Thanks ladies. Ryan will be working tomorrow doing all his prep work for the week. We had ran out of chicken and almost ran out of marinara. Thankfully our newest order is much, much smaller than our start up order. We are still brainstorming ways to keep labor costs down. As of right now since business really isn't in full swing until like from 6-9 then I don't schedule my servers until 6. Last week they were coming in like at 4 or 5 and there was a lot of standing around. I will be happy if we can at least match our sales this week. I also want to work on a kids menu, but the problem with that is that we are severely limited in storage space. So it will take some work. We were also thinking of doing something special for game nights. People in the community ask about pizza, but again that requires cold storage space that we don't have. So what we are thinking is offering our family meals during game nights. That would be a pasta that serves 4-5 with 6 garlic rolls and 4 sodas. I think that will sell well on those nights.

That would be a good deal, Nicole. Families always like things that are easy to eat on game nights, etc. Although pizza does go over SO well!! You don't even have to have silverware for it....just need the box & a space to eat. Although the ingredients would take a little bit of space.

Christi---how are you and GB doing with you being back at work? I saw that Nicole (CAN) had mentioned something in another thread, so I was just kind of curious.

The Angel Food Ministries sells meals that are pre-made for a family of 4....five of them for $20 so I'm thinking of buying some of those next month. I think it would be nice to have pre-made healthy meals (most have a veggie with them & some protein...not a lot of fat from what I saw). Then we would just heat & eat. DH could handle that. He really can cook...just trying to find some ways to make things easier for him.

So, what are you ladies going to be doing over the long holiday weekend?

I am taking the family to visit relatives on the other side of the state. It's a 4 hour drive so that should be interesting. I have new dvd's for the kids to watch so hopefully that will keep them occupied for a little while.

I enjoy weekends like this where DH and I can sit together at church and just be anonymous christians.

On the subject of dinner time: This is what I do. My friend Sideways suggested it to me earlier this year and I have done it ever since. It makes my life so much easier. And, the food is yummy.

Darn, there isn't one ANYWHERE near us. Ummmm, they offer franchising. Wonder if FIL would be interested in bankrolling DH and I

Most of those don't look very appetizing to me. I just like relatively plain food without a lot of exotic flavors or seasoning. Doesn't seem very economical either.

It probably isn't economical for ladies who are used to cooking from scratch and have plenty of time for grocery shopping and coupon clipping. But, it is a great thing for working outside of the home ladies. That is why I posted it here, in our support thread.

Closest one of those is 150 miles away. Hmmm, I'm starting to see a possible market need in my area. DH has always wanted to go into business himself. We may start doing some research.

A few ladies at work use a similar service. They all like it.

For me (weird me) cooking is my relaxation. So every night except Friday night, I cook.

The problem for me is that I sometimes want to cook for relaxation, but that doesn't mean it would be something suitable for the dinner table, KWIM?

A hankering to turn out cinnamon rolls or to something like that is more a hindrance sometimes.

That's when banking meals becomes invaluable. That, and when I have to work late.

*note to self: start banking meals again*

My kidlets probably would revolt if I tried a service like that, though. I've spoilt them on homemade from scratch dinners nightly.

I am a working mom but still have to cook from scratch and shop carefully. I am speaking from a working mom's opinion. Not all working moms can afford those things.

I haven't for a few reasons:
1. There isn't one near me
2. I don't see more than one meal in either of them that I would eat...not to mention my kids
3. They are way more than I can afford: $20+ for dinner every night? My entire food budget for the month is less than $400

The package I get is for 12 meals. I use about 3 of these meals a week.

It is more expensive than others can pay. But for us it is also a health thing. Before doing this, we were in a bad habit of going through a drive thru a couple of times a week. That is expensive and unhelathy. So on those nights that I don't have a lot of time, I use one of my Dinner Afare meals. We eat at home at the dinner table. My food budget has gone down to be honest, because we are eating out less.

It may not be for everyone, but I don't see the benefit in dissing something you've never tried. Maybe some of the other ladies here would like it.

