I was feeling great. So one night I went to bed early and skipped dinner. Yeah, I was hungry the next morning, but no biggie. So another night, I just forgot about dinner after coming home to hit the books. Another day, I didn't have time for breakfast, or dinner that evening. Still, I *felt* fine. But I'm not ok with this. It's not healthy. Skipping meals is my problem too ~ which is why I'm trying to eat more regularly and when I do that, look at what I'm eating. I am doing more cooking (from scratch) than I've done in a long time though and when I cook, I try to cook more healthy food. There have been a number of times when I've seen my therapist and then walked into town from the hospital and had a bacon buttie because I've be aware of needing something to eat. Fried bacon, white bread, tomato ketchup, margarine isn't exactly balanced I guess, but it's better than skipping!

ORIGINAL: jimbolin Well, I've been sharing bits and pieces about my journey after heart surgery and so far, I've lost 148 pounds. When I started this diet, I decided to do it sensibly. It's been two years since my surgery and the weight has come off gradually. I've found that people who do these crash course, easy diets --- always, ALWAYS fail. A proper diet has to become part of a disciplined daily lifestyle. You know, I've lost all of my weight without spending a dime on diet gimmicks. I've managed to still eat all the foods I love to eat --- including an occasional Snickers bar! The key is moderation. Last fall, I ran the New York City marathon and now I'm training for a triathlon. Am I at my goal yet? No. I've still got about 30 pounds to lose. Christ calls us to run a good race --- it's been my observation that life is a marathon. I am living testimony that gimmicks don't work. But hard work, determination, a great support team, and constant prayer will accomplish the impossible! The sovereign Lord is our strength! todd's incredibly bizarre blog Wow Jim, your post is awesome! You have really inspired me! Not only do you show a person CAN DO IT - lose the weight with moderation and exercise but more importantly, you point to the Cross for our strength!

Hi Jim, thanks for joining us! One of the many things that I've learned about healthy eating for weight loss is that there is no "one size fits all" plan that works for everyone. We are all uniquely and wonderfully made by our Creator, with different preferences, lifestyles, health issues and lives ... so it's important for each of us (often through trial-and-error) to figure out what works best for us. Because I am diabetic, I need to eat on a schedule, and I need to carefully watch the type and amount of my carbs. And, since I need to plan and schedule meals because of it, I figured I'd might as well also plan in my proteins, fats and fiber, too...LOL! For me, I need to weigh, measure and log foods right now since I am in the process of training/learning about PROPER portions, serving sizes, and moderation. Other people have mastered these issues without taking the steps that I take .... so they can use other methods to monitor their food consumption. What is THE single most important thing when it comes to healthy eating for weight loss? PRAYER. The weather is beautiful, and I went bike riding around the neighborhood ... 4 miles yesterday and 2 miles today! My plan is to go out again tomorrow, Lord willing. And I can proudly report that my Apple-a-day plan for March is right on track .... I've had at least one apple every day so far this month! (And I am trying some new apples, too!) We can do this ... just take things one meal at a time, one day at a time, one pound at a time. Harvie

Harvie, Have you tried Yellow Delicious, Pink Ladies, and Fujis? Those are my favorites. Can we each commit to pray for each other? I know it would be a blessing to me if you all would lift me up. Yesterday, I ended up having 1642 calories... which isn't enough to gain weight, but isn't going to help me lose. Today, I am having: Breakfast Oatmeal, red grapes, cubed cheese (300 cal) Lunch Tortelilli salad (400 cal) Dinner Saucy Parmesan Chicken, peas & carrots, egg noodles, green grapes (450 cal) Snacks Pineapple (120 cal) Swiss Cheese (60 cal) Hummus & Veggies (100 cal) Projected Total: 1430 calories

man.. ever since i have first posted on this thread and wanted to make a commitment.. I have been eating SOOOO SOOOOO bad! I am eating HUGE amounts of pasta....and the more I try to tell myself to stay away from bad carbs.. the more I want it!!! I tried to eat some fruit (which I LOVE).. but I know fruit has sugars and I just have way too much of it! (I have no problems having 2 or 3 mangos a night for dinner!!) this is sooo hard... I don't want to gain too much weight with this pregnancy like I did the first time.. and I really want to get in better shape so in the summer when I will be very pregnant and want to go to the pools... I can at least find something to wear!! am really down at the moment about this and its taking too much of my thinking time.. but not the doing.. .its terrible! Someone had mentioned prayer for each other... if you remember please pray for me.. I need God's will power not my own :(

