I had a really great run last night, albeit a little slower than I expected. Three miles at 35:00. The loose gravel I complained to you guys about is slowly getting ground into the tar by traffic. So in some places I am able to run with confidence, but in others I still have to look out for loose rocks and piles of rocks. In 35:00 I only walked about two minutes, which is a record for me. Still no Duane...

Okay, someone talk to me about blood sugar and bonking. Now that my runs are getting longer, I am seeing that nutrition and hydration are more important. Especially since I have low blood sugar. I bonked during my run on Friday, then turned around and did it again during my run yesterday. I read an article about it on Runner's World yesterday, which suggested having a PowerBar and some sports drink half an hour before running. I am going to try that, but I'm also thinking about taking a gel along with me during my runs, that way I can have it about half an hour in. Runner's World suggests that for runs longer than an hour, but I'm having problems after the half hour point. Thoughts? In other news...I'm signing up for a two-mile race on September 13.

I haven't heard of the milk thing. The juice is for immediately bringing up your blood sugar because its low and you might pass out. Plus milk doesn't digest easily so I couldn't imagine drinking milk and running even if you're not lactose intolerant. It's probably an individual thing, try the gels but check on runnersworld forums. There are lots of hypoglycemic and even diabetic runners that have figured out what works.

stella--how long are your runs? For my workouts, most of the week I do a swim then run. I'll drink a SlimFast or Ensure on the way to the gym. After my swim (usually about an hour), I'll have maybe half a bottle of Gatorade, mostly because I'm thirsty. Then, I run for up to an hour. I go home then have breakfast. For weekend long runs, for anything under an hour, I do nothing. Longer than an hour I'll take Gatorade. Over an hour and a half I'll do a Gu. If I am running later in the day, I make sure I've eaten a decent meal 1-2hrs before. Chocolate milk is the perfect post-run drink. It replaces carbs and protein. Personally, I don't do it.

My runs aren't that long...they're up to 3 1/2 miles, but I seem to run out of energy and I can literally feel my blood sugar crash as I approach mile three. My training plan has me running 5, then 7 miles within the next couple of months, so I'd like to get a handle on this little problem pretty soon. I checked out the gels and stuff at Academy today and I was in luck. They have the beans and the little squares of gel, so I got some of those. That way, I can try just a little bit at a time. I don't think I need a whole gel packet at this point, just a little boost. (And I think I need more sports drink before hand and not just water.)

Stella--when in the day are you running? Are you eating during the day? I do have a pretty heavy training load, but here's my "typical" day-- 6:00 Ensure/SlimFast, Gatorade during workout 9:00 breakfast (cereal, bagel, fruit) 12:00 lunch (usually leftovers from dinner, fruit, veges) 3:00 mid-afternoon snack (fruit or something slightly sweet like animal crackers) 5:30 dinner 9:00 sometimes before bed snack (usually ice cream--hey, I've usually earned it!) Since your runs are fairly short at this point, you really don't need the "sports" beans. Those include electrolites that you just don't need. Also, it takes about 15mins for your body to absorb it. So, if you are taking them late in your run, you aren't getting any benefit. That said, sometimes late in a race (half marathon or marathon) I have done a Gu. There most likely is no physical benefit, but it will give a mental boost. If you like sports beans and Clif bloks, try "store brand" stuff. Jelly beans--you know the things you get at Easter--work well. Also, froot treats are good. In the final miles of the bike section of my Half Ironman, I was supposed to do Gu. No way was that going down. My Little Pony froot treats were a God-send! I've also done Dots--the little boxed gumdrop thingys.

I got me another pair of shoes. Clearance so not too bad. The other ones wore out real fast for not running that much or far. So I'll get back into it this week with intervals.

Hi everyone! Sorry that I've been gone for so long, but things have been rather hectic here at work and I've been spending more time out of the office than in it. And as for doing anything on the Net at home - that's another story entiirely! We only have (Gasp!) dial-up Internet service! I know, I know. Wake up and join the 21st century, Duane! I'm trying to convince Mom to get it installed, but she doesn't want all of the rest of the digital TV stuff and Suddenlink won't do it any other way, so I'm kinda stuck right now. Oh well, back to the real subject at hand. Training for my latest race went pretty good, although I had more trouble with the intervals than I would've liked, but it was still OK. In fact, on the 23rd, I ran 4.5 miles, the farthest I've ever gone . . . and that was just a week before the race. This past Saturday, "Race Day," dawned sort of cloudy, and I thought we were going to get a break from the humidity. Wrong! It was even more humid than last year's 5K, but I still finished with another PR. I ran a 40:15:60, which is 9.3 seconds faster than the 4th of July race - but still not under that 40:00 barrier I'm wanting to break. It'll come someday in the future, but I was so hoping that it would've been Saturday! Gotta go now, but if they post any pictures of me, I'll give you folks the link. See ya! Duane

Duane--that sub-40:00 is almost there for you!!! Wait until it gets a bit cooler. Look into a fall race. You'll get it!

Okay, I'm posting a link to a site where they reported on the CDR 5K and 15 Mile races. Go to iPlayoutside, click on Charleston Distance Run 5K Photos, jump to Page 22 and look at the third picture in the second row from the top. That's the only shot of me. Thanks for the advice about the fall race. I'm looking at being a part of a relay team for the Marshall Half-Marathon on November 2. I was originally going to run in their 5K, but it's only a Walk - not a Run. Gofigyuh!! My mentor is going to be running in the half-marathon, and he's encouraging me to get a team together for the relay. The segments are 3.3, 4.1, and 5.7 miles. I'll probably take the short leg and find 2 stronger runners to take the other two. I'm not sure about doing another 5K before this race, but it could happen. Duane

What number is your picture? I'm experimenting with a new browser today and it's loading things weird, I think. A half-marathon relay sounds fun. I think you can do it. I have a two-mile race in ten days and our Race for the Cure is coming up on September 27. Anyone else doing that this month? This year they are doing the "competitive" timed 5K at 8:00 and the fun run/walk at 9:15. It used to be all one start.

They added some more photos, so now my picture is #321 of 411 on page 36. Sorry for the mixup, ladies.

Duane, I need the bib number, it is showing a total different number of pages than what was up before. I hear you on the allergies, I have claritin but its not working. Ran (well ran and walked today). I haven't run in months so I have some catch up to do.

I also take Zyrtec--have for 10 years now--and it usually works great, but allergies this year are kicking my butt. I've had to take a pill every night for the past four and I think it's building up in my system and making me really drowsy. I've been going to bed at 9:30 and sleeping until 7:30. Can't say I'm not getting enough rest, I guess. Okay, a report on the Power Bar/Sport Bean experiment: On Thursday, I had half a Power Bar and 8 oz. of sports drink half an hour before running. I ran two miles in 85 degree heat, 70% humidity, in 22:00. That's a record for me in that kind of heat and humidity. I got a side stitch at a mile and a half, but was able to run through it. Felt great afterward. Tonight, I had half a Power Bar and 8 oz. of sports drink half an hour before running. I ran three miles in 85 degree heat, 50% humidity, in 37:00. I had a few sport beans and some water at 1.75 miles. Really slow pace, but no crash. Also, even though I had to walk about 4-5 minutes of that total time (due mostly to heat), I'm really proud of myself because I ran the route that has the long hill and I almost made it up the hill. Usually I poop out shortly after beginning. I bought one of those belts that have the two water flasks attached and I ran with that today. The best part of having water with me was being able to squirt it on my head. There was no wind tonight, so it was seriously hot!!! Still looking forward to crisp fall temperatures... I just have two-mile runs the next few days, but I'll keep you guys posted when I get a longer one.
