8:12:01 PM)

I once heard that the English are called "Limeys".....[8D]

Perfectly true... so called because sailors would eat limes (or drink lime juice) to prevent scurvy.

And the Aussies calls us Poms, Pommies, or whingeing Pommy <insert word describing illegitimate persons>

We call them a bunch of convicts.

It's all good fun! [;)]

[whispered aside to Manda] Southerners (south of Pennsylvania, East of New Mexico is THE SOUTH and they are still fighting "The War of Northern Aggression" against those D*** Yankees up North (known as the American Civil War to the rest of us). Between you and me, I'm fine with various names (hey, we call you guys Limeys!), but you could start some serious stuff by calling a Southerner a Yankee. It's like calling an Irishman English. Just FYI. [:D]

Errr... isn't it liquid propane, not petroleum?

Well, it's not really the same...

When we use the term 'Yanks' we are referring to people who are American. England and Ireland are two different islands. To call an Irishman English would be akin to calling an American Canadian.

ta_mosquito -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (3/1/2008 8:48:01 PM)

Actually, originally Yankee did mean all Americans - think Yankee Doodle.

It's the Rebs that hijacked it. [;)]

Or a Canadian American. Not something that generally goes down well in my experience. [;)]

Rats... manda, we need to find another word...

I'm joking ~ I have never used the term as an insult, just an abreviation of American and it's always 'said' with affection...

manda59 -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (3/1/2008 8:55:50 PM)

agapetos

There is another word - which I innocently started to use having heard an American friend use it ................ and only found out later the other meaning for it, when I got seriously slated for using it. <giggle>

manda59 -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (3/1/2008 9:08:05 PM)

Btw, any non-Brits here might be amused to know that we call the French "frogs" and they call us "les rosbifs" (teasing references to each other's "cuisine")

agapetos -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (3/1/2008 9:11:03 PM)

I suspect the French have a few more words they call us, especially after we smashed their 2012 Olympics host hopes[;)].

ta_mosquito -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (3/1/2008 9:59:27 PM)

I've heard the French called Frogs, but I had no idea why.

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (3/1/2008 10:56:35 PM)

I can't post most of the things I heard the French call Americans when I lived over in Germany....I don't like towing the TOS line.

I don't.

Yea, doesn't bother me at all if you use it... I have genuine New England Yankee blood in me[8D]

Mrs.X -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (3/1/2008 11:56:28 PM)

This thread cracks me up. In some southern states, people use the word "Coke" for any kind of pop. When I went to MIL and FIL's in Georgia, his mom asked me if I wanted a coke, I said sure, and she handed me a 7up. LOL!

When people call me a Yank, I have to correct them and say I'm 3rd generation Mexiwegian. Same as when people try to blame "me" for opressing Native Americans and Blacks. I don't even have any ancestors who did that.

[sm=icon_smile_sing.gif]Johnnie, get your gun,
Get your gun, get your gun,
Johnnie show the Hun
Who's a son of a gun.
Hoist the flag and let her fly,
Yankee Doodle do or die.
Pack your little kit,
Show your grit, do your bit.
Yankee to the ranks,
From the towns and the tanks.
Make your mother proud of you,
And the old Red, White and Blue.
(chorus sung twice)

Chorus
Over there, over there,
Send the word, send the word over there -
That the Yanks are coming,
The Yanks are coming,
The drums rum-tumming
Ev'rywhere.
So prepare, say a pray'r,
Send the word, send the word to beware.
We'll be over, we're coming over,
And we won't come back till it's over
Over there.

Did you know that you can now attach your grill (specially outfitted) to your natural gas line from your house and run it off of that? One would never have to worry about running out of fuel!

When we built our house 5 years ago we had a natural gas line put in outside of our home so we could put in a natural gas grill at a later date. We are still waiting to put one in. They are still quite expensive at this point. Hopefully they'll come down in price in the near future.

Blessings,

Garsy