The more you tell yourself that you shouldn't be eating something, the more likely you are to want it. Since I started to look at what the GI/GL diet entails I've stopped thinking 'I shouldn't eat this', 'I shouldn't eat that'. And you know what? I don't really want it so much. I've got a big bar of chocolate beside my 'puter and it just sits there until I want a piece ~ I think Monday was the last time I had any (10g, which is less than 1/2oz). If you want pasta, eat pasta, perhaps try wholewheat or one of the many other varieties you can get (though generally from a health store) and make sure you put plenty of veggies in the pasta sauce (or even julliene veggies like courgette and carrot and mix them in with the pasta). If you want fruit, eat it. Have it as part of a meal though, not as a meal in itself (unless it's a snack). You're pregnant, take care of yourself and your baby. Watch what you eat, but don't get obsessive about it (and perhaps you're not obsessive, but it does sound a bit that way).

I agree with the advice to buy healthier, whole grain pasta. And fruit, in moderation, is an excellent part of a healthy diet. Just limit yourself to two pieces a day if you tend to overdo it, and eat more veggies in the meantime! (Cinnamon roasted squash is delightful!) * * * OK, it's 1:00pm and mail call was a total bust .... all ads, all went in the recycle bin. I am waiting for our federal income tax return check which is due here any day now. (According to the IRS website, it's being mailed "around March 4"). Oh well, maybe tomorrow. On a more positive note, I've ridden my bike 5 miles today, and can cheerfully report that my butt is sore! (Surely that must be a good sign, right?) My wonderful DH called the recumbant exercise bike place, and it's in, just not assembled yet. Maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow .... then we get to go and pick it up! We've rearranged the furniture in our family room so that the TV will now be smack-dab in the front of the recumbant bike. Hmmm.... what I REALLY need is for the tv to be powered by pedaling --- that would sure keep me exercising, huh? One more positive note .... my formerly skin-tight bike shorts? They are now pretty baggy.... how very cool is that? HARVIE (still grouchy because Mr. Scale is NOT cooperating, but it's sooooo nice outside.)

am actually not obsessive at all... the total opposite...and that is exactly my problem. If I was obsessive then i would watch what I eat and so forth... my hubby is on the "subway" diet... he is convinced that eating a footlong veggie sub for lunch and dinner will help him shed weight....lets see how long he will last with it and if it will work.... I need to do it the right way so i can be an example to him and something else about me.. i actually LOVE fruits and veggies... so its not tough for me to eat them.... like this morning I had a boiled egg and 2 tomatoes and a banana for breakfast... but how I ruined it is I drown the egg and the tomatoes in salt.....its like I know pasta is not the end of the world... btu I will go out to lunch and order it and I see the serving size is HUGE.. like almost 3 meals...but as I sit here at work I end up eating the whole thing!.. das what i mean.... anyways.. am really gonna try again.. and I want to go back to exercising.. I know when I hit the gym everyday its keeps me alert with my foods.... I have been saying Iw ill do it but have not done it yet! ekh!

EP- It's really hard to go out to eat and stay on a diet. You have to plan and choose carefully. It's not impossible, but just more tempting... like filling your home pantry up with junk food tempts you more than if you forego the junk food for the pantry and fill the fridge/fruit bowl with produce. Two ideas that may help you with your lunch: 1. Make your own lunch. There are low calorie/nutrient filled salads and soups that would be easy to prepare a head and grab for lunch in the mornings. If you need a break from your office and co-workers, take your lunch to a local park or to your car and take your break there. 2. When you eat in a restaurant commit to making wise choices. If you are going to get that fattening pasta dish, order a salad to eat with it and eat every bite of your salad and only one serving of the pasta. You can get a to-go box at the beginning of the meal and remove the excess servings from your plate immediately. If there are three servings of pasta, add a salad for two more lunches. It causes your initial lunch to be more expensive, but is well worth it in the long run. Also, better choices can include salads, fish, chicken, and green veggies. Many restaurants have nutritional info online and you can learn how to make better choices by getting a feel for the menu options before going to a certain restaurant. You can see if the salad really is a good option. Feel free to post your exact diet for the day if you think that will help you make better choices. It helps me to think you all look at what I eat and think, "hypoctite!" That helps keep me honest. Harvie-You are so funny!

