We've had some rain but not enough to flood. Today is my day off. I need to start working on my sprints again though. I'm signed up for police agility testing in a week and a half and one of the tests is a 300 meter sprint (in the corrections testing we didn't do the sprint). I know I shouldn't have a problem with the sprint because I used to sprint in track many, many years ago, but it's very different than jogging so I do need to work on them.

300m is kind of far, if you ask me. I would have to work really hard to be able to do that, depending on time allowed. (How fast is your sprinting supposed to be?)

Well, fortunately, you don't have to be lightning fast (I can't remember exactly but I want to say you need to run it in around 55-70 seconds or so). It's basically just to see if you could handle a foot pursuit. When I ran it last fall, I actually got under 50 seconds. Adrenaline is a good thing.

Uh, yah. I was supposed to run this morning but somehow didn't see it on the schedule. Ops... I'll try to get the run in this evening.

I got new shoes this afternoon. I had ordered pink shoes from Brooks for 40% off. That was a week and a half ago and they have't even shipped yet! So I ended up going to the running store and buying the same thing in yellow. Bumming that they're not pink, but I'll deal.

I hate when people are slow about shipping! It's so disappointing to wait and wait and then find out they haven't even put your stuff in the mail yet!

Yellow isn't too bad. That would be a nice change from blue for me.

Yah, but this is what I ordered-- http://www.brooksrunning.com/prod.php?p=1200351B&k=123212 And this is what I ended up buying-- http://www.brooksrunning.com/prod.php?p=1200351B&k=123212 . Hmmm... that link might not work. You might have to do the color thing yourself. Basically, the yellow is ho hum but the pink is really pretty.

I see what you mean. Those pink ones would match some of my running clothes. I have the 7s, but I haven't tried the 8s. Do you like them?

I managed my four miles tonight, a full 10 minutes faster than my last four-mile run. (12:30 pace) I had to walk a few minutes in the middle, though, because I tried to take a drink and ended up choking myself. It wasn't good.

First run in my new shoes. Dah... same as the old blue ones. I'm certain the pink ones would run much better. Here's the funny thing--when I left to go to the running store this afternoon my order was still listed as "waiting". When I got back from the store, it was listed as "ready to ship". Meaning that I should actually get them! Dh told me to go ahead and keep the yellow ones, too. So I'll have both yellow and pink!

I am slightly disappointed in my run this evening. It certainly felt faster than the actual numbers. 3.75m in 33:26, 8:53pace.

You could wear one of each shoe, just to mix it up. Sometimes I think about doing that because I have two pairs of 2130s.

And I went to check off my run tonight and saw that I was supposed to do four miles of Fartlek and I did four miles of easy. So I guess I'll do the Fartlek on Wednesday. Whoopsie.

I also got a blister on my non-blistered right foot. I forgot to tell you guys I solved the problem with my left foot. I bought the cheapest men's insoles I could find (four for $2.47). I cut one in half and laid it across the bottom of my shoe, across where my arch lies. The soft rubber basically wraps around the middle of my foot and keeps it from pinching where the shoe meets the insole. Problem solved! I guess I'll take the other half and put it in my right shoe.

And here's something to help HC and everyone else racing this fall: RELAX

Great article! That's something I recall from my track days. The goal was to be so relaxed when you sprinted that your cheeks & lips would jiggle when you ran. Sounds funny, but it really does make a difference!

stellaluna--LOL!!! One of my friends from my running site has been known to accidentally wear two different shoes. As in two totally differnt brands! I have several pairs of blue Adrenaline 7's. I have them labeled A, B, C... Otherwise, I'd end up with a non-matching pair!

That's a good idea, if I get shoes that are identical.

I'm actually sore today from my run last night. Maybe I wasn't relaxed enough??? Hmm???????

I forgot to tell you some old lady nearly ran over me. She was in a red station wagon. We were both approaching the same intersection and she had a yield. She slowed down, so I kept running, then all of a sudden she hit the gas! She passed so closely in front of me that I could have touched her car with my hands. My initial reaction was to pound the car, but I was afraid I'd give her a heart attack. Instead, I yelled a few choice words in a very Christian-like manner. Not. I was so mad!

