My husband and I have decided, together, that our rule is to NOT allow ourselves to be in a situation where things could potentially go wrong. No matter what that might be. We don't limit it to not being friends with the opposite sex and we also do not specify it to be that either. Every situation is different, so they all need to be assessed differently.
Like, the other weekend I went out with a bunch of girlfriends to a "rock-n-bowl" to celebrate a birthday. I will admit that I had a few drinks and was feeling good. There were some guys next to us that were chatty and friendly with us and seemed to want us to continue to hang out with them. I just politely told my friends that I was not comfortable with that.
Also, my husband is in a touring band. They play all over and are gone for weeks at a time, sometimes. He makes it a point to NEVER walk away from the group to talk to a girl or sign something. Once he is done meeting the fans he will go to a quiet place and give me a call or walk around with one of the guys. He will not walk around alone so that he is a "target". The band mates also talk regularly about accountability. I think everyone needs that.
So, I guess in my case...I would not be against my husband having a female friend as long as I also knew her and we could all hang out together, and also as long as they did not spend alone time together, meeting somewhere for lunch and then parting their way would be ok with me. But I also know that if for any reason I decided it wasn't ok, I could tell my husband that and he would stop seeing her alone.