am actually not obsessive at all... the total opposite...and that is exactly my problem. If I was obsessive then i would watch what I eat and so forth... Ok, the reason I mentioned the 'obsessive' word was this quote:
I am eating HUGE amounts of pasta....and the more I try to tell myself to stay away from bad carbs You are dealing with a several things at once and any one of those things is hard. You're pregnant, you're want to lose weight (or at least, not gain a lot), you're worried about the kinds of food you're eating, you want to go back to exercising.... Thinking of food as 'good' and 'bad' probably doesn't help anyone. Food is food. An excess of any one food is not good for us. Some people need to cut out certain foods because of allergies but for most people, eating a reasonable amount of something isn't going to kill them ~ and it's not going to make them gain weight either. Too many people need to change the way they think about food. I wonder if you're able to snack between breakfast and lunch? If you're not, that may be why you're eating so much at lunchtime. Unfortunately, restaurants have decided that serving sizes should be bigger. I wonder if you can ask for a smaller portion size ~ many restaurants here will do a child's portion. Many women who are pregnant are unable to eat as much at one sitting because baby is squashing the digestive system, so you could give that as a reason. If you can snack, raw veggies and fruit are great and pretty quick to prepare either the night before you go to work or first thing in the morning. Can you get oatcakes there? They are really good too. Or bread with seeds and grains in it. I'm a bit of a salt adict too. But think about trying to use pepper and/or fresh herbs instead of all the salt. I'm trying to learn that salt should enhance the flavour of the food and that the food shouldn't taste of salt. It's very hard. If you want to eat lots of fruit and veggies, do so, but if you're eating breakfast, lunch and evening meal, make sure that you don't eat just fruit as one of your meals (you mentioned you could do that with mangoes). Can I suggest you stop trying to do everything now and just choose one thing to work on. Doesn't really matter which, but don't worry about the others. When you have that sorted, introduce a new challange and go on from there. Very few people can turn their whole life upside down overnight and start doing things the way they should.

Hello, everyone! I've not been here for a few days because I've been busy posting and reading health information on sparkpeople.com. I'm learning a lot of new healthy habits to start and a few bad ones to break. I'm getting encouragement from my "teams" to stay on my eating plan, no matter how rough things get. My food plan is available on my sparkpage so my team members can advise me on wise food choices. You can also keep track of your food and fitness goals too. Well anyway, the zipper broke on my old HUGE winter coat, so I decided to try on the smaller size one that I've kept and IT FITS! I've washed it and will wear it tomorrow. It's days like this that helps to motivate me to stay on my eating plan. I have a recipe for a low carb dessert which is very rich and high in fat, but it only has 3 carb grams. It's called Bowl O'Cheesecake. You soften 2 oz of cream cheese in the microwave for 30 seconds. Mix it with 1 tbsp. sour cream and 2 packets (or 2 tsps) Splenda, plus any flavoring you want in it. You can eat it right away or chill it for several hours. It tastes better chilled IMHO. EDITED TO ADD that I've removed the link to my sparkpage because I realized that someone might post a comment on it that could cause me problems with TOS here.

That's great about your coat, Melissa! How exciting! I have done something similar to your cheesecake with ricotta cheese... you just sweeten and flavor it. It has an odd texture, but I liked the way it tasted.

I have two chicken cutlets in my freezer just begging to be grilled and placed on top of a salad!! But alas! I will have to eat all of my tortellini salad before I can even think of another lunch food (dh won't eat salad as a dinner entree.)

ok so alittle update on today... for breakfast I had the following... (I have no idea what the calories would be cause its not really typical food) a pita pocket filled with feta-like cheese (its very salty though.. and full fat.. its egyptian and we buy it loosley so I don't know the calorie count) 1 tomato 1 romain lettuce (you know those packages you buy with 3 romain lettuce heads.. ) for a snack this morning I had rice crackers.. those are 110 calories per 1/2 cup... I don't think I had a full cup.. but I know defenitly more than half a cup.. then i went to the gym during lunch.. i walked on the treadmill for 35 mins... my workout summary is 265 calories.. 1.67 distance (am guessing miles).. and time was 35 mins... obviously I was going very slow (the highest spead I went was 3.0) and then for lunch I went to the salad bar.. i got mixed green.. diced up beetroot...sliced olives... greek salad (which had feta cheese and olives as well)...pasta salad (like a tong-full) , a boiled egg.. and 3 slices of grilled chicken (smaller than a full breast)... and I just drowned the greens in red wine vinegar... mmm.. very tasty.... so once again am not really sure of the calories but I think the only bad for me stuff is the pasta salad and the cheese and the olives... I have no clue what I will be having for dinner... so this is a down side.... I'll probbaly have some rice crackers again for an arvo snack as I sit here at work bored.....and try drinking more water of course.... I am happy with the exercise.. i will try to do it as much as I can this week ( at least 4 days ) how is everyone doing?

Harvie the Sponge, I was wondering about the hummus you eat. Do you make it or buy it? Can you share either the recipe or the brand/flavor you prefer? I've tried a few and some I don't like... so I want to get your take on it. Thanks!
