Oh, I hated Christmas. I was one of those parents who wanted so desperately to give, give, give to my children, to make them happy, while the holiday put me in a frump from November through December. I wasn't smart enough to see that the children would have been happier with far less and a mother who wasn't nervous, worried, fretting, and unhappy.
So I would start buying things in November and hiding them here and there around the house. All the time, I would warn the children, "It's going to be bad this year -- I just don't have the money. I'm sorry." And every year, they would say, "But Mom, you said that last year, and we got so much stuff!" But I could not see the truth in what they were saying.
Then I remarried, and my new husband had a rule of no more than $50 for each child for gifts. I was stunned. I was used to spending $300 - $400, and I was widowed! This was what the children were used to! But I did it. I wasn't happy, but I did it. It didn't even seem to make any difference to them. But I hated Christmas all the more. Hated that time.
Now that I don't do Christmas anymore, and now that I am older, I can look back and see the errors of my ways. The stress, the fear, that was connected with what was supposed to be a joyous holiday, and I was not alone in that -- although I felt alone. Two months of misery with bells and flashing lights in my face to remind me 24/7. The only good thing about Christmas was when it was over. Wow, how negative.
So now, I don't do any of it. All I really put up with is the bad traffic, nutty drivers, and rude shoppers, but one can just figure out a way to avoid much of that -- in November, do all the grocery shopping in the morning, and if there is other shopping to be done, do it in the morning, too. People aren't as terrorized by their "Gotta Do" lists at that time. Then avoid shopping in December if you can. Just go to work and come home. Good night, things get bad here in December.

I decided when I married that I would never borrow money to buy Christmas gifts because I considered it bad stewardship. Some years were lean, others more bountiful. But we always had a great Christmas because we focused on Jesus and helping those in greater need than us.

I never borrowed either, Fletch, and I always made sure that we spent as much on a needy family as we did on ourselves. One might think that would alleviate my Christmas pain, but it didn't. It only added to my financial burden, but with some joy at giving and knowing my children were learning to give.
I am glad the giving lessons stuck, at least. My two children are the givingest people I know.

I've found so much joy (I was going to say more joy, but I didn't have
joy over X-mass either) doing the celebrations prescribed by God than
I did in the secular holidays. And it's (IMHO) one of those things you'd
have to experience to understand it.
I really hated it when it became so many "wanting and/or demanding"
to receive and the two years following to pay off the credit cards for
buying things no one appreciated anyway for that one season. Doesn't
take long to be in deep doodoo that way.
Sure, we can spout how we "enjoy" the festivities, but there are many
who are burdened by it. If we make the Word of no effect by our traditions,
then it's just a war of opinions.
Oops, sorry. It's not turkey time yet. LOL.

I'm looking forward to Tabernacles '08...will be celebration the Mosiach's birth during this time!! LOL!!
Seriously, Christmas can be a very stressful time of year. I hear that it's the highest time for depression!! I thank Yah for His feasts and appointed times. We're hoping to see more Prostestant churches this year. I'm excited!!

For three years in a row, celebrating Christmas meant performing in Dicken's A Christmas Carol with my daughter. The cast became a family for a couple of months (six weeks of performances, not including rehearsal time) and Scrouge threw the best Christmas party afterwards.
Some presents but never on borrowed money. I do get annoyed with the constant badgering of donations because of the season. I do get annoyed with the constant news of the economy. I do like the lights. I do like thinking about Jesus. I am wondering where I am going to put a tree in this small house.

Jimbo, I am sure you know that we celebrate Messiah's birth and His resurrection within the feasts -- right? -- His birth for eight days and his resurrection in three different feasts, one of which lasts 49 days.

It wasn't the original purpose of those feasts. They've been "Christianized" - a charge laid against those of us who choose to celebrate the events at a different time.
It doesn't bother me that you celebrate differently than me. The insinuation that not following the Jewish feasts & Torah makes us uninspired or second class Christians is what gets under my skin. It was that sort of attitude that made me post in another thread:
