Here's one to file under "Things That Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time"...

You guys may remember that I had a desire to run through our local historic cemetery. Well, today I finally did it. I went to Google maps and mapped out a nice 2-mile run for myself, then headed over. (After the 1/2 Power Bar and 8 oz. of sports drink. )

Well! The cemetery that is so shady and peaceful from the outside is quite a bit different from the inside. First, there are plenty of trees, but they are planted in such a way that hardly any shade covers any road. So I was running in 82 degrees with the sun literally beating down on me. Second, I did not know that so many of the roads inside are uneven and covered in loose gravel.

I managed a pretty decent time at a 10:41 pace, but I was not a happy camper by the end of the run. Also, my legs are really sore. I doubt I will be running there again. Well...maybe once temperatures really drop or on an overcast day I could enjoy a leisurely run/walk.

Live and learn.

It cooled off some here, and I hate to say it because I love the heat but fall has good running weather.

I like running on uneven paths like the trail, but it is harder on your legs.

Good pace though..i am not any faster than last year.. the cycling was supposed to help with getting faster so we'll just see.

stellaluna - I think I'd be steering clear of that run too. Ugh! I hate it when you think you have found the perfect trail only to discover halfway through it was a mistake. You don't want to stop your run and start somewhere else, but it's miserable to try and finish...

I didn't run today - I biked for 22.25 miles and my bum is sore! It was a good ride though and I made it up the final huge hill without walking my bike so that always makes me proud of myself.

I need to get out and bike. I have taken my bike out in a couple of weeks. The falling temperatures also have me wanting to hike. I prefer my hiking in the fall, winter and spring.

Yah, I've had those run where I thought the route would be perfect but once I got out there realized it wasn't!

Can't remember when I posted last. Friday I did my weekend long run. At 6am it was 72* with enough drizzle to make steam rise off the road. Half way through the run it did rain. A gullywasher that jsut made my shoes feel like they were made of lead! 16miles at a 9:30 pace.

Saturday, my younger kids did a kids duathlon. They had a blast! After taht we drove over to Grandma's for a family reunion. In the evening I was able to go for a run. Funny story about that run--

I had accidentally parked my cousin in. He figured no biggie, he'd wait until I got back from my run. Noone thought to look for my keys. When I got back, I popped in the house, grabbed my wallet and told people I was running to the grocery store. My cousing figured while I was at the grocery store he could get his car out. Except, noone realized I was litterally running ot the grocery store!

Sunday, my younger kids and I did a bicycle tour. We chose the metric half century. It should have been 31 miles, but it turned out to be 36 miles. My guys did great! Last year, I hammered the full century with my oldest son, the way I prefer to ride. However, this year, it was fun to relax and enjoy and not worry about time/pace.

Today, I did nothign. I had my stuff set out to go to the gym this morning. I didn't set my alarm, figuring if I woke up early enough I'd go. If not, that was okay because I probably needed the sleep.

Tomorrow, its back at it!

Looking good, Duane!!!

They never posted pictures from either of my races. What gives?

The two-mile race I'm running Saturday is actually 2.2 miles if you hug the inside edge of the course. The map they sent out was hand-drawn, so I went to Google maps to check it out. My first measurement was actually 2.6 miles! That's a pretty big discrepancy, if you ask me. So I re-measured several times and 2.2 was the shortest distance I could get.

That made me curious, so I measured the five-mile course and the shortest distance I came up with was 5.4 miles. The shortest distance I came up with on the half marathon was 13.4.

I mean, it's not a USTAF sanctioned or certified course or anything, but still. People running the five-mile course will actually be running nearly six!

Stellaluna--yah, that sort of thing happens all the time. There's a half marathon that I've run that is always about a half mile long. Either way, it is a fair race, as everyone runs the same distance.

This morning I did 2000yds (plus a bit, since I can't count!) in the fishbowl. Then a 4mile run. Fall is certainly here. It was 60* and rainy this morning. Perfect running weather!

My uncle swears every year that the biggest 5K we have around here is actually long too. He uses his garmin. I'm wondering though if all the weaving in and out of people for most of the race is the issue - not the actual distance of the course? They have signs as to where to start depending on your pace and walkers are SUPPOSED to start at the back, but people never seen to follow through on that. I was in the 8-9 minute mile group last year and spent the first 1/2 mile running all over the pace trying to get around walkers.

This morning, I ran a good paced mile. I had planned on doing 2 miles but fiddled around too much and ran out of time.

Kristen--that's exactly why I prefer smaller races! Within the first mile you are through traffic and can settle into your pace. However, if you are only doing a 5K... That's why I love long races!

Yeah, during my one 5K they specifically asked the walkers to move to the back and only one lady did. The rest stayed in front and all the fast people were having to work pretty hard to get around them. I, of course, am slow as molasses, so I was already in the back.

But I also heard that there can be slight discrepancies between Garmins and other GPS devices...so maybe no one really knows how long any race is. <Twilight Zone music here>

I have a GPS watch (not a garmin) and I do get slight variations on the same course. It's usually really close to the online mapping sites though. I think I'm going to need to get a new one though. It got banged up pretty good in my bike accident last spring and it hasn't worked very well since then. At least I have gotten a really good deal on it.

I have a Garmin 301. It works pretty well, although it's certainy not perfect. It only tracks so often, so frequently will "cut corners". It does not work well if there is any tree cover or on an overcast day.

I got a Garmin 305 for my birthday. It tracks much better! It's so good that sometimes it will even track me going down one side of the road outbound, the other inbound. Wow!!!

Generally, if it's a cheapy local race, distance might be off. If it's a certified course, the distance should be pretty much dead on.

i have the 305. I love it, I am a techie so I couldn't resist. It does everything for you except for the running (or biking)

Im glad I have it because the roads by me were curvy and hard to plot on google maps, so when I got the garmin I found my distance was way off.

Yeah, my routes are all flat and 99% straight. Makes it pretty easy to use Google.

Tomorrow I'm doing my first speedwork ever and I'm skeered! What if I pass out?

Stellaluna--you'll be fine!!! I did a speed workout at the track this morning. 8x400. I took 'em one at a time. I was able to complete all of 'em. I've had times where I couldn't do all of 'em. I just gave it what I had.

EIGHT 400s?

I was a sprinter when I was younger and we would have called that torture.... I loved the 200 personally.

I ran 3 miles this morning. I had planned on 2 miles, but by the time I had finished the 2, I figured I had more in me to keep going so that's what I did - kept going. It wasn't that I was having a great run - I just figured if I could do it, I would. The only bad thing is that I really didn't have the time to do that so I had to rush my buns off to get to work on time....

Well, I guess I won't be running today after all. You know that tendon that runs up the outside from your leg from your ankle? I guess I've pulled mine. It hurts about 2-6 inches above my right ankle--HURTS BAD. I wore shoes yesterday that I don't normally wear and my leg started hurting around mid-day and got steadily worse. Anyway, I don't want to jack it up...so I'll see how it feels by the end of the day and again tomorrow. If it stops hurting, I'll do my two-mile run tomorrow, the two-mile race on Saturday and speedwork on Sunday. If it doesn't stop hurting, I'll run the two-mile race on Saturday and see how it goes from there.

Frustrating.

(((Stellaluna))) Praying that it heals quickly!

I ran 2 miles today. It felt hard again, but then when I checked my pace, I saw I had a pretty good pace going so that made me feel a little better!

I like when that happens. If I feel like I'm working hard, I want a time that shows it!

My leg does feel better than it did this morning. Yay!

Yeah! Maybe you just tweaked it.

And I agree that I love to see there is a reason for a run being hard. It's kind of disheartening though when you are really struggling on a run and look at your watch only to see you are also running at a really slow pace...