Anywho...I'm taking this evening off to go to an author lecture, so I'll do the Fartlek tomorrow that I was supposed to do yesterday.

Stella, that's why I don't ride my bike through my apartment parking lot, no one looks to see if anybody is behind anymore.. and its not just there, its in pretty much every parking lot. People just go in reverse, and most of them are on their cell phones too.

Its easy for me to get out of the way if I am walk/running but on a bike its just a near hit.

My run today wasn't that good, going to have to redo it later this week.

stellaluna--YIKES!!! Sadly, it happens all too frequently when I run in my neighborhood. Although, the other day I was at the grocery store with ds4. We were walking through the parking lot when this woman almost backed into us. I put out my hand to stop the car (like that was really gonna do anything...) but I had my keys in my hand. The woman was actually upset that I hit her car with my keys! Um, you almost backed into us???

I had a decent run this morning. I went to the track. I was supposed to shoot for 400's at 2:14. For the life of me I oculdn't hit 'em. They were all in the 2:08-2:10 range. So what's the big whoop? 400's at 2:14 would be my marathon pace. I was supposed to run the entire run at marathon pace to get the feel. Ah well...

I like this article.

Got some good training in tonight, and HPD did very well. The trail we run makes a big loop around a retirement community, and tonight we noticed half of it goes at a pretty good incline. That part's tough, but it makes the downhill side that much more sweet.

Seriously, what is wrong with people? My friend's 10-year-old girl was riding her bike and a car basically swiped her. The girl's hand hit the side mirror, knocking it off and BREAKING HER HAND. The driver got out and started yelling at her for breaking his mirror!!! I'm telling you, people are insane.

I have discovered the only way to really make myself slow down is to watch my heart rate instead of my time. It's a weird mind trick. You'll be able to do it--we're all behind you!!!

I don't have any hills for two more weeks. Woohoo!!!

And three miles. pffffft

I ran 2 miles this morning and it felt hard. I'm taking airborne everyday praying I don't get sick. Pretty much the entire office is sick right now... My testing is in a week and a half.... I CAN'T get sick right now...

And are you all serious? People get mad at YOU for them hitting you with their cars? Good gravy? Wait till I'm a cop and I'll take care of that attitude real quick...

Bad Run #132938

My first ever fartlek was really sucky. I did an easy mile, then started my faster running. I was following the suggestion in a Runner's World article for a good fartlek run, but they made it sound easy and it just...wasn't. I suspect I ran too hard in that second mile and tired myself out too quickly. Plus, the new blister on my right foot was hurting, it was hot, I ran through a swarm of mosquitoes and got five bites, I had to wait forever on traffic when crossing a busy street. Ugh. It just wasn't good. I cut my run short and only managed 3.3 miles.

Can you explain "fartlek" run? I'm not familiar with that.

And sorry it was a bad run. I had a bad, simple 2 mile run myself this morning... Nothing exciting - just felt pooped...

Fartlek means speed play in Swedish. The idea is that you run at different speeds for a certain period of time or mileage. Here's what I was trying to do (taken from Runner's World):

quote:

Running Landmark:
Pick a telephone pole, mailbox, stop sign, or anything up ahead and run to it. You can choose one item (all telephone poles, for example) or multiple landmarks to create varying lengths of speed segments. On each segment, gradually pick up the pace until you're running fast but not all out. For the last 20 steps, hold the pace, but focus on relaxing your body and allowing momentum to take over. Walk or jog for half the distance of your repeat, then spot your next landmark and take off again. Continue for a total of 10 to 15 minutes, before running an easy five to 10 minutes to cool down.

Except that my 10k training plan called for a four-mile fartlek, so I was trying to go that distance. Closer to three miles was probably more appropriate for me anyway.

stellaluna--did you do the best that you could for that day? I bet you did. Maybe you ran your first mile too hard. Or perhaps your fartleks were too long. Hang in there. Keep doing 'em and they will get easier. Not easier, jsut easier!

I did a track workotu today. I just didn't have much in the tank this morning, but gave it what I had. WU 1600 8:54, Main set 1200/800recovery. 5:58/4:29, 5:53/4:28, 6:03/4:36, 6:10/3:53. They were to be closer to 5:45/4:30. Ah well...