Well, I'm going back to work in less than three weeks, and I'm already starting to worry about how I'm going to handle everything! I'm home all day right now and I can barely keep up!

Laura, that looks like a neat service, but I doubt there's anything like that around here. I will have to look.

I'm also trying to decide between in-her-home babysitter, and day care. It's tough decision. Cost has a lot to do with it too, of course.
My MIL kept my nephews, and effectively convinced her that she doesn't want to keep my kids. I do have a daycare lined up, but I just heard this week about a lady looking for another child in her home, so I need to call her and see what the scoop is at her house.

I'm not saying it's bad for everyone but just pointing out some of the downfalls. I could eat out for less than what that would cost me.

My husband is a big eater. It would cost us (family of 4) $25 to $30 to eat at McDonalds. I spend about $19 on these meals and DH and I both have left overs for lunch the next day.

Anyway, I know it's not for everyone, but I am so grateful for Sideways suggesting it to me. It has truly been helpful to my family. I thought I would pass it along.

The closest service to me is 3 hours away I would totally do it.
Maybe I'll scam their menu ideas and take a saturday and do up a bunch the same way. (maybe)

Laura, are you near the coast? Are you guys on hurricane watch?

We are about 200 miles from the coast. There have been times that we have been without power for weeks due to a hurricane (Ivan in 2004, Opal in the nineties) but nothing like people right on the coast. Luckily for us though, it looks like Gustav is headed farther west.

On the childcare issue: I tend to prefer a center versus in home because of reliability issues. When my SIL kept Ella as a baby we had problems with her not being able to keep her if she needed to go out of town, etc...

That is just my experience though. Others like to have the home environment too.

I'm not sure which one is cheaper.

Ok that's good, just wondering if we should be praying for anybody specifically on CW, and you came to my mind.

Not so good for New Orleans

I don't know that I have time to go back and read the last 40 pages, would you guys want to do some introductions?

I am Yolanda, 28, and mom to Chase who is almost 1. I am just finishing up my year of maternity leave, and heading back to my job at an insurance company regional office.
My hubby is a heavy equipment operator for the Dept of Transportation.
We plan to have at least one more child, but not sure when, sooner would be better than later.
We live in Canada, on the east coast.

Hmmm, what else?

Oh, we are about to build a new piece onto our house, which includes moving our existing house so we can dig a basement under it, add a garage and piece on the front. We should be right in the middle of that project when I go back to work.

I think that's all for now. I'm looking forward to getting to know the ladies in this thread!!

I'm with Jalanda in that my cooking is a way to relax and my family would probably revolt if I tried something like that! It does sound like a really good idea if you can afford it and you are really pressed for time. Since I get off work at 3, I don't really have a problem time-wise with cooking dinner.

Yolanda, I CANNOT BELIEVE Chase is almost a year old!!!!! Wow! And, dang, you guys are really doing a BIG job!! On the day-care thing, when my kids were younger I did both. I really liked the home atmosphere but LaurainAL is right with the reliability issue thing. I had a few times where the person was sick and wouldn't take the kids. With a center that won't happen. And my kids were in the same center for 8 years. They all became like family to us.

Yolalnda, I haven't been a parent, but I have worked in an in home day care and in an institutional daycare. I found the in-home day care FAR better..less kids per adult, more loving atmosphere etc. Plus, my in home day care boss followed all the laws to a T, my other day care was always trying to cut legal corners.

I think it all depends on the individual. I would make sure that the person keeping my children didn't just sit them in front of the tv all day.

That's true, and you seem to have found a good day care. In my case, the institutional day care was worse for overuse of videos. In the in home day care the kids had a home cooked lunch every day, pre school programs including reviews over letters, colors, numbers, geography, etc, writing practice, arts and crafts, story time, outside play, easel painting....the institutional day care was SUPPOSED to have all that stuff but our cukoo boss made us spend so much time doing janitorial work, that we hardly got to get around to the kids.
